Flight 1 (8 notes)

White - Sparkling
2010 Jérôme Prévost Champagne La Closerie Extra Brut Les Beguines France, Champagne
golden color with very fine bubbles. Nose yeasty golden apple, deep. Palate bruised apple, golden fruit, *tart* acidity. with time, a richness to the body, layered, with a hint of maple sweetness. Wonderful, a treat to try. 94 pts
White - Sparkling
2000 Philipponnat Champagne Brut Clos des Goisses France, Champagne
vigorous bubbles yet fine bead; golden color. Nose a bit reduced/funky at first, then some floral notes after swirling. Palate pronounced minerality, high acidity, powerful. Some pure nectarine fruit, and some brioche richness. Still very young, great potential. 93 pts with upside.

Rosé
2000 R. López de Heredia Rioja Rosado Gran Reserva Viña Tondonia Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
light pink orange color, with tea tinge. Nose pruney/stewed fruit. Palate nutty, almost sherry-like; smoky. opens up with time, develops some smoky notes, hints of honey, some minerals, and some puckering acidity, though still with lightly stewed plums.
Overall a bit too oxidative for me, either that or not the freshest bottle. Interesting to try but not worth the hype at least tonight. Hopefully shows better for others. 86 pts
White - Off-dry
1996 Alfred Merkelbach Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
golden straw color. Nose heavily floral, with hint of ginger. Palate rich texture, layered; nice acidity providing lift; off-dry but overall in a pleasant/balanced fashion, light botrytis. Still vibrant and a lovely drink. 93 pts
White
2004 Domaine Michel Niellon Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos St. Jean France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
golden color. Nose flinty, lemon. Palate lemony, some cream, good acidity; some oily richness; overall nice balance. Still drinking very well, checks all the boxes for a white burg of some depth and at peak to my taste. 92 pts
Red
1998 Louis Jadot Chapelle-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru
light transparent ruby-violet, with light separation at the edges. Nose fruity, some hints of baking spice, some earth. Palate tight at first; red cherries, silky texture with nice depth of flavor; some tannins on finish. Tasted blind, guessed very young, surprising to realize this is 21 years old. Rec either decanting or letting it age more. 92 pts with upside
Red
1997 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Santo Stefano Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
very light transparent ruby color. Nose some stewed fruits. Palate stewed cherries at first, but with time more cool red fruit, bright bing cherries, with some richness. very light fine tannins towards the finish. Perhaps heading past peak? Still enjoyable especially with time. 92 pts
Red
2002 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
dark ruby color. Nose savory dark fruit with bacon aroma. Palate sweet fruit, chocolatey. a bit too rich/modern however perhaps it needed more time (either sideways or in a decanter)? 89 pts.
