Introduction

A long time since we have had one of these...it was lovely to catch up with everyone again and try a bucket load of non-themed wines...

Flight 1 (12 notes)

White - Sparkling
2010 Brown Brothers Patricia Pinot Chardonnay Brut Australia, Victoria, North East, Whitlands
Toast, lemon, grass, biscuit, a little lemon curd. Juicy, tight textured, citrus, biscuit, frothy mousse...
White
2012 Penfolds Chardonnay Bin 311 Australia, South Eastern
Lemon, slightly saline, a little earthy spice and chalky minerality. Juicy, medium plus intensity acidity, lemon, tangy, slight texture on the mid palate, simple, fresh, still showing young. nice.
White
2012 Pierro Chardonnay Margaret River Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
Oak, butter, peach, struck match; almost bacon fat. it lacks acidity after the tumbarumba offering, fruit is beginning to fade a touch; still some peach and almost pineapple drops, butter, a little oak. Hmm.
White
2012 M. Chapoutier Hermitage Blanc Chante-Alouette France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
Medium minus intensity aromas of faded peach and apricot, slight almond meal, almost a tiny touch of kerosene, a little honey and alcohol warmth on the nose. On the palate it's honeyed, almond meal, waxy textured, a little bitter on the finish with a tiny touch of alcoholic warmth. Long. Hmm. It feels a little closed to me.

White
2012 Johanneshof Gewürztraminer New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
Massive lychee backed by equally plentiful rose petal and rose water, very turkish delight. a little white pepper and, with time in the glass, a little meaty note as well as a touch of orange marmalade (slight botrytis?). In the mouth it's surprisingly juicy with fresh acidity, textured rich lychee and rose, long with a tiny touch of bitterness on the finish. Wow. balanced and rather lovely. A huge suprise.
Red
2012 Courabyra Pinot Noir 805 Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Tumbarumba
Slightly ashy, very whole bunch, red over blackberry fruit, slight cedar, savoury spice, slight earthy and meaty underpin. Juicy, a little sour blackberry, ashy as well, softly textured tannic burr grips the mid palate, a little peppery alcohol on the finish. I think the whole bunch is a bit too much for this wine...
Red
2011 Château Laroche Joubert France, Bordeaux, Côtes de Bourg
a little Brett, plums, funky, meaty, cedar, liquorice, spicy...some of those more stinky elements blow off with time and allow some ripe plum to show through. Juicy, medium plus intensity acidity, wet plums, brett, spicy, drying tannins are chalky and grainy, alcohol is a little intrusive on the finish.
Red
1998 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Earthy, funky, wet, gamey, baked spices, garrigue, leather, with time some blackberry and (think Grenache) red berries show through. Juicy, spicy, alcohol heat, plenty of tannins still, baked fruits are medium minus intensity flavour. Liquorice as well. Has potential to age further. Grenache notes grow with time s well. Long.

Red
1995 Howard Park Cabernet Merlot Australia, Western Australia
From magnum. Baked blackcurrants and berries with a plummy underpin, earth, leather and slightly oxidised. Jammy fruit but savoury with leathery, grainy tannins that dry out the mid palate. For me it's very 'aged, overripe, over extracted Australian Cabernet'.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2009 Keith Tulloch Sémillon Botrytis Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
Toffee, almost a touch of lanolin (?), baked apricots, burnt orange marmalade. Juicy in a citric way but also jammy, the sweetness is too much for the acid and it's very forward for an 11 year old under screwcap. with pudding it does start to show a little more balance but it's quite sweet with a sweet thing rather than an impression of balance. Hmm.
Red
2001 Torbreck Descendant Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Initially gamey, slightly oxidised then toast, coffee, black pepper and spiced blackberry, leather, earth. Juicy, savoury, blackberry, black pepper, black tea, softly tannic. Pleasing.
Red
2017 Torbreck Descendant Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Young, pretty black berry, a little spice, perfumed as well, floral top notes. Juicy, slightly concentrated savoury blackberry, alcohol is a little aggressive but it feels as if there is a pursuit of elegance which I find deeply pleasing, and is to be applauded.

Closing

A lot of fun, the Johanneshof Gewurz was shockingly good - perhaps a lucky bottle as it was under cork, the Bin 311 was super fresh despite it's 8 years - when screwcap works it really works...of the reds the Beaucastel was a clear head above the nearest rival but the two Torbrecks right at the end were enjoyable as well...
