Tasted December 7, 2016 by Papies with 347 views

Introduction

What is now becoming an annual to bi-annual event in Athens with good friends a some beautiful wines. A theme is chosen, every one brings 1-2 wines and all are served blind.

Theme for this Event were Rhone Grapes from around the world. Interestingly we all went fro New World barring a few exceptions in the whites.

Venue was chosen Paleo in Piraeus and excellent yet simple restaurant run by a great wine lover and sommelier Yannis Kaimenakis.

Flight 1 - The Whites (4 notes)

White
2006 Skouras Viognier Eclectique Greece, Peloponnisos
93 points
Tasted Blind.
Guessed mid 2000 marsanne/roussanne blend. We were astonished to see the label.
Light touch of oak from what was probably an oaky youth, firm and mineral, good acidity, none of the expected Viognier exotic side and hence, light citrus notes hence we thought marsanne. Well evolved and on the day was singing. 92-93

White
2012 Domaine Yves Cuilleron Condrieu Vertige France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu
91 points
Tasted Blind. Guessed Condrieu 5yrs or so.
Textbook Condrieu. Banana, Mango, exotic feel, light on the acidity. Round feel but no new oak feel here. Good wine but lacked a bit of a firm core. Lovey ripe fruit and decent length. 91

White
2006 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
93 points
Tasted Blind. Guessed Chapoutier Ermitage blanc from late 90s.
Goof colour here, glossy still. Citrus, apricot, light honey on the nose, light oak. Mineral, big bodied, full wine. Firm core of acidity, that hermitage "bitterness" too. One needs to love the style for sure but top quality wine. 93-94

White
2008 Giaconda Aeolia Australia, Victoria, North East, Ovens Valley
94 points
Tasted Blind. Guessed Beaucaste Roussanne VV 5yrs old.
Bright, glossy, full of energy wine. Devout of over ripeness or over oakyness, very much old world and very elegant. Firm core of cidity, still very frsh and full of that citrus and mineral feel.Very good wine 94. Impressive

Flight 2 - The Reds (6 notes)

Red
2007 Cayuse Syrah Bionic Frog USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
94 points
Tasted Blind. Guessed new world very cold climate Syrah.
A great surprise having tried other cayuse wines that were a bit on the sweet and lactic side (to the point that we sold all our allocation). This was a lot more of an old world in style wine, restrained and devout of heavy handed wine making but still with that characteristic new world richness and ripeness, maybe a light touch of jammy fruit on the finish. Just about entered its drinking window and full of promise for the future . 94 for now

2002 Alban Vineyards Syrah Lorraine USA, California, Central Coast, Edna Valley
92 points
Tasted Blind but picked it as the wine we submitted. Easy one to.
Big and massive 16+ alc, rich dark fruits, spice, light black olive feel. A wine that is amplified across from fruit, to alc to body to length. Not for the light hearted but it sort of works in its own way even for old world lovers like us. Probably a bit better to have Alban's on their own or a bit younger we are starting to believe. This 2002 was little bit muted compared to younger and more expressive (like 2006 Reva and 2005 Lorraine Papies 97 for both). 92-93 and we would suggest one drinks sooner than later or flip the coin and forget it for 10yrs

2001 Kongsgaard Syrah Hudson Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
flawed
Muted to begin but developed on the nose over time. But the palate remained, oxidized, a bit of acetone feel and just wrong. Shame.

2006 Tua Rita Syrah Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
90 points
Tasted Blind. We had zero clue what this wine is. And having tried this wine 3 times now it always has this feeling.
Dark, dense, solid and aeration did very little to develop it. Massive wine, dark fruited. Rich fruit and oak. Unfortunately unlike the 2004 we tried a few years ago this didn't work, it was a little bit on the muted and dull side and had nothing of the exciting side the 2004 (Papies 94) had. A good 90 for us this one.

1997 Alvaro Palacios Priorat L'Ermita Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
94 points
Tasted Blind. We could not place it other than a feel that this was a modernist wine from a relatively warm climate. We erred on the US Syrah side.
Dark in color, dense. Still very young in a way and has quite a bit of evolution in the tank. The oak is well assimilated. Dark fruited, touch of earthy feel at times but lightest of touches to be honest. Round and supple tannin, good acidity and with an underlying rich core of fruit on the palate. Could have guessed cab sauv to be honest if it wasn't that we at least new these were only Rhone Grapes.. Pretty Solid 93-94

Interestingly checking a note we had on this wine in 2012 (Papies 93) we actually thought this was a super Tuscan.

2009 Noon Shiraz Reserve Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Langhorne Creek
88 points
Tasted Blind. Could no place it aside from guessing that this was the product of really heavy handed wine making from new world.
Massive wine, 16% on the label but this is easily close to 17% , licorice, anise notes on the nose, really intense and spicy on the nose. Rich dark fruit, big yet round tannin. Unfortunately it didn't work for us , was far too big and lacked a sense of charm or elegance. 88-89?

Flight 3 - The Sweet (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2015 Domaine Yves Cuilleron Condrieu Ayguets France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu
94 points
Good bright glossy light honey color. On the nose Apricot, light botrytis, orange peel maybe, light marmalade feel. Quite Exotic on the nose and we wonder if this sees new oak too. This is a very serious sweet wine, lots of elegance here and class. Very solid wine and with lots of life ahead of it but like a great Sauternes it has a beauty when one tried them young. 94+
