Wines with Friends

Pine Lake Trout Club

Tasted July 10, 2017 - July 17, 2017 by Loren Sonkin with 345 views

Introduction

Last week I was invited to join my friend Ron and a bunch of others at a Local Club for Dinner and wines. We all brought the wines. I arrived a bit late as I had to work. It was a fun night of sitting outside and enjoying the night, conversations and cigars along with the wine and food. Good times.

Flight 1 (8 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut France, Champagne
89 points
Served way too cold. The crowd was outside and I was late arriving. The wine was in a large filled water/ice ice bucket and was quite cold. While refreshing on a hot and steamy evening, it wasn't the best for the wine. Given the circumstances, however, that was probably the best as the wine would have warmed quickly. When I took the wine out of the bucket "steam" came off the bottle from all over as it hit the outside humidity and temps. That said, golden in color with lots of small bubble. The nose is a bit nutty with some yeasty/baked bread notes. Slight hints of lemons and cherries. Good minerality. On the palate, this is refreshing with nice enough acidity. Worked well with food. Nice finish. Not the best value in the world, but if someone else is paying, a nice drink.

I have been lucky enough to have this vintage half a dozen times. I certainly hope I get to try it in 5 and 10 more years as it is still a bit young for my tastes. Great pieces parts at the moment but needs time. I got the last sip from the bottle, so this was well aerated, and still it needs time. Purple in color, ruby rim. The nose is cherries, spice, sandalwood and dusty tea. On the palate, it is a big wine with full cherry and dark cherry flavors. Also a lot of oak. Good acidity.
Long finish. 2 or 3 points of upside potential.

Very nice showing for this bottle but even at age 13, it is still not yet at peak. Ruby/purple in color. The nose is very nice with cherries, dark cherries, tea leaves and hints of balsamic. On the palate, medium tannins. Lots of juicy black cherries. Deep but tight. Long finish. Went well with food.

Pop and pour. Purple in color. The nose has plums, cherries, spice, and fresh cut lumber. A bit of tobacco as well. On the palate, this has big fruit, big tannins and big oak. It needs some time to come together but has plenty of potential to do so. Right now, oak and fruit but if that isn't a problem it is drinking well now.

This was very good. The crowd seemed to ignore it which was a shame. Ruby/purple in color. The nose is really nice with dark cherries, slight coffee and cigar box. On the palate, this has a nice complexity to it but still seems young. Cherries and cigars again with a hint of dark chocolate. Nice finish. Good acidity. Worked very well with food.

This really has turned a corner in the last year or so. OK, this is still a bit shy of maturity but finally starting to be at a place where it is not a sin to open. Decanted for sediment and served. Purple in color, ruby at the rim. The nose is great. Cassis, leather, slight funk and some tobacco. On the palate, this is showing tight layering. Lots of cassis and earthiness. Juicy. Lovely texture. Long finish. Improved all night after opening. Not at peak but drinking great right now.

White - Fortified
N.V. Domaine de Saint-Lannes Floc de Gascogne Vin de Liqueur à l'Armagnac France, Southwest France, Gascony, Floc de Gascogne

This was a new one for me. Apparently a white wine fortified with Armagnac. I liked it. Golden in color. The nose is pretty with apricots and cloves. On the palate, this is viscous. Dry with a sensation that it might be sweet. I did not get any heat or alcohol. A very pleasant finish.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Château Coutet Barsac France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

In a really nice place right now. From a 750 and consumed over two nights. No real change. Amber/gold in color. The nose has apricots and citrus. On the palate, the same. Sweet but not a whole lot. Viscous. Long finish. Very tasty.
