Flight 1 (1 note)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Famille Moussé Champagne l'Or d'Eugène Blanc de Noirs Brut France, Champagne
£14/glass. Rich BdN and biscuity, very interesting to read about the solera. Perhaps lacking a touch of crispness, possibly because served by the glass. Enjoyed.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

White
2016 Domaine des Marnes Blanches Chardonnay Côtes du Jura Les Normins France, Jura, Côtes du Jura
£13.50/glass. Quite a distinctive Chardonnay, leaning fresh rather than ripe, but without the crispness of a Chablis. With salsify tagliatelle, vin jaune & cheddar sauce, cured egg yolk ad black truffle. Decent match for a pretty complicated dish.
Red
2016 Jean Baptiste Ponsot Rully 1er Cru La Fosse France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Rully 1er Cru
90 points
£13/glass. Very good Pinot, earthy and spicy and a terrific match for smoked short-rib ragu pappardelle. A standout combination.

Flight 3 (2 notes)

White
2017 Stolpman Roussanne USA, California, Central Coast, Ballard Canyon
90 points
£12.50/glass. Immediately-apparent varietal characteristics, amped up in Californian style without going over the edge. Very much enjoyed. With venison loin, Jerusalem artichoke, roasted quince and trompette mushroom. Chosen to match the quince, which it did very well, and to bring out that not-quite-sweetness in some of the other components of the dish.
Red
2016 Day Zinfandel USA, California, Sonoma County
£13.50/glass. Dark and brambly is right, not cloying but not particularly fresh (perhaps because served by the glass). Good texture. With venison loin, jerusalem artichoke, quince, trompette. Chosen to go with the Jerusalem artichoke which is otherwise pretty tough to match, without overwhelming the venison. Good pairing, decent complement, but no more than the sum of the parts.

Flight 4 (2 notes)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2011 Mouthes Le Bihan Côtes-de-Duras La Lionne et le Désert France, Southwest France, Côtes-de-Duras
£16.50/glass. To go with Roquefort and Beaufort cheeses (with two different honeys and seed crackers), as well as the banoffee, nutmeg and caramelised pecan mousse. Terrific with both. Deep and rich and treacly without being at all cloying, a pleasant surprise given the depth of colour.
White - Fortified
N.V. Famille Moussé Ratafia de Champagne Edmond Ratafia t'en penses quoi? France, Champagne, Ratafia de Champagne
£12.50/glass. To go with Roquefort and Beaufort cheeses (with two different honeys and seed crackers), as well as the banoffee, nutmeg and caramelised pecan mousse. Good match with both. Rafafia liqueur added to stop the fermentation, giving it more of a spirit-like sense than a dessert wine. Much more refreshing than I would expect from a dessert wine, making it a really good match for both the richness and the sweetness.
