Introduction

Another year another pinotpalooza...this time they put the smoker outside this year so marginally less stalky...but only marginally...this time I took a little packed lunch and spent all day tasting which was rather fun

black cherry, sweet spice. Juicy, tight, black fruited.
Red

Jubey, pretty fruit, cherry mostly. Juicy, slightly ashy, pretty fruit on the palate as well, soft, smashable. begs cold chicken. Lovely.
Red
2018 Akarua Pinot Noir Rua New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago
Medium minus intensity aromas of cherry, pretty again but with a savoury tone, nice nose. tight chalky tannins rule the palate, fruit still there, alcohol warmth though less intrusive that lends length. Hmm.
Red
2018 Akarua Pinot Noir 25 Steps New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago
An almost musty/chalky note initially, cream, savoury & sweet spice, fruit muted here. Sharp acid, tight tannins, a little more savoury with berry fruit. Long. Alcohol warmth. Time?

Red
2014 Charteris Pinot Noir The Winter Vineyard New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago
Stalks, oak, earthy noters, sweet spice over black fruits. juicy with chalky textured tannins, black fruits, those tannins are quite drying. The alcohol is contained and lends spicy warmth to the finish.
Red

Red
2016 Gibbston Valley Pinot Noir Glenlee Vineyard New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago
From Magnum. The wild ferment is a little more obvious here which lends complexity, the fruit prettiness; whole berry more obvious as well, oak present but restrained. Lovely nose. And the palate is a reflection of this, the tannins are more chalky but this is really good.
Red
2016 Grasshopper Rock Pinot Noir Earnscleugh Vineyard New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago
A little wood glue, sulphur, caramel, red and black fruits; cherry and raspberry. Sharp acid, tight grainy tannins, close down the palate. Alcohol warmth on the finish. Nah.
Red
2015 Nockies Palette Pinot Noir Georgetown New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago
A slightly corky note, lots of oak spice, red currant and cranberry, meaty undertone. Smells skinny if you can imagine such a thing. Juicy acid and, again, a little wet with non intrusive alcohol warmth. Nah.
Red
2016 Nockies Palette Pinot Noir Georgetown New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago
Low intensity aromas of cedar, slightly gamey, a little polished red fruit. Juicy, massively tight drying tannins. Fruit does not support these oak levels.
Red
2016 Neck of the Woods Pinot Noir New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Gibbston
Hmm, slightly meaty, blackberry, a little pretty jubey note. Juicy, still tannicly tight, talc textured, slight alcohol warmth. Okay. Time.
Red
2017 Neck of the Woods Pinot Noir Central Otago New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago
Slight ashy red and black jubey fruit, pretty, slight cedar. Juicy acid, slightly unripe fruit, grainy drying tannins...should have pulled back on the oak.
Red
2018 Neck of the Woods Pinot Noir Bendigo New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago
Spiced strawberry, pretty and jubey. That prettiness again on the palate as well. Silky though drying tannins. Young but pleasant.
Red
2017 Peregrine Pinot Noir Saddleback New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago
Jubey black cherry, very slight stalks, and oak spice. Juicy, pretty fruit fades a little quickly. Meh.
Red
2016 Peregrine Pinot Noir New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago
Dense black fruit, plenty of oak spice, slightly meaty underpin. Smells a bit roided. Juicy, dense, yes, but balanced; oak present as are tannins but controlled and supporting of that black fruit. Nice
Red
2013 Peregrine Pinot Noir New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago
wild ferment funkiness, a little gamey, an almost oxidised note, red and black fruits, plenty of spice, tight tannins married to a little rhubarb note. It's a bit out of whack. Guessing it comes from a more challenging vintage? Meh.
Red
2018 Rockburn Pinot Noir Devil's Staircase New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago
Spicy, jubey red cherries, pretty. In the mouth it's a little confected for me. Nah.
Red
2017 Rockburn Pinot Noir New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago

Red
2016 Escarpment Pinot Noir Te Rehua New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough
Ripe black cherry with a little blackberry, plenty of oak spice, worked nose. Ripe, concentrated, fully roided, big tannic grip. Boom. Years?
Red
2017 Escarpment Pinot Noir Kupe New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough
Plenty of ripe, confected and jubey cherry, oak. Young, fruit less obviously ripe here, oak is probably a little too much for the fruit. Time may help. Long. Hmm.
Red
2017 Luna Pinot Noir New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough
A herbaceous almost cats pee note, sweet and sour spice, muted jubey cherry fruit. Savoury, wet, bitter, big tannins dry things out. Nah.

Red
2018 Martinborough Vineyard Pinot Noir Te Tera New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough
Green, grassy, herbaceous, blackcurrant lozenges. Jubey on the palate with talc textured tannins. Quite simple, very young. Time?
Red
2016 Main Divide Pinot Noir Waipara New Zealand, South Island, Canterbury, Waipara
gamey wild ferment, slightly peppery toned sweet spices, a little coffee and wet black cherry. in the mouth it's savoury with slightly stalky, tannins travel long joined by alcohol heat which rather obstructs the fruit.
Red
2016 Pegasus Bay Pinot Noir New Zealand, South Island, Canterbury, Waipara
Similar spice profile to the nose of the Main Divide, more pronounced though. Sour black cherry, a little plain chocolate. In the mouth it's juicy, the fruit, less sour than the nose; quite wild, silky tannins and alcohol warmth join black cherry lozenges on the finish.
Red
2017 Dog Point Vineyard Pinot Noir New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
Wild ferment funkiness, struck match, black cherry over blackberry, sweet spice more supportive here. Juicy, savoury, tight tannins, similar dark fruits. Fresh though. Nice.
Red
2010 Dog Point Vineyard Pinot Noir New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
Stalky, slight blood, meat, muted black fruit. juicy, savoury, black fruits and tannins are nicely balanced but the alcohol heat is intrusive on the finish. Hmm. 1/2 an hour in the fridge will help.
Red
2016 Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
Jubey red and black cherry, a little spice...on the palate it's similarly spicy with black fruit, wet, talc textured tannins, juicy, alcohol warmth. Okay.
Red

Stalks, coffee, slight sweet spice, brambles. Juicy, fresh acid, black berry fruit, spice more muted, drying talc textured tannins, touches of black tea. Hmm.
Red
2016 Greywacke Pinot Noir New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
Blackberry with a slight creamy underpin, sweet spice, very slight ash. Juicy, blackberry fruit, wonderful balance of slightly chalky textured but controlled tannins, fruit and acid. Long, alcohol warmth not intrusive. Good.
Red
2015 Greywacke Pinot Noir New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
Wild ferment, savoury spice, blackberry lozenge. Juicy, slightly jubey, slight stalks tied to the drying chalky tannins, fruit a little muted.
Red
2018 Jackson Estate Pinot Noir Shelter Belt New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough

Red
2014 Jackson Estate Pinot Noir Vintage Widow New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
Slight wood glue, biscuit, slight oxidative notes. Black fruits. Juicy acid, confected palate, drying tannins but it's all a bit out of whack. Nah.
Red
2013 Jackson Estate Pinot Noir Gum Emperor New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
Wild ferment, wood glue, ripe confect fruit. Quite jammy and disappointing on the palate for me. Nah.
Red
2018 Ghost Rock Vineyard Pinot Noir Supernatural Australia, Tasmania
Stalks, aniseed, red fruit on the simple nose. Wet, fresh, stalks less intrusive on the palate, red fruit. Simple. Smashable.
Red
2018 Ghost Rock Vineyard Pinot Noir Australia, Tasmania
Slightly meaty wild ferment, red fruit, strawberries in fact. The strawberry fruit is a little whole berry jubey in the mouth the tannins slightly drying. Simple and young.
Red
2018 Ghost Rock Vineyard Pinot Noir Bonadale Australia, Tasmania
Low intensity aromas of, well, spice...both sweet and savoury, a little wood glue, a little red fruit. More of the same on the palate. <shrugs>
Red
2018 Lost Farm Pinot Noir Australia, Tasmania, Tamar Valley
Red over black fruits, very fruit forward with a slightly jubey note. In the mouth the fruit is joined by tannic burr especially on the mid palate. Nicely done.
Red
2018 Meadowbank Estate Pinot Noir Australia, Tasmania
Wild ferment funkiness over jubey cherry and a little strawberry with a wood glue & stalky underpin.Sourly juicy with jubey fruit - very sour snakes - mid palate burr. Medium length. Low interest...
Red
2019 Norfolk Rise Pinot Noir Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast
Ripe, slightly gamey black fruits, stalks and sweet spice though alcohol heat lends pepper on the nose. Juicy, peppery, alcohol warmth too much for the slightly insipid fruit. meh
Red
2018 Ninth Island Pinot Noir Australia, Tasmania
Medium minus intensity aromas of a little gamey raspberry and strawberry, lozenges but also an impression of over extraction. this is reinforced by the palate which shows plenty of tannin and black tea settling like a blanked over the fruit
Red
2018 Ghost Rock Vineyard Pinot Noir Oulton SV Australia, Tasmania, Northern Tasmania
Dusty, reductive almost, stalks. In the mouth it's sour, stalky over strawberry and silky tannins...
Red
2018 Pipers Brook Vineyard Pinot Noir Estate Australia, Tasmania
Stalks though this does smell a bit 'worked'...over extracted if you will, dusty red berry fruit, sweet spice...and so it proves on the palate. Overdone. Alcohol heat as well. Meh.
Red
2018 Stefano Lubiana Pinot Noir Primavera Australia, Tasmania, Southern Tasmania
Wild ferment, slightly gamey, sweet spice, muted red berry fruit. Juicy and fruity in a fruit lozenge way. Chamois soft tannic burr. Simple but pleasant enough.
Red
2017 Stefano Lubiana Pinot Noir Australia, Tasmania
Gamey, struck match, extracted red over blackberry fruit, sweet spice. Smells "built for age". Less so on the palate, a bit more controlled oak and alcohol heat on the finish. Hmm.
Red
2017 Sailor Seeks Horse Pinot Noir Australia, Tasmania, Southern Tasmania
Stalks vs extracted fruit; cherry, earthy, jubey lozenge quality. Quite sour on the palate, chamois tannins, fruit persists. Hmm
Red
2018 Sailor Seeks Horse Pinot Noir Australia, Tasmania, Southern Tasmania
Slight stalks but also sour jubey fruit, slightly spiced. Sourly jubey on the palate with grainy, drying tannins closing down the palate. Hmm.
Red
2019 Spring Vale Pinot Noir Melrose Australia, Tasmania, Freycinet Coast
Sourly jubey red berry; wild strawberries harvested too young with sour strawberry snakes. More of the same on the palate with a soft, easy, freshness. Slightly silky tannins on finish. Okay.
Red
2017 Spring Vale Pinot Noir Australia, Tasmania, Freycinet Coast
Jubey, stalky, crunch strawberry and black berry fruit; very pretty. A little sweet spice. Concentrated and quite rich on the palate, the oak more to the fore, a little alcohol warmth on the finish. Nice though.
Red
2013 Spring Vale Pinot Noir Australia, Tasmania, Freycinet Coast
Gamey, meaty, slightly oxidative, fruit forward but ashy/stalky note persists, savoury, earth. On the palate a touch of residual sugar, savoury, tight, slightly ashy tannins, the alcohol warmth a little more prominent. Meh
Red
2018 Coppabella Pinot Noir Lock & Key Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Tumbarumba
Smells wet with dark berry (though wild) fruit. juicy, tangy, black hued fruits, slightly bitter on the finish...Hmm
Red
2018 Coppabella Pinot Noir Single Vineyard Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Tumbarumba
slightly riper than the, for example, Tasmanian offerings, red over black berry, very slight jubiness. Juicy, slightly sour, red over black berry with talc textured and persistent tannins. Young.
Red
2018 Coppabella Pinot Noir The Crest Single Vineyard Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Tumbarumba
Oak, slightly jubey red over black fruit, a little more concentrated than the estate wine, savoury spice. Juicy acid married to extracted and worked notes, touch of residual sugar almost, grippy, drying tannins close down the palate.
Red
2016 Coppabella Pinot Noir Sirius Single Vineyard Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Tumbarumba
Gamey, extracted; a little, ahh, overwrought. Spice. It's quite unpleasant on the palate as well. Nah.
Red
2018 Gilbert Family Wines Pinot Noir Australia, New South Wales, Central Ranges, Orange
Pretty, jubey black fruits, stalks, slight spice. Juicy, spiced, oak and alcohol are too much for the fruit. Tight tannins.
Red
2018 Gilbert Family Wines Gilbert by Simon Gilbert Pinot Noir 777 Australia, New South Wales, Central Ranges, Orange
Medium minus intensity aromas of cherry and spice. in the mouth it's quite wet, some tannic burr but lacks fruit on the palate.
Red
2018 Gilbert Family Wines Pinot Noir Barrel Select Australia, New South Wales, Central Ranges, Orange
oak water, spice, quite perfumed, slight black fruits, tightly tannic. On the palate it's oak water, drying chalky tannins, the fruit doesn't support the oak. Too much wood for me.
Red
2018 Gilbert Family Wines Lignée Australia, New South Wales, Central Ranges, Orange
From magnum. Just opened, peppery, spiced blackberry, earthy. Alcohol heat looms large on the palate, silky, lightweight tannins lend breadth, fruit a little muted. Meh.
Red
2018 Moorooduc Estate Pinot Noir Devil's Bend Creek Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
slight stalks, ripe red strawberry notes that are pretty and jubey. Ooh, lovely, rich but fresh fruit carries and is joined by gentle tannic burr, balanced. Lovely. great QPR for an Aussie Pinot.
Red
2016 Moorooduc Estate Pinot Noir Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Wild ferment, biscuit, cherry over strawberries, a little extracted on the nose, very slight stalks (or might just be a touch of herbaceousness)...And this is proven on the palate. It's a little bit overdone for me.

Red
2017 Moorooduc Estate Pinot Noir Robinson Vineyard Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Similar levels of extraction to the estate wine but it seems to have retained a little more freshness, perfumed cedar and a touch of wild ferment are in support. That freshness carries to the palate which the wine out though it's still a little extracted and over oaked for me. Time may help.
Red
2018 Quealy Pinot Noir Balnarring Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Lightweight, pretty fruit, slightly jubey - a touch of raspberry - lightly spiced. Juicy, light, fresh, fruit doesn't quite carry long enough for the tannins; food will defo help.
Red
2017 Quealy Pinot Noir Balnarring Campbell & Christine Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Stalks! Sour red berries, sweet oak spice, pretty jubiness. juicy, stalks, fruit and tannins form a ball on the mid palate. Hmm
Red
2017 Quealy Pinot Noir Musk Creek Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Slight wood glue, muted cherry fruit, a little cream and vanilla, with time a touch of wild ferment funkiness. Juicy, dense, quite rich on the palate. Fruit/tannin balance very good...like fruit flavoured tannins. A little alcohol heat on the finish though. Perhaps some little residual sugar. Okay.
Red
2017 Quealy Pinot Noir Seventeen Rows Balnarring Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Dusty, perhaps a little reductive...a little meh for me.
Red
2018 Yabby Lake Vineyard Pinot Noir Red Claw Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
A little clay, red berries and cherry, fresh rather than pretty, a little savoury spice. On the palate the acid is juicy but the fruit is a bit baked and there is loads of alcohol heat. Nah.
Red
2018 Yabby Lake Vineyard Pinot Noir Single Vineyard Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Slightly concentrated red fruits, oak, sweet spice, slight stalks, ripe cherry and berry. Juicy, tight tannins, fruit a little warm. Nah.
Red
2018 Kooyong Pinot Noir Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Pretty, slightly jubey, ripe red cherry, some oak spice. Tight on the palate; tannins are a touch too bold for the fruit, a touch of alcoholic warmth on the back palate. Meh
Red
2018 Ashton Hills Pinot Noir Piccadilly Valley Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Piccadilly Valley
Smells a little dense, dusty black over red fruit, slight stalks, sweet spice. Fruit and tannins have good balance, this is more fresh than juicy, tannins are quite silky, slightly drying. A good entry level wine.
Red
2018 Ashton Hills Pinot Noir Estate Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills
Gamey, black over slightly jubey red berry fruit...actually more confected than jubey. Sweet spice, again a slightly dusty quality. Juicy, soft tannins ripe fruit with a confected note. Okay.
Red
2018 Ashton Hills Pinot Noir Reserve Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills
Caramelised oak and alcohol warmth dominate black and red cherry, plenty of sweet spice (unsurprisingly) and there is some meaty notes. alcohol warmth quickly swamps the pretty confected fruit though the tannins are, again, well managed.
Red
2019 Fleet Wines Pinot Noir Australia, Victoria, Gippsland
Lightweight, pretty, jubey raspberry with a slightly sour snake underpin and some stalks. Same sour and slightly stalky fruit on the palate with grippy, grainy tannins. Okay.
Red
2019 Fleet Wines Pinot Noir Leongatha Australia, Victoria, Gippsland
It smells a bit like a Kriek cherry beer backed by earthy, stalky spice. In the mouth it's juicy with jubey sour fruit, slightly stalky tannic burr. Hmm.
Red
2019 Fleet Wines Pinot Noir Elevate Australia, Victoria, Gippsland
Apparently there is some Pinot Gris in here as well. Italian medicinal herbs backed by stalks on the nose. a little coffee with a smear of red fruit on the palate with those massive stalks lending tannin. Nah.
Red
2019 Fleet Wines Pinot Noir Nostalgia Australia, Victoria, Gippsland
Mineral, slightly smoky stalk inclusion, creamy, a touch of red fruit. This is sour on the palate with ashy and red fruit noters competing with floury textured tannins
Red
2018 Les Vignobles Foncalieu Le Versant France, Languedoc Roussillon
Red over black fruit, very slight spice. Simple nose. In the mouth it's savoury and tightly tannic; grippy and chalky which closes down the palate.
Red

Plenty of caramel oak, slightly dusty red currant fruit, slight spice. Juicy, tight tannins, fresh, red currant is a little riper. Hmm

Red
2017 Oakridge Pinot Noir Vineyard Series Willowlake Vineyard Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley

Red
2017 Oakridge Pinot Noir Vineyard Series Henk's Vineyard Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
Jubey, pretty, ripe red fruit backed by slight stalks and baking spice. Juicy initially then densely structured, drying tannic burr...the fruit does not persist here
Red
2018 Oakridge Pinot Noir 864 Aqueduct Block Henk Vineyard Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
Slightly jubey cherry notes, sweet oak spice, tight oak tannins close down the palate, fruit does struggle past this though - time will help.
Red
2018 Vinteloper Wines Pinot Noir Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills
Stalky and ashy, slight ripe/jubey raspberry over strawberry. Stalky tannins on the palate dominate
Red
2017 Vinteloper Wines Pinot Noir Odeon Lenswood Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Lenswood
the stalks here are restrained and controlled and offer support to the red and black fruit. The palate is a reflection of this with a little smoky underpin. Hmm
Red
2018 Marchand and Burch Pinot Noir Villages Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Great Southern
Slight confected black berry fruit and dusty sweet spice. Juicy, tight, confected fruit, alcohol warmth, a bit 'big'.

Red
2017 Rob Dolan Pinot Noir Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
Sour red cherry, slight stalks, sweet spice, cream, a little caramel. Juicy but quite pretty fruit, a little alcohol heat is a touch intrusive on the finish and there is plenty of tannic grip as well though the fruit persists. Hmm
Red
2018 Rob Dolan Pinot Noir Black Label Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
Earthy, spicy, cherry, slight plums, polished oak. Juicy, spiced, tight tannic grip is a little too much for the fruit. Very young.
Red

Stalky, spiced, sour red cherry...and so it proves on the palate. Meh.
Red

Red
2017 Santolin Wines Pinot Noir Gruyere Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
Slight stalks, fruit is riper on this offering from Santolin and the wine is denser smelling without losing any of it's jubey prettiness, concentrated. Juicy, fruit similar though fresher, raspy drying tannins. Time for me.
Red
2016 Creation Wines Pinot Noir Reserve South Africa, Cape South Coast, Walker Bay, Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley
Concentrated, slightly ashy black fruits. Juicy, tight, slightly sour black fruits, chalky tannins. Hmm
Red
2016 Chamonix Pinot Noir Feldspar South Africa, Coastal Region, Franschhoek Valley
Sour, sharply acrid, wood glue, nasty nose. Palate is not an improvement for me. Ugh.

Closing

Based on this tasting New Zealand are still well ahead of Australia though the gap is beginning to lesson...by the end of this I just wanted a cleansing ale. Quite a few interesting wines, a lot of wines that felt too young (unsurprisingly)
