Introduction

Final round for Heritage blind wine tasting challenge. 3 finalists from each of 5 cities. I finished in 4th place amongst the 15 contestants, so very pleased with only embarrassing myself a little. A great event, I was honored to be able to participate. Kudos to Heritage.

Flight 1 (8 notes)

White
2014 Henri Boillot Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Tasted double blind. Floral and ripe orchard fruit with baked apple hints. Very long and powerful. Immediately recognized as white Burgundy, and incredibly similar to the Boillot '14 CC served at the prior blind tasting a few weeks back. Upon reflection I thought it slightly riper, so changed my answer from 2014 to 2012.
Red
2013 Peter Michael Pinot Noir Ma Danseuse USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
91 points
Tasted double blind. Red cherry and berry with baking spice. Plenty of new oak still pronounced. Good balance with an elegant finish and very good cellaring potential. Easily identified as Pinot Noir, but I thought it from Burgundy (Vosne from a more modern-styled producer) given the balance and lack of heat on finish.

Red
2003 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair La Romanée France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Romanée Grand Cru
95 points
Tasted double blind. Easily my favorite wine of the tasting. Also easily identifiable as from Burgundy from a ripe vintage. Black and red berries throughout. Intensely floral with great spice and concentration. So elegant and texturally charming that I was shocked when this was unveiled as from 2003.
Red
2000 Domaine Leroy Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
92 points
Tasted double blind. Nicely mature black cherry with earth and background spice hints. Moderate concentration and length. Didn't show Leroy's telltale perfume. I was going back-and-forth between this coming from Burgundy or Northern Rhone, and erred in the wrong direction because I thought the previous two wines were red Burgundy. Thought it 2001 Chave Hermitage. This wine perplexed many of tonight's tasters.
Red
1997 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto di Serralunga d'Alba Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Tasted double blind. Black cherry, some red cherry, savory spice. Very elegant textures while also dense, most notably on finish. I guess I should have been able to identify this wine since I just drank it 3 nights earlier at a Giacosa/Gaja dinner. But I had made the decision that I would identify everything as from either US or France to avoid overthinking the wines and confusing myself. So I thought it Bordeaux, 1998 Palmer.
Red
2000 Château Cheval Blanc France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Tasted double blind. Black fruit, lots of power and savory spice. Very concentrated and powerful, so i liked the potential here a lot. But it is very firm right now, in need of another decade+ in the cellar. I correctly identified this as Bordeaux, but didn't get 2000's ripeness so thought 2001 left bank.

Red
2005 Harlan Estate USA, California, Napa Valley
Tasted double blind. Very large black fruit aromas and flavors with a hint of liqueur. Very long and powerful, while also well integrated and balanced. I was easily able to identify this as a very well made Napa Cabernet, but was out of my element after that. I liked this a lot.
Red
1998 Torbreck RunRig Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Tasted double blind. Ripe black fruit that I found borderline over-ripe and over-extracted for my preferences. After lots of confusion, the spice profile led me to realizing it was a New World Syrah blend, but I didn't even think about Australia. Very well made in its style, but not a style I typically enjoy.
