Taste 222 - Chicago IL

Tasted December 7, 2018 by Burgundy Al with 260 views

Introduction

Celebrating a friend's 42nd birthday with a few other friends and a few bottles of wine over dinner, then cigars.

Flight 1 (22 notes)

White - Sparkling
1982 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut Vintage France, Champagne
90 points
From magnum. Still bright and fresh. Nicely floral with fresh and baked apple, coming across as very Chardonnay-driven. Good+ weight and very good textures for Champagne at this age.
White
2015 Château Monbousquet Blanc d'Exception France, Bordeaux
87 points
Very grassy with lemon peel, Meter lemon and tropical notes, ending with a saline finish with moderate weight and length.
White
2010 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Meursault 1er Cru Gouttes d'Or France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
From magnum. Very reductive start with flinty character. Lots of apple throughout with floral hints. Very good weight and potential, but not particularly accessible today.
White
2005 Bouchard Père et Fils Chevalier-Montrachet La Cabotte France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
93 points
Small glass, brief note. Both very ripe and rich, but balanced with plenty of acidity and concentration. Plenty of apple with slightly sweet spice and some background exotic fruit. Very good length, very good now.
White
2011 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
94 points
Enticing aromatic start showcasing floral, spice and orchard fruit elements. Similar flavors with lemon curd as well. Very good length with minerally finish I particularly liked.
Red
1989 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
93 points
From magnum, "hand imported" directly from the Château. Bright black fruit still very fresh while powerful. Well supported with roasted meat and savory spice. Good density and length. Very impressive wine.

2011 Domaine Bruno Clair Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
89 points
Black and red fruit with spice aromas I enjoyed. Less exciting flavors are similar but lighter styled, and seemingly underripe in the middle, but with a bigger finish. Good overall, but disappointing for Grand Cru. I don't own this wine, but would cellar for at least 5 more years and hope for better harmony.

Red
1976 Château Latour Grand Vin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
90 points
Small glass, brief note. Ripe black fruit, cigarbox, savory spice with leather note. Charming start, softer middle, good weight on finish.
Red
1976 Château Cheval Blanc France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
93 points
Dense black fruit with both savory and sweet spice, with good power and follow-through. Perhaps slightly dirty, but not in a distracting way.
Red
2013 Il Poggione (Proprietá Franceschi) Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Small glass, brief note. At first I wondered if slightly corked, given how much earth such a young wine displayed. But Mike convinced me otherwise. I know this is a top producer in a good vintage, but the wine never impressed me, just seeming soft and nearly elegant with medium weight and hardly complex red fruit.

1985 Faiveley Latricières-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru
90 points
Small glass, brief note. Very old school. Fully mature red fruit with lots and lots of earth, mushroom, braised meat and background spice. Good weight, good+ balance and very good length. Very enjoyable, I'd just want/ expect a little more fruit and/ or density from such a good vintage Grand Cru.
Red
2011 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
93 points
Plenty of red cherry with savory spice. Very elegant with near perfect balance, good+ weight and length. A top 2011.
Red
2013 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Corton-Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Rich aromatic start, but didn't quite deliver the same on palate. Didn't come across as enjoyable or balanced vs last time tasted a few months ago. Clearly needs time.
Red
2011 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Very closed down, nothing to coax out of this small pour tonight.
Red
2002 Domaine Robert Groffier Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
93 points
Lots of both black and red cherry aromas with savory spice. More red cherry flavors, maturing nicely, with very good density and textures. In its peak drinking window.

2003 Louis Jadot Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Ripe black fruit throughout with very good+ density, some roasted meat. Slightly backward on finish, while still very ripe. Needs more time, but I'm still confident of its great potential.. I should have decanted.

2005 Geantet-Pansiot Charmes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Open 3+ hours before I tasted the wine. Dense and meaty black fruit comes across as rich and fleshy to start, more backward and firm towards finish. Certainly good now, very good 92+ point potential, 2025 forward. I am glad to own a case+

2013 Gilbert et Christine Felettig Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
89 points
Cross-section red fruit with enticing floral and spice aromas. Similar flavors, just slightly less exciting or robust, even while very enjoyable now. Good weight and length. Best to enjoy now through 2030.
Red
2004 Gaja Langhe Nebbiolo Sperss Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
Small glass, brief note. Sensational aromatic start with so many alluring features, including bright red cherry, anise, black pepper, fresh herbs and floral notes. Similar flavors, but the wine is so backward and burly and the fruit character too young, slightly flamboyant right now, and begging for more cellar time. Great potential ahead, 93-94+ points.
Red
1988 Gaja Barolo Sperss Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Small glass, brief note. Also a completely alluring nose with dried rose, complex spicebox and slowly maturing cross-section of red fruit. Wonderful flavors, still showing firm tannins that I think presently slightly mask the wine's full potential. Wonderful now, but more air and/or cellar time will continue to be rewarded.
White - Fortified
1922 D'Oliveiras Madeira Boal Reserva Portugal, Madeira
92 points
Dried cherry, almonds and figs with a long, bright and energetic finish and great textural charm. So enjoyable, with a moderated sweetness that wouldn't pair well with dessert.
Red - Fortified
1963 Fonseca Porto Vintage Portugal, Douro, Porto
92 points
Popped, decanted and poured. Dried red cherry with cherry pie notes. Good weight, but even better length and vibrant textures.
