Grand Cafe, Mpls

Introduction

Eight of us got together for the first small group dinner at the relatively new version of the Grand Cafe, where two local power chefs are driving the French themed cafe. A good showing from the wines on a fun night to celebrate David's bday.

Flight 1 (2 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Bérêche et Fils Champagne Brut Réserve France, Champagne
91 points
Small pour over 20 minutes. Firing on all cylinders again, this is very nice with pleasant chalk minerality, green apple, quince, brioche; vibrant. 91+ to 92 pts.

White - Sparkling
2002 Pol Roger Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
94 points
Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. This was a great bottle, with a wonderfully toasted nose with yeast, brioche, lime, lemon curd, white fruits, taut and elegant with great energy and length. Love these and darn glad there's more coming.

Flight 2 (1 note)

White
2010 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
90 points
Light medium gold color. Drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. This was maybe just a bit warmer than ideal. It seemed to lack some of the energy and verve, especially from the '10 vintage. Still very good with oyster shell nose, citrus and saline, it comes off a little soft. 90+pts.

Flight 3 (3 notes)

White
2013 Lamy-Caillat Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
92 points
Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over an hour. Citrus, tangerine, lychee, crisp acid, good length, really opens over 15 minutes. Lovely.
White
2004 Rene Lequin-Colin Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
93 points
Medium plus gold color. Drank 1 glass over an 45 minutes. This was in good shape, showing maturing flavors and a rich texture, honey, baked apple, lemon oil, butter brickle, long and well balanced. Love it when they hold together like this.
White
2012 Louis Jadot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
92 points
Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over an hour. Very good, citrus, toasted oak, mineral, powerful and aromatic nose. Lean and focused on the palate with citrus, stony minerality, toast and good depth.

Flight 5 (2 notes)

Red
2000 Faiveley Mazis-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
93 points
Medium dark red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over an hour. This was much better than a bottle 18 months ago. This bottle really had a deeply earthy and iron stained nose and palate, with black cherry, currants, and fine grained tannins, that progresses to show more forest floor and shitake mushroom. 92+ to 93pts.
Red
2007 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Ruchottes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru
95 points
Medium dark red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over an hour. Very pretty and aromatic on the nose, with perfumed red fruits, very high toned spices, strawberry, wow, an ethereal perfume of roses and dried flowers. The palate follow suit with a medium plus body that is blissfully long and fresh. Just a beauty. 94+ to 95pts.

Flight 6 (2 notes)

Red
2013 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
91 points
Very dark red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. Herbal, pepper and spiced, new wood, green, very young. Needs 5+ years.

Deep amber color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Juicy and sweet all around, apricot, dried apricot, candied orange, unctuous and oily, honey baked apples and touch of apple spice. Good acid to balance. Long and slurpy. 93+pts.
