Introduction

This was my first time attending one of Kevin's big time Bdx events, and it did not disappoint. We had some amazing bottles and none of them were flawed, which of course is not how things always turn out. It was a great evening of wine, food and conversation. Great people...great wine. It does not get any better. Thanks Kevin for the invite! Well worth the price of admission.

Flight 1 (10 notes)

White - Sparkling
1996 Bruno Paillard Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
92 points
Nose: Light on yeast but big on minerality w/ faint lemon undertones. Palate: Still good acid levels w/ mid to back palate lemon qualities and minerals present. Nice.
White
1996 Verget Chablis Grand Cru Bougros France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
91 points
Nose: Big lemons show and some faint mineral character. Palate: Dry lemons w/ some faint oxidation yet good weightiness. A bit tired but still showing well. Good time to open this.
White
2012 Domaine Henri Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Mouchère France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
93 points
Nose: Big oak initially from youth. This blew off somewhat after extended glass air time showing an oily minerality that was very unique. Palate: Surprisingly accessible in it's youth w/ soft pear and hints of lemon. While somewhat elegant this has a great deal of upside with age. My favorite of the whites.
Red
1985 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
94 points
Nose: This one really came out of the gate swinging for the fences with Stargazer lily and white pepper aromas. Later on hints of tobacco, cedar, and cornbread were present. Very captivating nose. Palate: Soft styled and showing great. Blackberry with the Stargazer lily qualities present. Very balanced and approachable right now. This one is in a perfect place IMO and my second place wine of the evening. 94+ points.

Red
1991 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve USA, California, Napa Valley
92 points
Nose: Initially big mint qualities that resemble an Aussie offering. After around 15 minutes of glass air time this blew off to reveal inky qualities and a subtle vegetal quality that was not detractive, but interesting. Palate: Spicy black fruits with a fairly long finish. Little bit of alc heat prevents this from scoring higher. Nonetheless a solid effort. 92+ points.
Red
1966 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
91 points
Nose: Very secondary w/ phenol, smoke, beef blood, mushroom and hints of red fruits underneath. Palate: The phenol and red fruit hints show in a medium length finish. Pretty cool to have a wine almost my age that can still be drunk, but my preference is to have wines that exhibit more fruit and youth so this only goes to 91 points for me. Of course 91 is still a solid score in particular for a 50 year old wine.
Red
1982 Château Margaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
95 points
Nose: Inky w/ black licorice and an almost saline quality. After glass air time white pepper, truffles and minerals show. Very compelling aromas. Palate: Super dark black fruits w/ perfectly integrated soft tannins, pipe tobacco, leather and spice. Incredibly well refined and elegant...the picture of balance. This was a very special wine drinking great right now but with lots of gas left in the tank for the long haul. Mine and the group's overwhelming WOTN.
Red
1995 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon The Montelena Estate USA, California, Napa Valley
93 points
Nose: Big and modern styled w/ fresh mint and flowers. Fresh crushed cherries show after extended glass air time w/ a trace of garrique. Palate: Dark fruits w/ charcoal and sweet spices. The wine evolved several times throughout the night. Well made.
Red
1995 Château Lafite Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
94 points
Nose: Complex aromas of assorted herbs w/ pencil lead and minerals present. Palate: Soft, evolved tannins with the dark fruits, earth and funk. Had only one other Lafite which was otherworldly. This was very good but did not rise to that level for me. Very complex and well made but this actually barely lost out to a far less expensive wine in the 1985 Ducru, which bested this by a half point. This was my #3 WOTN.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1990 Château Suduiraut France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
90 points
Nose: Not any botrytis aromas present but there was some subtle nut and fig aroma. Palate: Much less sweet than I would have envisioned. Very evolved with some fig showing and a trace of bitterness that was minimal but still there. Cool to try a 26 year old sticky but for me this was light and lacking fruit and depth.
