Introduction

This was a great comparison of the depth of Serralunga vs the Perfume and elegance of Castiglione. Except for the flawed wines, this was a great showing of some of the best expressions in the Crus

Flight 1 (12 notes)

White - Sparkling
2008 Dom Pérignon Champagne France, Champagne
93 points
Nose: The nose is perfumed and fresh with quince, red apples, peaches, pears, vanilla, yellow flowers, brioche, bread, and fresh pastry tones. There is excellent depth and elegance with an open-knit take.

Taste: The feel is Medium bodied with racy, high acidity. The feel is extremely poised and elegant with quince, red apples, pears, yellow flowers, vanilla, brioche, bread, and fresh pastry tones.

Overall: This is clearly young, but it is also extremely good. This has an expressive and balanced side already that will only increase and get better with age.

White - Sparkling
2008 Delamotte Champagne Blanc de Blancs Millésimé France, Champagne
91 points
Nose: The nose is pristine and focused with pears, green apples, white peaches, acacia flowers, mint, almonds, crushed rocks, saline, warm dough, and biscuit notes. There is good complexity, but this lacks some depth that would kick it into another gear.

Taste: The feel is medium bodied with racy, high acidity. The feel is beautifully balanced and poised with pears, green apples, white peaches, mint, acacica flowers, almonds, saline, biscuits, and warm dough.

Overall: This is a lovely Blanc de Blancs. It shows off more of the pristine side of chardonnay as there was a good amount of salinity on both the nose and palate.

White - Sparkling
2008 Pierre Péters Champagne Grand Cru Cuvée Speciale Blanc de Blancs Les Chetillons France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
94 points
Nose: This nose is completely alive and deep with peaches, jasmine, acacia flowers, pears, apples, quince, custard, fresh ginger, mint, crushed rocks, warm dough, and some biscuit tones.

Taste: The feel is medium bodied with mouthwatering, high acidity. The acidity has some real punch still while the palate is refined and deep with peaches, pears, apples, quince, custard, mint, jasmine, acacia flowers, crushed rocks, warm dough, and biscuits.

Overall: This is starting to show where it will go. It took a bit to uncoil, but it was a real beauty while being expressive and elegant.

2000 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
94 points
Nose: There is a great amount of perfume and depth right away with strawberries, red cherries, raspberries, black tea, licorice, spice notes, smoke, earth, tobacco, tar, rose petals, and wild flowers. The nose is enveloping and has kicked into that next gear as it has more of an ethereal quality right now.

Taste: The feel is Medium bodied with tart, high acidity and silky, high tannins. The structure is starting to pull back and let the feel shine as it's silky and refined with strawberries, red cherries, raspberries, spice notes, smoke, tobacco, black tea, earth, tobacco, rose petals, and a lot of wild flowers on the finish.

Overall: This has entered the awesome phase of its life. There is an immense amount of perfume and depth that shows off a lot of red fruits with the tertiary notes starting to emerge, but they don't dominate. This is right in that zone and is drinking beautifully.

flawed
this was sadly off. It was stewed with a bunch of soy

flawed
booooooo, corked
Red
2001 Paolo Scavino Barolo Cannubi Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
91 points
Nose: The nose is lifted and balanced with dark red cherries, raspberries, licorice, spice tones, tobacco, leather, roses, earth, and some cedar notes. There is a quiet intensity with the oak still showing an imprint and it is lacking some depth.

Taste: The feel is Medium/full bodied with well-integrated, high acidity and silky, high tannins. The feel is refined and poised with the structure starting to take a back seat backed up by tones of dark red cherries, raspberries, spice tones, licorice, tobacco, roses, earth, and leather tones.

Overall: This shows off the modern touch of Scavino at a time when they were pretty amped up. The oak has mostly integrated, but it's still present. The nose and feel were expressive, but they both lacked some depth and the oak was a bit of a distraction.

2001 Guido Porro Barolo Vigna Lazzairasco Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Nose: The nose is wide open and savory with raspberries, dark red cherries, cranberries, licorice, spice notes, earth, tar, tobacco, roasted herbs, and violets. There is excellent depth with an understated power behind it all.

Taste: The feel is Medium/full bodied with well-integrated, high acidity and silky, high tannins. The structure has mostly pulled back and is now in a mature phase with raspberries, dark red cherries, licorice, earth, tobacco, tar, spice notes, and roasted herbs.

Overall: This is drinking beautifully right now. It shows off a real savory quality with good depth and balance.

2001 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto di Serralunga d'Alba Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Nose: Oh wow, this is something special immediately as my nose gets near the glass. So much depth and expression with strawberries, red cherries, raspberries, cranberries, licorice, rose petals, tobacco, leather, roasted herbs, and spice notes with a touch of tar.

Taste: The feel is full bodied with mouthwatering, high acidity and silky, high tannins. The tannins are still very much there, but they are receding a bit and revealing a light-heavyweight of a feel with strawberries, red cherries, raspberries, licorice, rose petals, tobacco, leather, and roasted herbs.

Overall: This is a knockout of a Barolo. It is showing off all of the hallmarks that comes with aging as this has hit that next level. There is so much depth and elegance with an understated power that is immensely enjoyable.

Nose: The nose is perfumed and layered with red cherries, raspberries, fresh picked berries, red fruits, licorice, spice notes, tobacco, leather, tar, black tea, earth, violets, wild flowers, and rose petals. There is a real feminine side to the nose that is elegant and lovely.

Taste: The feel is Medium/full bodied with tart, high acidity and silky, high tannins. The tannins still have some punch to them, but they aren't at the forefront. The feel carries through the femininity of the nose with red cherries, raspberries, red fruits, tobacco, leather, licorice, tar, black tea, violets, and a lot of rose petals.

Overall: This is getting ready to get amazing. The nose is an absolute delight with a whole lot of perfume, elegance, and depth. The feel is almost there but this is extremely good right now and could use maybe another 2-3 years just to kick it into that final gear for a while to come.

Nose: This nose was like taking a bunch of mushrooms and all of a sudden they just turn on. There is all sorts happening on the nose as it fills up the glass with raspberries, dark red cherries, red fruits, dust tones, savory herbs, licorice, wild flowers, rose petals, violets, and tar. This is a stunning nose with loads of depth and elegance.

Taste: The feel is Medium/full bodied with crisp, high acidity and silky, high tannins. There is a lot of refinement and poise to the feel with raspberries, dark red cherries, red fruits, dust, savory herbs, licorice, wild flowers, and violets.

Overall: This is in a wonderful place right now. The red fruits are vibrant and engulfing with loads of depth and class. This needed the better part of a few hours of air, but it showed wonderfully.

2004 Cavallotto Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Nose: There was a bit of VA on the nose that never fully went away. But, once it came better into balance with some air it showed off lovely tones of dark red cherries, black raspberries, licorice, dark red fruits, spice tones, roasted herbs, earth notes, tobacco, and some tar.

Taste: The feel is Medium/full bodied with tart, high acidity and fine grained, high tannins. The structure has started to recede with the feel showing off dark red cherries, black raspberries, licorice, dark red fruits, spice tones, roasted herbs, tobacco, and a touch of tar.

Overall: The feel wasn't as disjointed as the nose was at first thankfully. This bottle wasn't fully flawed, but I don't think this was at its best either. Still, this showed pretty well given all of that with dark red fruits and a delicious savory side.
