Flight 1 (10 notes)

Rosé
2016 Seiber Cellars Mourvèdre Rosé USA, California, Central Valley, Yolo County
Chris' first crack at making a rose. So cool. burnt orange color. Peach and a medicinal note. Lots of earthy tones on the backend. Medium plus body.
White
2013 Grace Winery Gris de Koshu Japan, Chūbu, Yamanashi
Blind - guessed chardonnay and from burgundy. Others were on the sauvignon blanc trail.

One thing you know when Chris S. is providing the wines you'll be off the reservation at some point with an interesting wine. Here's a perfect example. A very nice wine, indeed.

Very light yellow in color which looks like an SB, actually. The nose is very expressive on opening and hints of flint and gun powder. Definitely old world in style. This really got me thinking white burg which I couldn't get off of. Tart red apple flavor and lemon/lime flavors with high acidity. The wine is light bodied, almost thin, but very refreshing.
White
2009 Rhys Chardonnay Alpine Vineyard USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains
Blind - guessed California chardonnay with 10+ years on it. FMIII called out Rhys and the vintage. Stud.

Looks aged based on the color, adding a brass hue. Viscous/oily quality to the mouthfeel. Fruit is primarily pineapple and the finish is dominated by turpin. Sweet yellow apple fruit. I'd say this won't be improving with age.

White
2009 Domaine Chevalier Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Blind - guessed white burg

This had that cheesy / reductive nose thing going on which screamed white burg to me. Light fruit presence, medium plus acid. I tasted vanilla and cinnamon too.

Red
1999 Pio Cesare Barbaresco Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Blind - guessed Cab Franc - ouch

Like colored, like a pinot or light zinfandel. Has a gamey quality and green notes on the attack, that's how I got to a Loire CF. Good minerals and light cherry note. Still plenty of structure and little sign of aging. Shocked we all missed this one so badly. That's why we taste them blind...
Red
1998 Silvio Grasso Barolo Ciabot Manzoni Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Blind - guess Cabernet Sauvignon

Medium plus depth of color, pushing plum. Hint of brett suggested Italy. Dark red fruit. Very fine and prevalent tannins throughout the mouth. Some charred oak.
Red
1995 Château Clinet France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Blind - guessed BDX Cabernet Franc (hey, I got the right bank part right)

Plum, green stems, dried leaves, and tobacco notes. Very long finish but drying. Nice bottle of wine.

Red
2014 Black Hills Estate Nota Bene Canada, British Columbia, Okanagan Valley, Okanagan Valley VQA
Blind - guess BDX blend. No idea on AVA so I wrote Sicily for giggles.

Delicious ripe red berries create a very tasty wine. This just shows that in the right hands great wine can be made all over the world. How they get the fruit ripe in Canada is beyond me, pick in November? But it works beautifully.
Red
2005 Charles Joguet Chinon Franc de Pied Les Varennes du Grand Clos France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon
Blind - guessed Cabernet Sauvignon

Big structure here, this will last. Angular tannins are plentiful, very chewy. I got more red currant and didn't get pencil or cedar notes that I would associate with CF, but what the heck to I know.

Cool treat here.

Red
2013 Switchback Ridge Petite Sirah Peterson Family Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
Blind - guessed Switchback PS (just had this wine 2 months ago)

Typical PS glass stainer. Ripe blue fruit and red berries. Gritty aggressive tannins, tar, and chalk. Great wine but way too young for the general population. We are not afraid!
