Wine Tasting Group - Cabernet Sauvignon & its Parents

Classic Wine Storage, Dallas, TX

Tasted December 14, 2019 by James Kim with 164 views

Introduction

Small group of us gathered together at Classic, hosted by Clare & Matt. Brian kindly provided steaks to accompany the green beans and other roasted vegetables by Clare. The theme was cabernet sauvignon and its parents, cabernet franc and sauvignon blanc. A nice night with great food, wines, and company.

Tight aromas with an initial whiff of brett, and then giving some hints of cherries and herbs. Palate showed more with dark cherries, ripe blackberries, plums, lots of herbs, green peppers, and minerals. Mild-moderate tannins on midpalate with nice acids. Medium bodied with an elegant mouthfeel. Doesn't have the concentration of Les Picasses and Singuliere. Also, a bit disjointed now. May improve with some short- to mid-term ageing.

Decanted for 2 h, then back into bottle. Tight with aromas showing some mild brett and sweet black cherries. Palate showed a bit more with black cherries, plums, herbs, green peppers, and minerals. Nice acids. Deeper with greater concentration than the Bernabes. Nice depth with an elegant mouthfeel. Still young and very structured. Was somewhat grumpy to be opened now. Wait at least 2-3 years, if not 5, to open next bottle. 90+

2015 Domaine de l'Ecu Mephisto France, Vin de France
90 points
Deep and concentrated aromas with a hint of brett on the nose to start followed by more prominent ripe blackberries, plums, and mild green peppers. Nice and dense ripe black cherries and blackberries on palate with minerals, herbs and green peppers. Dense flavors and mouthfeel with some mild brett on the finish. Continues with my impression that red wines raised in amphora give a very dense mouthfeel and flavors. Liked this but feels very primary and even unformed (?). Will be very interesting to have an aged example, say 10-15 years old.

2016 Château Doisy-Daëne Grand Vin Sec France, Bordeaux

100% Sauvignon Blanc dry wine. Nice apple and mild gooseberry aromas with nice minerals and herbs. Lemon, tart apples, mild gooseberries, and minerals on the palate that are accented by nice mild oak spice. Nice acids with nicely expressive flavors. Nicely done. 90+

2007 Robert Keenan Winery Cabernet Franc Spring Mountain District USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District
89 points
Bright, ripe blackberry aromas with hints of herbs. Ripe blackberries on the palate with mild herbs and just a hint green peppers. Moderately prominent tannins and well appointed moderate oak on the finish. While well made and tasty, the wine did not speak of cabernet franc to me but rather closer to CA cabernet sauvignon. Missing were the nice vegetal and herbal flavors and aromas that I associate with cab franc.

79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc. Decanted off sediment for 4 hr in wine fridge, then back in bottle and drank 2 h later. Beautiful, elegant aromas of currants, herbs, and minerals. Elegant medium bodied palate with cherries, currants, herbs, leather and minerals. Excellent acids and mild tannins. Nicely balanced and concentrated with a seamless flow of flavors. Lovely with grilled steak.

From Mt. Veeder in Napa. Aromas of currants, mild herbs, and hints of saddle leather. Nice, elegant palate with currants, mild leather, and herbs. Moderate tannins on midpalate. Nice acids on the finish. A restrained, elegant Napa cab that's drinking very well. Very much enjoyed this.

86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot from vineyards in both the mountains and valley of Napa. Rich currant and ripe plum aromas with hints of herbs. A nicely balanced palate of currants, plums and herbs. Moderate tannins on the mid palate. Nice acids give the wine lift but there is also a velvety mouthfeel without feeling plush. A nice balance between rich but not over the top fruit and the acid/tannin structure to prevent any flabbiness. Nicely done.
