Introduction

Some big Rieslings

Flight 1 (1 note)

White
2009 Weingut Keller Hubacker Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Rheinhessen
92 points
not blind
Typical Keller nose, a bit too sweet and broad, due to the vintage. Yellow stone fruits, ripe pineapple, at his peak. 92

Flight 2 (1 note)

White
1998 Dr. Bürklin-Wolf Forster Kirchenstück Riesling Germany, Pfalz
91 points
not blind, double magnum

For a Kirchsenstück too few concentration, few fruits, no nuts, good acidity, not oxidized but too short in the finish. 98 is a mediocre vintage not comparable with 97 or 99. 91 would not wait longer, won't get better

Flight 3 (3 notes)

White
2007 Dr. Bürklin-Wolf Forster Pechstein Riesling Germany, Pfalz
95 points
not blind
Impressive, great concentration and density. very focussed, flintstone, balanced, not my favorite vintage but this one was convincing.

White
2018 Weingut Keller Piesporter Schubertslay Riesling Kabinett Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
93 points
not blnd
One of the best Kabis I had. Not sweet, filigree and balanced. Great one. 92-93
White
2005 Franz Hirtzberger Riesling Smaragd Singerriedel Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
94 points
not blind, from Magnum
Colourwise really dark golden but very fresh in the palate. Powerful, yellow stone fruits but refreshing acidity. Great length. From "better" bottles at least 5-7 more years ahead. 94-95

Flight 4 (4 notes)

White
2011 Weingut Keller Hubacker Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Rheinhessen
94 points
blind
drank it side by side with Kirchspiel 2011. This time the Hubacker was winner. Herbal, spicy with great acidity, reaching his peak. 93-94

2011 Weingut Keller Kirchspiel Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Rheinhessen
92 points
blind
drank it side by side with Hubacker 2011. This time "weaker" than Hubacker. A bit short in length and density. 91-92
White
2011 Weingut Keller Morstein Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Rheinhessen
93 points
not blind
The first bottle was less concentrated than the second one (some discussed of cork). Saline, herbal, for 2011 fresh and precise. 93
White
2011 Weingut Keller Morstein Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Rheinhessen
95 points
Not blind
Second bottle, much better than the first one. More concentration and salinity. More focussed in the finish. Some apricot and pink grapefruit in the finish. 95

Flight 5 (4 notes)

White
2004 Weingut Keller Kirchspiel Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Rheinhessen
96 points
not blind,
A legend, drank it side by side with Wittmann Morstein 2004, Hermannshöhle 2004 and Molitor WS 2004 Auslese ** trocken.

This was the most elegant wine in this "flight". I would prefer it over HH and Morstein slightly that day but the finesse of this wine was amazing. Really fragile and precise. Close to his peak. No oxidation signs. 96+
White
2004 Wittmann Westhofener Morstein Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Rheinhessen
95 points

Some popcorn and roasted nuts. Very powerful and elegant likewise. Intrusive but nicely balanced. 95
White
2004 Dönnhoff Hermannshöhle Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Nahe
95 points
not blind
had it together in a flight with Keller Kirchspiel and Wittmann Morstein and Molitor Auslese WS dry ** same vintage. All about the same level. HH was second in my ranking. I had it a few times a bit fresher but faszinating density. More mascular than usually. Ripe fruits but balanced with its salinity. 95
White
2004 Markus Molitor Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese ** trocken Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
94 points
not blind
Pristine bottle, creamy and more Burgundy style than the others 2004 in this flight. Citrus, refreshing acidity. For some the best wine in this flight. 94+

Flight 6 (2 notes)

White
2010 Weingut Keller Pettenthal Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Rheinhessen
95 points
Not blind
a bit darker in colour than the last one a few month ago but very fresh in the palate. Spicy, flintstone, saline, great length. Far away from his peak. 95-96

2001 Dr. Bürklin-Wolf Forster Kirchenstück Riesling Germany, Pfalz
95 points
not blind
I had it a few times a bit fresher but still an amazing wine, did not reach his peak. lime dominated, a bit roasted nuts, white peach but not overriped. Great acidity as alaways in 2001. 95

Flight 7 (2 notes)

White
2013 Schäfer-Fröhlich Bockenauer Felseneck Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Nahe
95 points
Blind, from magnum
Nailed it. Typical Felseneck nose, unbelievable fresh. Saline, spicy, green apple and yuzu. At least 10 more years. Cracking acidity but very perfectly balanced. 95(96)

1998 Georg Breuer Rüdesheimer Berg Schloßberg Riesling Germany, Rheingau
97 points
not blind
One of the best wines of the evening. Much better than a few weeks ago in the vertical tasting. Awesome dense and complex. Great length. Herbal and lime notes, no oxidation, at his peak. At least 5 more years.. 97
White
2005 Weingut Keller Riesling G-Max Germany, Rheinhessen
96 points
blind
One of the last wines of the evening. I guessed G-Max 2014 or 15. This was one of the best G-Max 2005. Very fresh, less Burgundy style as usually (not roasted aromas), less overripe fruits. Very precise finish. Not at his end. Normally this vintage is one of the weaker ones but today very convincing. 96+

Closing

Top 3
Schäfer Fröhlich Felseneck 2009
Breuer Schloßberg 1998
Keller G-Max 2005

Keller Kichspiel 2004 very elegant and reluctant
