Flight 1 - POUR COMMENCER (1 note)

White - Sparkling
2000 Alfred Gratien Champagne Brut Millésimé France, Champagne
92 points
Tasted non-blind. Fermented in cuve and aged for six months in barrique, non-malo. Chardonnay-led, this is still fresh and energetic, elegant, floral and citrussy, with a nice touch of red apple and a hint of nutty evolution. Well-balanced, a lovely wine.

2014 Domaine Berthet-Rayne Cairanne Blanc France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Cairanne
91 points
Tasted blind. A refined and floral wine, very silky and harmonious, young but already subtle and layered, pear and melon, playful and elegant, light on its feet, belies the underlying concentration, fennel and peppermint on the finish.

2013 Domaine du Tix Vaucluse Cuvée Don Felipe Blanc France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Vaucluse
92 points
Tasted blind. 100% Viognier. Very oaky on nose and palate, but the oak has been handled masterfully, not a single rough edge, subtle bourbon vanilla adds interest but does not overpower, there is ample youthful richness and fleshy fruit to buffer the oak, butter, acidity seems slightly low, the varietal is not easy to distinguish at present, but probably Viognier. Needs time.

Tasted blind. 100% Marsanne, from two parcels planted with centenarian vines. Oaky, juicy, vibrant, hint of butter, Marsanne clearly in evidence, youthful, soft and ripe, pleasant but not profound, minerals, floral note suggests Roussanne? Nicely done, balanced and silky, no excess heat, drying finish, nice bitters, decent length.
