PhD Week in Virginia

Virginia

Tasted March 16, 2019 - March 22, 2019 by rocknroller with 222 views

Introduction

We were out in the Williamsburg area to see our older son defend his thesis at William & Mary. Amongst many great dinners and a few special bottles we had a great time bopping around the area. Managed a couple winery stops as well. Very impressed by our visit to Barboursville. They grow 27 varietals on 190 acres of vines and they did them well. Congrats to Dr. Scott on a job well done! We couldn't be more proud of you.

Flight 1 - Pre-Defense Dinner at Fat Canary, Williamsburg (1 note)

Red
2000 Château Lascombes France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
93 points
Very dark red color. PNP, drank 2 glasses over 2 hours. Brought this with us to Williamsburg for my son and had it at Fat Canary. This was wonderful in a brilliantly understated way. This bottle was feminine and perfectly ready for prime time. The nose has a wet earthiness, and a building perfume of violets, cassis and leather with well framed wood tones. The palate echoes the nose with a medium bodied build, cassis, cedar, soil infused damp wood and graphite. The tannins are most agreeable now and this has a nice lingering finish. Very enjoyable now and with another 10 years of life.

Flight 2 - Post-Defense Reception & Dinner at Le Yaca, Williamsburg (2 notes)

White - Sparkling
2009 Dom Pérignon Champagne France, Champagne
94 points
Light gold color. Picked this up locally in Williamsburg, a painful retail purchase after buying these from my usual source at a far, far better price. But, we needed another good bottle. Brought this to my son's PhD after party at his advisor's home. Shared with a large group of Physics professors and grad students which was pretty darn fun. We toasted Scott's new PhD and this was an apt accompaniment for out toasts. While technically this is young, it really feels ready and was very expressive. Classic Dom really, lemon, toasty, deep and layered, great mousse, excellent length, and a floral top note. This will be a bottle I will remember for what it was and the special significance of the moment.

White - Sparkling
2005 Dom Pérignon Champagne France, Champagne
95 points
Pale gold color. Brought this to our celebratory dinner for Scott's PhD in Nuclear Physics at Le Yaca in Williamsburg. Split bottle between the three of us over 90 minutes. After sipping on the 09 earlier in the evening, this was a beautiful way to cap a most amazing day and accompany a truly outstanding dinner. The 05 feels lithe and energetic, layered with lemon, pear, deeply toasted, mid weight plus, almond and refined minerality. This has everything I'm looking for, striking that balance of power and finesse. Drinking well with many years left.

Flight 3 - Dinner at Island House, Wachapreague (1 note)

White
2017 Chatham Vineyards Church Creek Steel Chardonnay Eastern Shore USA, Virginia, Eastern Virginia, Eastern Shore
90 points
Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. Off the list at a stop on the VA coast. This was impressive with excellent purity and a very clean, fresh presentation throughout with lemon and striking minerality, saline, medium full body with good depth and mouthfeel. I'd be happy to own some of this.

Flight 4 - Dinner at Fleurie, Charlottesville (1 note)

White - Off-dry
2014 Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Spätlese Germany, Nahe
94 points
Pale gold color. Drank a couple glasses over 2 hours. Ordered this off the list at Fleurie in Chalottesville. This is a fantastic bottle of Riesling; no great revelation there. Personally, I like Riesling young and this bottle is so bright and refreshing it would be very hard to keep your hands off. This has an amazingly complex floral nose, like sticking your face full on in a bouquet of mixed flowers, bright fruits, peach, pineapple, stone fruits, with a good tropical streak, excellent minerality and moderate petrol. The palate is a carbon copy of the nose and has excellent acidity. This comes off more like a cross between Kabinett and Spatese. Love it.

Flight 5 - Dinner at Waypoint, Williamsburg (2 notes)

Red
2010 Bergström Pinot Noir Bergström Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
92 points
Medium dark red color. PNP, drank 2 glasses over 2.5hrs. Sultry nose of earth, rose hips. baked red berries, and sous bois. The palate offers tart cherry, crushed rocks, sous bois, baked berries and velvety tannins on a medium body. 92+pts.
White - Sparkling
2006 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
96 points
Light golden color. Brought this to Waypoint in Williamsburg to cap off a week of celebrating and great seafood. After having had the '09 and '05 Dom earlier in the week, I'd been saving the best for last. And whille those bottles were also outstanding, there is something even more special to me about the '06 CdC. Having had this many times now and never tiring of it, it is the ethereal elegance and poise that drives and differentiates this wine. A plethora of exhuberent tiny bubbles streak up the glass with a creamy, caressing mousse. All the while the nose bursts with freshness and minerals, lightly floral, green apple, lemon, and a lovely toast and bready note. The palate follows through with that elegance, but shows more of the creamy texture while staying so lacy as the minerality dances across the tongue. Filled with energy and depth without every feeling heavy, this is so lifted by the fruit and acidity. It goes on and on as it just lingers on the tongue and in the mind. My condolesces to those who don't find the same pleasure of a Champagne like this and only appreciate the boldness of some (and don't get me wrong, I love them both). A great way to get in a few more toasts to the kid and our time together. 96+ to 97pts.

Flight 6 - Dinner at Antonio's, Williamsburg (1 note)

Red
2013 Diletto di Gellina Riserva Chianti Classico Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
90 points
Medium dark red color. PNP, drank 2 glasses over 90 minutes. Solid CCR, medium body, cherry fruit, anise, underbrush, fairly refined, nice tannins. Great with our bolognese.

Flight 7 - Barboursville Vineyards Tasting (12 notes)

White
2018 Barboursville Vineyards Pinot Grigio USA, Virginia, Central Virginia, Monticello
89 points
Pale gold color. Tasting pour. Apple, light and fresh with a tropical edge; very clean, quite delicious. This has a lot of vibrancy compared to the average pinot grigio.
White
2017 Barboursville Vineyards Chardonnay USA, Virginia
88 points
Tasting pour. Cold fermentation in stainless steel. 60% VA and 40% WA fruit. Pear, crisp good acidity.
White
2017 Barboursville Vineyards Chardonnay Reserve USA, Virginia
90 points
Light gold color. Tasting pour. Five months on oak. Lovely, rich, well composed, apple, spice, oak, creamy. Impressive.
White
2017 Barboursville Vineyards Vermentino Reserve USA, Virginia, Central Virginia, Monticello
89 points
Tasting pour. Very nice, good body, floral, orchard fruit.
White
2016 Barboursville Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc Reserve USA, Virginia
88 points
Tasting pour. Fairly typical with gooseberry, aromatic, cat pee, citrus.
White
2017 Barboursville Vineyards Viognier Reserve USA, Virginia
90 points
Tasting pour. Good sign when it makes you compare it to Condrieu. Excellent texture, tropical edge, floral, bright and fresh, good length. 90+ to 91pts.
Rosé
2017 Rocca di Montemassi Renaissance Rose Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
88 points
Light orange salmon color. Tasting pour. From Barboursville's sister property in Maremma. 60% Sangiovese and 40% Petit Syrah. This was nice too, more depth and structure, deep cherry, spices.
Red
2017 Barboursville Vineyards Barbera Reserve USA, Virginia, Central Virginia, Orange County
89 points
Tasting pour. Tastes like Barbera, and I mean that in a good way. Raspberry, deep dark berry, good concentration, rustic, good acidity and approachable tannins.
Red
2017 Barboursville Vineyards Merlot USA, Virginia, Central Virginia, Orange County
86 points
Tasting pour. About what you'd expect, but decent, the rreserve is a big step up. Dark fruits, firm tannins, light medium body, rustic.
Red
2014 Barboursville Vineyards Merlot Reserve USA, Virginia, Central Virginia, Orange County
89 points
Tasting pour. Quite a step up from the '17 base Merlot, this has some age that seems to have served well. I like the fruit here, dark reds and black fruit, more velvety than expected, medium body, balanced with edges. Merlot is dicey in VA and this is a well made example. Enjoyable.
Red
2016 Barboursville Vineyards Cabernet Franc Reserve USA, Virginia, Central Virginia, Orange County
88 points
Tasting pour. Good, but this was the one wine that I expected more. Dark fruits, cassis, plum, cherry, oak, full bodied.
Red
2014 Barboursville Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve USA, Virginia, Central Virginia, Monticello
87 points
Tasting pour. Nothing offensive here, solid wine, black fruit, oak, grainy tannins. 87 to 88pts. Agree with comments on the price though - at 35 it is a tough pill.

Flight 8 - Williamsburg Winery Tasting (7 notes)

Rosé
2018 Williamsburg Winery Dry Rosé USA, Virginia
85 points
Tasting pour. Peach, apricot, strawberry, light, a litlle alcohol and a bit thin.
White
2017 Williamsburg Winery Viognier Wessex Hundred USA, Virginia
84 points
Tasting pour. Pretty disappointing for a VA Viognier. Citric and somewhat bitter, lacking in texture and complexity.
White
2017 Williamsburg Winery Chardonnay Stainless Steel Fermented USA, Virginia
86 points
Tasting pour. Apple, a little sour, touch of peach, clean. Simple but satisfying.
White
2017 Williamsburg Winery Petit Manseng USA, Virginia
89 points
Tasting pour. Pale gold color. Banana, citrus, medium full bodied, creamy texture, nice stoney accent, just a tad bitter on the finish, but quite good. 89 to 90pts.
Red
2016 Williamsburg Winery Merlot Wessex Hundred USA, Virginia
86 points
Tasting pour. Tart cherry, vanilla, wood spices, dark raspberry. No more Merlot here after rot caused them to piull out the vines. Did not replace given the difficult growing conditions here.
Red
2015 Williamsburg Winery Cabernet Franc Trianon USA, Virginia
88 points
Tasting pour. This was fun, funky, deep berriy nose, medium body with a satin texture, quite earthy with fine tannins. Good.
Red
2015 Williamsburg Winery Adagio USA, Virginia
88 points
Tasting pour. Signature wine, a blend of 60PV, 15M, 15T, 10CF. Funk, dark tart to sour fruits, full bodied, oak, firm tannins, earth, very young. I'm told this is a 25 year ager; this clearly needs more time right now. 88pts(+?).
