Introduction

Met up with the usual crowd to try a phew random bits and pieces culled from everyones cellars...

Flight 1 (10 notes)

Red - Sparkling
1986 Seppelt Shiraz Show Sparkling Great Western Australia, Victoria, Western Victoria, Great Western
Farmyard funk, bit of Brett perhaps? A litte dusty note, blackberry tends to concentrate, a touch of chalky minerality. The mousse is just about present. The wine is off dry, similar fruit quality, the Brett less prevalent though there is plenty of drying tannic burr here as well. Alcohol warmth is very present on the back of the palate
White
2010 Domaine des Baumard Savennières Clos du Papillon France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières
Chalky minerality, kerosene, lime over lemon. Medium plus intensity acidity with a touch of softness to the citrus fruit (smidge of residual sugar?) and there is some alclohol warmth on the finish as well as a touch of bitterness. Hmm.
White
2015 Fondo Antico Grillo Sicilia Parlante Italy, Sicily, Sicilia
Green herby notes, touches of grapefruit and greengages, slight smokey. On the palate the wine has medium plus intensity acidity, similar flavour profile. There is slight alcohol warmty on the finish. Perfectly pleasant but that alcohol is off putting...
White
2016 Clearview Estate Chardonnay Reserve New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay
Struck match, a little candy floss, good quality oak, a little bacon fat, stone fruit over contained citrus, a little butter on the nose. It's juicy with medium plus intensity acidity, lemon and apple over peachy stone fruit, textured mid palate. Nice in a big way - might need a year or two to come into itself..
Red
1993 Mount Mary Cabernets Quintet Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
Aromas of leather, slightly funky/bretty notes, red currant, pyrazine, gamey, slight pepper notes to the savoury spice. Earthy. in the mouth it's sourly juicy with red currant fruit, leather, drying talc textured tannins, an odd combination of green herbaceous qualities and alcohol warmth. Ugh.
Red
2012 Château Magnan-Figeac France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Plums, slight herbaceous notes, red berries, aniseed and a slightly sickly sweet jubey fruit note with a caramel underpin that I've not noticed before with this wine. Juicy acidity, savoury plums, aniseed on the palate as well, talc textured tannins. Hmm. Not as good as I remember this.
Red
2016 Château Fourcas Dupré France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Listrac-Médoc
Blackcurrant, plums, sweet spcie, cedar, cocoa powder on the nose. In the mouth the wine has juicy, medium plus intensity acidity, chalky , chewy tannins wild blackcurrant with touches of red plum. A bit more 'together' than previous tastings though still very young. Okay.

Red
1998 Penfolds Shiraz Bin 28 Kalimna Australia, South Australia
Vanilla, concentrated jammy blackberry, cream, leather, sweet spice, alcohol warmth and caramel on the nose. The palate is very much a reflection of this. Dark, concentrated, jammy black fruits, tight, silky, talc textured tannins. Alcohol warmth lends length and peppery spice. With time a touch of volatility starts to show on the nose and mouth. Not for me today (though previous experience tells me that this could well change tomorrow)
Red
2009 Craggy Range Syrah Le Sol Gimblett Gravels Vineyard New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay, Gimblett Gravels
Blackberry that proves to be almost overripe but the wine also still has touches of black pepper. Backing this are slightly oxidised notes, a little leather, cedar, liquorice and some alcohol warmth. In the mouth it's sourly juicy, peppery spice, blackberry fruit, plenty of alcohol warmth and chewy, chalky tannins. Despite 11 years on the clock it's still a complete beast. Hmm. Time?

Red - Fortified
1986 Mount Pleasant Wines Vintage Port Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
Minty with earth, liquorice, gamey notes, plenty of peppery spice, spiritous alcohol, leather, slightly jammy blackberry fruit supports this on the nose. In the mouth there is juicy acidity, liquorice, blackberry (it's very fruit) softly tannic burr, alcohol warmth is nicely handled and in balance. Perfectly pleasant if not, oddly for it's age, a little bland.

Closing

Bit of a funny night for me. I think I was expecting a lot more from the line up. than I actually got which was deeply disappointing. Ho hum.
