Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Billecart-Salmon Champagne Brut Rosé France, Champagne
90 points
Very lovely bright nose, with a touch of florals and tart red fruits. The palate has a great minerality, and a fair bit of acidity. Lots of freshness here, this is a simple and light, but very delicious all the same.

Is this really albarino? A stunning nose that shows quite some grassiness and yellow fruit and promises a waxy texture. The palate is very consistent with that nose, but also features a really potent vein of acidity and saline minerality that contrasts very well with the yellow fruit and that promised waxiness. Screams for a seafood tower.

2007 Clos Rougeard (Foucault) Saumur-Champigny Les Poyeux France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur-Champigny
Day-old leftovers from a bottle from the same source as my note from last year. The nose is incredibly smoky, and shows some very prominent cigarette character. The palate is a bit thin, with again lots of green (like those strings from a sugar snap pea) and cigarette smoke which I actually found way too over the top.

2012 Maison Leroy Bourgogne Blanc France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc

Much better than the disastrous 2010 version. The nose has a bit of sweet pineapple. The palate is fresh, with some sweet fruit and a fair touch of straw. Good acidity and a touch of minerality; this is fleshier than I prefer for white Burgundy, but drinks fairly well at this level.
Red
2001 Thierry Allemand Cornas Chaillot France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
93 points
Classic svelte Allemand nose: sweet black fruits and so much lovely spice. The palate though leaves a bit more to be desired; it's a bit thin and acidic, likely the product of the vintage. There's beautiful red fruit here, but I wish the palate was a bit fuller and showed more opulence to match that incredible nose.

2000 F.X. Pichler Riesling Smaragd Ried Kellerberg Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

Ok, wow, nphase worried I'd hate this but I think everyone was pleased that I was wrong. This is incredibly good. Sappy and thick, with heaps of botrytis and sweet yellow fruit. Very powerful, but incredibly good cut at the same time. This makes me think a little bit of G-Max...

2013 Remoissenet Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Poissenot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Super oaky nose. Pretty much over-the-top for me, either this will integrate or not. The palate shows some very nice lighter red fruits, but the heavier oak sort of blows that up a bit. Good, but we'll see if this ends up integrating with time.

1998 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
95 points
#07-99, 7.5% abv. "It smells like a cake," said Psmith. Wut. Incredibly thick and dense, with an absolutely awesome amount of honey on the nose and palate. So thick, this has an almost eiswein-level thickness, although it's sweeter and it isn't as racy and acidic. The honey and botrytis on this are stunning; there's a bit of orange peel freshness here too that adds lots of interest. Stunning.

1996 Marcarini Barolo La Serra Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
90 points
The nose on this has a light bit of mint, but also plenty of red fruit and heaps of earth. This also has that earthy signature that I've always picked up from Marcarini. The palate still has a fair bit of fruit, but it is quite dominated with earth. A very nice bit of acidity here, with the tannins that still need some time to resolve. Good, but tastes a little touch old.
Red
2006 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Corton-Bressandes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
88 points
This shows a little bit of that characteristic 2006 earthiness and geosmin (beet taint), but the nose and palate is surprisingly light, perhaps as the stereotypical hallmark of the house. The palate is also light, but shows a bit of earthiness and sweet red fruit. A bit thinner than I'd expect for a wine from this vineyard and vintage.
White - Off-dry
2005 Dönnhoff Schloßböckelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Spätlese Germany, Nahe
93 points
#07-06, 8.5% abv. There's a slight bit botrytis here, but this is mostly a classic, riper Dönnhoff, with lots of sweet white fruit. Honeyed and rich, and an Auslese-level sweetness, but a much lighter palate texture. A nice touch of red earth here, this tastes a little less polished than what I would expect from the NH or OB.

2012 Weiser-Künstler Trabener Gaispfad Riesling Kabinett trocken Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

I've loved the 2012 WK Praedikat wines, and WK is one of my favourite new wave German producers, but this really didn't work for me at all. Thin and mean, with no fruit to balance out the heightened acidity. Teeth-stripping. I think that the 15s we tasted at the estate have gotten much better; my understanding is that this bottling has gotten a bit more and more skin contact, filling it out.

1999 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Echezeaux Vieille Vigne France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
90 points
This was really lean and thin initially, and not showing very much at all. With air, this got a lot more earth on the nose, and the palate definitely filled out. The palate shows a little bit thinner, but also filled out with more air. Red-fruited and light, with some classic Fourrier character; I just wish this reflected the riper vintage instead.

2009 Arnaud Ente Meursault Clos des Ambres France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
93 points
Classic white Burgundy reduction. Sulphur, matchstick, and crazily crisp minerality. This doesn't show much right now; it's really, really tight, and almost shut down. This certainly needs much more time to resolve. The fruit here is very faint -- this is a mineral- and acidity-driven Meursault very much to my taste. This will need time to resolve.

2010 La Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Bousse d'Or France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
90 points
This is a very dense and powerful Volnay, showing a moderate amount of oak that's very well balanced by the super potent fruit from the vintage. There's a lovely red fruited quality to this, and while this isn't the most delicate or wall-flower of a 2010 Burgundy, this is pretty impressive all the same. Obviously young, this needs some time for everything to integrate.
Red
2012 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
93 points
A very nice nose with a bit of green olive; this is ridiculously young and not showing much of the Jamet character that I found in the wines from a flight a few weeks ago. Nonetheless, the nose on this is profoundly aromatic with a light touch of spice. The palate has yet to fill out, but there's some really lovely sweet red fruit here that balances a bit of spice and some really nice stemmy notes. Good, but just too crunchy right now.
Rosé
2012 Tatsis Negoska Rosé Greece, Macedonia
88 points
This is clearly skin-contact weirdness. The nose here has what Psmith calls bee pollen (and I'm inclined to agree), as well as a really nice pink peach note. The palate is incredibly acidic and shows lots of the skin-contact character as well. This is fairly crisp and fresh, but mostly an odd duck to me, though I have to say that I enjoyed this a fair bit.

2002 Pierre Péters Champagne Grand Cru Cuvée Speciale Blanc de Blancs Les Chetillons France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
95 points
You know, I've never really understood young Chetillons, but this was an absolute revelation. Bready and full-bodied on the nose, with a lot of incredible acidity. The fruit here is bruised and ripe, but lends so much heft to this. Mushroomily umami on the palate too, and insanely concentrated.

2009 Philippe Pacalet Gevrey-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
90 points
This is a really pretty red Burgundy, especially for the denser vintage. Lithe and elegant with a little bit of black truffle on the nose. The red fruit on the palate is really nice and fresh, with a light touch of earthiness. I'm told this is a bit of a "natural" wine, but it doesn't strike me as too hipster with the profile here.
White
2008 Marquis de Laguiche (Joseph Drouhin) Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
93 points
This shows that ripe and thick texture that I get from the 2008 white Burgundy. There's a really brilliant reductive note and some really alluring white pineapple nose. The palate shows a really nice acidity as well as a slight touch of botrytis and waxy fruit. Great acidic cut, with a really nice lemon peel touch.
