Introduction

Six of us got together for a civilized lunch. Chef Ruta prepared a nice tasting menu that complemented the wines really well. As usual, the service was exceptional The lunch lasted over four hours.

Flight 1 - Selosse (1 note)

This was one of the best Selosses.

White - Sparkling
N.V. Jacques Selosse Champagne Grand Cru Lieux-dits Extra Brut Ambonnay Le Bout du Clos France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
96 points
Perfectly mature nose displaying sweet yellow fruits and a hint of delicate red, apple cider, orange peel, biscotti, macadamia and sweet spices. Nicely balanced palate, sweet and nutty palate impression, medium mousse and nice long finish that starts sweet and ends dry. It nicely displays the house style, ie a bit nutty and oxidative yet precise and fresh. As a reference, I generally prefer Initial to Substance and this combines the complexity of Substance and the freshness of Initial. Really delicious.

Flight 2 - Raveneau (2 notes)

I was hoping for a nice mini vertical. Unfortunately the MdT didn't want to play.

White
2005 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
92 points
Sourced from Europe. My initial impression is slightly corked. Amy thinks the wine doesn’t want to be opened. Shy nose displaying yellow fruit, apple, lemon curd, smoke, honey and mineral. Quite concentrated, dense and deeply toned fruit, slightly lacking acidity and medium finish. I would like to try another bottle soon. Hoping to provide a nice comparison to the Valmur but not so this time.

White
2005 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Valmur France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
97 points
Very pure, cool and mineral driven nose displaying fresh lemon, fresh apple juice, honey, saline, white pepper and limestone. Beautifully balanced and harmonious palate combining purity and precision. Very complete wine that will please everyone. Sort of wine that I can drink all day!

Flight 3 - Riesling (3 notes)

White
1985 F.X. Pichler Riesling Smaragd Ried Kellerberg Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
90 points
Not sure if this is the correct bottling as no '85s were showing under Pichler. Barry mentions possibly made by the father. Medium expressive yellow pit fruit driven nose, apricot jam, yellow peach, honey, sweet and sour sauce, mineral and strong note of steel/cooper. Very rich yet precise palate, mouth puckering acidity and medium long finish. For my palate, enjoyable and nicely mature but not the most complex Riesling. Others like it more.
White
2007 Schloss Gobelsburg Riesling Alte Reben Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal
94 points
The richness, strong presence of mineral, spiciness and mouth puckering acidity reminds me Grosses Gewachs. Dense yellow fruits, lemon and peach, tar, white pepper and crushed stone. Excellent concentration, dense sweet yellow fruit driven palate impression, strong presence of mineral and acidity and very long finish that starts sweet but ends very dry. It is really enjoyable in youthful way. Really good energy.
White
1990 J.B. Becker Wallufer Walkenberg Riesling Spätlese trocken Germany, Rheingau
90 points
Peach, honey, smoke, burnt sugar and bitters. Medium concentration, bright acidity, honey and yellow peach driven palate impression, bright finish and medium finish that ends bitter. Good mature basic Riesling.

Flight 4 - RSV and RIchebourg (3 notes)

Red
2001 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
95 points
Youthful expressive nose displaying sour and crunch red fruits, strawberry and rhubarb tart, mushroom, caramel, roasted nuts, coffee and mineral. Good concentration, crunch red fruit and a hint of coffee driven palate impression, bright acidity, a hint of tannins and lovely long finish. Not as concentrated as the Arnoux RSV but slightly more precise. Still not showing much of Sous Bois. If you prefer the fully mature expression in red burgundy, another 10 plus years of cellaring will be required.
Red
2001 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
96 points
Expressive nose displaying rich red and black fruits, cherry, raspberry, vosne spice, caramel and mineral. Excellent concentration, dense and beautifully layered, sweet red fruits and lovely long finish. Just like the Noellat, drinking beautifully in a youthful way but will improve further. More decadent and concentrated than the Noellat version.
Red
1998 Domaine Jean Grivot Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
94 points
Very masculine expression, very ripe, slightly dry red fruits, dry cherry, raspberry jam, dark spices, cedar and iron. Excellent concentration, dense and deeply toned, jammy red fruit driven palate impression, bright acidity and long sweet finish with mineral and earth at the end. Just like the last bottle, need another ten years of cellaring to gain sous bois and to become less masculine.

Flight 5 - Piedmont (4 notes)

Red
1964 Fontanafredda Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
flawed
It really tastes like Madeira. Oxidized and VA. It will be fun to mix with Pedro Ximénez and serve blind in a Madeira flight.
Red
1971 Giovannini Moresco Barbaresco Pajoré Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
97 points
Expressive nose displaying decadent dry red fruits, dry cherry, leather, milky chocolate and mineral. Exceptional concentration, deeply toned decadent red fruit driven palate impression, bright acidity, fully integrated tannins and lovely long finish. The concentration achieved here is quite remarkable. Totally unexpected.

Red
1967 Luigi Calissano Barbaresco Riserva Speciale Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
89 points
The color, molasses/intense yellow brown, tells me that the wine is madeirized. Initially madeira and soy notes. With air, sweet very dry fruits, a hint of oxidative note, dry fig, caramel, soy and balsamico. Fully integrated, perhaps a bit advanced palate, mouth puckering acidity and medium finish with a hint of madeira as the end note. If you like the style of old school piedmont wine, ie a bit of oxidation, really dry fruit and soy, you will appreciate this a bit more than me. Not a big wine and I suspect a bit fragile at this stage unless kept in really cold cellar.

Red
1967 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
93 points
Still reasonably expressive nose displaying dark cherry fruit, tar, leather and earth. Good concentration, surprisingly generous dry cherry fruit driven palate impression, bright acidity and medium long finish. The piedmont equivalent of a fully mature solid village red Burgundy from a great producer. Not showing a lot of finesse and complexity. Nevertheless, it is a very good mature Barbaresco with good concentration.

Flight 6 - Sticky (2 notes)

We moved to the rooftop and enjoyed the stickies. It was an absolutely gorgeous day.

White - Sweet/Dessert
1988 Château Climens France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac
95 points
Beautiful nose displaying ripe yellow fruits, apricot, orange candy, ginger, honey and crème brulee. This particular bottle shows a lot of botrytis. Very precise and airy palate, steel, not showing much acidity and lovely long clean finish. Really enjoyable.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1975 Jos. Christoffel Jr. (Christoffel-Prüm) Erdener Treppchen Riesling Beerenauslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
96 points
Delightful nose displaying apricot marmalade, dry apricot and peach, burnt sugar, honey, sweet spices and botrytis. Exceptionally concentrated yet airy, round and polished, the perfect amount of acidity and lovely long sweet finish that ringers. No need to think, simply delicious.
