Introduction

In general the formula here is that the host sets a theme and every participant brings a wine of the theme. The host puts a few extra on the table. We taste all wines blind, knowing our own wines. We first taste a little bit in a random order. Then we decide together in which order the wines will be tasted again and after that revealed. In this group we do not use spittoons, so the number of bottles is limited. We don’t empty the bottles, but leave the leftovers for the host to taste again the next day, or take home the bottle we brought. In fact this easy setting where we taste the wines several times over 4 – 6 hours is the ultimate way to get a good impression of a wine.

Flight 1 (7 notes)

Red
1995 Château Léoville Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
90 points
Deep bouquet. Liquorice, black currants, little strawberry. Oak. Young firm tannin and good bitter en sweetness in the finish. Wait a few years.
Red
1999 Château Feytit Clinet France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
88 points
Good oak and butter in the bouquet. Spicy and a lot of vanilla sweetness. Good fruit and tannin. Firm wine. Really nice wine. Drink again after 2 – 3 years.
Red
1996 Château Lafleur-Gazin France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
88 points
Blood red/carmine with a slightly brown edge. Barnyard and butter in the bouquet. Spicy, juicy, good acidity, oak. Soft tannin in the finish. A powerful and elegant wine. Mature and in the first half of its mature life.
Red
1999 Château La Croix de Gay France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
89 points
Ruby. Barnyard and a lot of oak in the bouquet. Juicy black currants and liquorice. Full bodied and very juicy wine, however the oak is overruling everything at the moment. Wait 3 years, because this is definitely a good wine.
Red
1998 Château La Violette France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
87 points
Fairly light carmine. Good bouquet with oak, raspberry and strawberry. Fairly light bodied, but well structured wine with good juice, bitter, sweet and acidity. Very tasty and now ready. Can last for a few more years, but do not wait too long.
Red
1996 Château La Fleur-Pétrus France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
93 points
Carmine. Beautiful deep and ripe bouquet. The taste is also ripe and going through the whole mouth. Blackberries, currants, good oak. Long juicy aftertaste with a good amount of tannin. A very complete wine which combines elegance and power in a beautiful way. The wine is completely ready now. Probably enough power to last for some more years, but no reason to wait. Now at its best.
Red
1998 Château La Cabanne France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
86 points
Dark blood red. At first very backward bouquet. Two hours later much more appealing. Firm wine with a lot of oak, bitterness, sweetness and tannin. This is definitely a good wine, but it needs some more time. Evolved during the evening from very mediocre to very nice and complete.
