Introduction

A casual get together where we popped a few bottles amongst wine geek friends. Great to have this monthly gathering back in motion.

Flight 1 (10 notes)

Red
2009 Kutch Pinot Noir Anderson Valley USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley
88 points
Full nose is candied black cherry, cola and spice. Palate has medium fleshy body. On the heavier/sweeter side but enough acidity to provide balance. Riper than I would have expected for Anderson Valley and definitely a bit four square. Solid none the less.
Red
2009 Rhys Pinot Noir Bearwallow Vineyard USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley
91 points
Sexy nose has black cherry with nice stem-driven florals and herbs. Palate was initially hard-edged and not all that pleasurable (upon pop n' pour). With an hour or two of air the palate picks up some flesh showing more balance and seamlessness. Very good and probably needs a few more years to develop.
Red
2004 Domaine Anne Gros Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
88 points
Aromas of light cherry with some green herbs pick up fruit intensity and notions of spice with air. Nice depth on the palate and good balance with medium weight. Just barely showing Vosne spice. Good for the vintage without any overt problematic green meanies.
Red
1985 Penfolds Bin 389 Australia, South Australia
93 points
Knock out nose is ethereal and layered with mature black fruit, spice, dill and cigar ash. Palate is medium bodied and while less dramatic/complex quite nice and elegant with mature still-fresh fruit. Lingering finish.
Red
2010 Guillaume Gilles Cornas France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
92 points
Showing quite young. Full nose of primary black fruit, meat, smoke and pepper. Palate is polished with round peppery fruit. Medium-to-full bodied. This is a suave and still primary Cornas. No rusticity or animale notes ... perhaps those come with more time. Terrific potential.
Red
2014 Pierre Gonon St. Joseph France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
This is essentially a barrel sample today. Decanted for ~60 minutes before I tasted. Nose is huge and full of uber-primary black fruit with hints of meatiness, pepper and herb behind the fruit. Palate is forward with loads of pepper and black fruit. A flashy youngster with no nuance. I have high hopes for the future here.
Red
1997 Hospices de Beaune Corton-Cuvée Docteur Peste Prosper Maufoux France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
92 points
Lovely full nose of earthy cherry fruit with some mushroom and beef broth. Palate is expansive with nice complexity in the earth, mushroom and spice notes. Excellent fruit intensity with substantial weight and seemingly still-brawny tannin on the back end. A fine Corton.
Red
2007 Rudius Syrah Emerald Pool Alder Springs Vineyard USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County
92 points
A really attractive and full nose has creamy black fruit, stems, florals, bacon and olive. Very Northern Rhone in flavor profile. The fruit is moderately rich and provides a lush medium-to-full body. This is in a great drinking window with fruit pleasure and complex flavors.
White
2013 Francois Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
93 points
A delicious young white burg. Nose is full and showy with forward, ripe orchard fruits and white flowers. Palate has ripe/rich fruit and medium acid that comes together in a poised, balanced fashion.
White
2012 Edmond Vatan Sancerre Clos la Néore France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre
Young and monolithic at this stage. Even with 60-90 minutes of decanting, this was showing non-delineated and heady. Big, round and lush in the mouth make for a powerful presence. Needs time to flesh out and develop some nuance.
