Mövenpick 20/20 Tasting

Zollikon

Introduction

As always a nice event, although I would have hoped for a more impressive line-up of rarities given that this was a widely promoted jubilee event.

Flight 1 (10 notes)

White
2015 Clos Dubreuil Chardonnay France, Vin de France
89 points
Tasted at the Mövenpick 20/20 tasting near Zurich.

Nice medium intensity nose full of sea salty minerality, herbal spiceyness and a present toasty oak. The fruit is predominantly citric although you'd probably also find some tropical fruit notes in the distance. On the palaste quite heavy on acidity, but still within the boundaries of pleasant.

Came across a bit closed initially with medium- intensity. But the aroma profile was convincing and complex boasting white flowers, quince, nactarine and mirabelle and a bit of orange skin. On the palate surprisingly citric and hence fresh with a more than medium length finish.

2010 Gialdi Merlot Trentasei 36 Switzerland, Ticino

Quite dark red colour with a high intensity nose boiling with ripe, port-like red fruit and lots of medicinal menthol. On the palate rather high acidity and a less than ideal balance.

2015 Château de Fieuzal Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
92 points

A medium+ intensity with a fruit dominated by citirc flavours complemented by wooden oakiness (aged wood) and grassy herbs. The highlight was the palate which came across creamy and fresh with medium lenght finish.

2007 Artezin Petite Sirah Mendocino County USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County

Tasted at the Mövenpick 20/20 tasting near Zurich.

Dark, almost black colour with dark fruit in a state of porty ripeness. Intense herbs and a bit of mint. Tannins were still pretty rough and greenish. Long finish. Initially would have thought 93 points. But after a short while in another glass from the same bottle the wine disintegrated and turned into bouillon / beef tea as would happen with over-aging. At $25 the price tag is more than fair, however.

2013 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Valbuena 5° Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

A medium+ intensity nose with a range of red and dark berries (cranberry, blackberry) and a fine cigar box / cedar overlay. Both tannins and acidity are still grabbing too much attention on the palate, but otherwise seems well integrated with great aging potential. Probably best to revisit in 3-5 years.

The flavour profile consists mostly of fruit and herbs with no convincing complexity at first sight. Also limited balance on the palate with high levels of both tannins and acidity. Maybe a <90 socre is harsh, but comparing this to the 2015 Pomerol cousin L'Evangile which I tasted recently this left me unimpressed, unfortunately.

Cassis liqueur shines through despite a rather small share of carmenère in the blend. Firm structure, good balance and good level of intensity overall. I‘m convinced this will be a lot of fun when one allows for a bit more time in the bottle.

Fully confirmed my positive impression I had the first time I tasted this. Beautifully floral nose with a broad range of fruits ranging from light starwberry to deep cassis. While no doubt this will get better with increasing bottle age, it was already perfectly good to drink and well integrated. Tannins are very present on the palate but feel soft. Fresh and long finish.

Red, light marmalady fruit, popcorn and toasted bread. Both falvour intensity and complexity are medium+. The mouthfeel is pleasantly creamy, although there are still excess tannins on the palate which may take a while to integrate.
