White - Sparkling
1964 Delamotte Champagne "Collection" France, Champagne

From magnum. No question about it, if this were served blind to me, I would have at best put this in the late 80s. This is ridiculously fresh, with a brilliant nose of brioche, citrus, and just a bit of roasted nuts (the only real indication of its age). The amount of bead on this is insane -- this is fresher and crisper than so many younger Champagnes I've had -- this just puts them to shame. The palate isn't the densest and most potent, but it has a lovely gentle refinement and dignity about it. This is at an amazing spot right now, and well-stored bottles are in no danger of decline.

White - Off-dry
1964 Bischofliches Konvikt Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling feine Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
95 points
This is probably the best bottle of this I've had to date (two left!). It's riesling as old riesling ought to be. The cork came out with a huge stench of TCA, but fortunately the bottle was fully sound. "Ethereal," was bandied about. The nose on this seems to show a good amount of ripeness, with lovely stone fruit, southeast Asian herbs, and a light touch of gasoline. The palate is soft, and despite all the ripe elements, doesn't show much sweetness. Very nice acidity and minerality, this does taper off a touch on the back end, but really that's the only nitpick here.

I wasn't enthralled with the showing of the Rhys wines at a tasting earlier this year, so I was certainly curious to try this. The nose shows a very interesting dustiness, something that I've never really picked up on pinot. There's still some fruit, but most of it seems to have receded behind structural elements. There's a bit of greenness here, which isn't so much green taint, but more like pyrazines from cabernet franc. It's not too detracting from the wine, given that there is some nice fruit to balance it out. This does seem to have aged fairly well, and it's enjoyable, but at the end of the day, I'm probably not going here for my pinot fix.
