Introduction

Five us got together to drink a few nice bottles. David generously hosted the event at his backyard. The weather was absolutely magnificent and the wines showed very nicely.

Flight 1 - Champagne (3 notes)

The 02 CDC was exceptional once again.

White - Sparkling
2000 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
94 points
Beautifully mature nose displaying ripe yellow fruit, baked apple, honey, cinnamon, sweet spices and limestone. Fully integrated palate, medium concentrated yellow fruit, fine medium abundant mousse, medium acidity and strong limestone mineral, and a medium to long ripe yellow fruit driven finish with cedar and limestone at the end. This is more mature and less concentrated than the 02. It is really delicious.

White - Sparkling
2002 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne

Almost identical showing to the last bottle. The color is lighter than the 00. Expressive youthful nose displaying generous pure white and yellow fruit, granny smith, pear, lemon curd, honeysuckle, once again showing noticeable spearmint, cool mountain stream and limestone. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of generous sweet yellow and white fruit, very fine generous mousse, rich and generous but also focused and precise, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long generous pure yellow and white fruit driven finish with mint and honeysuckle at the end. As much as I enjoy the 00, this is purer and fresher. This remains incredibly fresh, absolute joy!

White - Sparkling
1988 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
96 points
The color is light amber and cloudy so initially worrisome. Fully mature nose displaying very ripe yellow and red fruit, tarte tatin, apricot, a hint of red currant, honey, light caramel, nutmeg and cinnamon, toffee, sourdough, smoke and limestone. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of decadent yellow fruit, rich and sweet yet also showing good balance and hamony, bright acidity and mineral, and a long sweet yellow fruit driven finish with caramel at the end. With air, it freshens up which reminds me an old Grave from the 40s. This is no sign of Madeira. Although it is more advanced than the previous few bottles, it is incredibly complex. Not for everyone but I love it.

Flight 2 - Raveneau (2 notes)

White
2010 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
97 points
Expressive youthful nose displaying opulent yet pure yellow fruit with a hint of white, fresh apple juice, lemon oil, honeysuckle, beeswax, cool mountain stream, steel, saline, spicy spices and limestone. Perfectly integrated palate, finely layered pure sweet yellow fruit, rich and generous yet also focused and precise, bright acidity and strong limestone mineral, and a long concentrated pure yellow fruit driven finish with beeswax and honeysuckle at the end. Although Raveneau Chablis lack the finesse of top Chevalier Montrachets, I find them equally enjoyable, magically combining richness and opulence with exceptional precision and focus. This is so darn delicious, kinda wine that I can drink all day!
White
2015 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
95 points
Slightly coiled nose displaying pure white fruit, pear, apple, a hint of lemon curd, honeysuckle, rainwater, a hint of mint, spicy spices and limestone. Very focused palate, slightly coiled pure sweet white fruit, cool and precise, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long pure white fruit driven finish with honeysuckle and saline at the end. Upon release, a Raveneau from a ripe vintage like 2009, 2010 and 2012 can be a bit cloying, expressing a hint of tropical fruits like pineapple. With a few years of cellaring, it becomes fresher and more precise. This is no exception as it has gained precision and focus only from a year ago. However, it is now slightly leaner and needs a couple more years to gain weight back and become like the 10.

Flight 3 - Burgundy (3 notes)

Red
1978 La Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Bousse d'Or France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
96 points
Fully mature color with brown rim. Absolutely gorgeous nose displaying slightly dry cherry fruit, a hint of blackberry, brown sugar, licorice, soy, rose, black truffle, sous bois, leather, dark spices and earth. Fully integrated palate, subtle yet sweet and decadent red fruit, silky and fluid, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, mostly resolved tannins and a medium to long sweet slightly dry fruit driven finish with rose and dark spices at the end. The has reached the second peak, i.e. full maturity. For my palate, 98pt nose but 93pt palate. A great treat as I love the fully mature expression in Burgundy.

Red
1993 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
92 points
RV mentions a hint of TCA. Not terribly expressive nose that is dominated by cedar, also concentrated black and red fruit, blackberry, raspberry, a hint of leather, dark spices and earth. Very good concentrated, coiled black and red fruit, good acidity, earthy mineral, still showing noticeable tannins and a medium long concentrated black fruit driven finish with cedar at the end. I don’t detect any TCA but not terribly expressive. I am a big of the recent M. Gibourg wines but the 90s wines are not at the same level.

Red
2001 Domaine Leroy Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
95 points
Expressive nose displaying opulent red and black fruit, blackberry pie, stewed tomato, a hint of stem, Vosne spice, caramel, black truffle, sap, espresso, cedar, iron, sweet spices and earth. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of ripe black fruit, rich and opulent yet also showing nice balance and harmony, medium acidity, earthy mineral, a hint of tannins and a long generous sweet black fruit driven finish with stewed tomato and soy at the end. It displays the strong producer style. This is drinking beautifully but there is no way to justify the current price.

Flight 4 - Piedmont (2 notes)

Red
1989 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
97 points
Expressive nose displaying very ripe concentrated black fruit with a hint of red, black cherry, blackberry pie, dry cherry, fruitcake, licorice, rose, iron, balsamico, dark spices and earth. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated red and black fruit, rich and unctuous, bright acidity, earthy mineral, still showing noticeable tannins and a long concentrated black fruit driven finish with licorice and lather at the end. This remains very youthful and can improve for another decade or two as there is so much fruit.

Red
1989 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Riserva Santo Stefano Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
94 points
Medium expressive nose dominated by iron, also sweet red fruit, strawberry jam, a hint of cherry, cedar, leather, cinnamon and iron mineral. Fully integrated palate, finely layered slightly coiled red fruit, silky and polished, bright acidity and iron mineral, still showing significant tannins, and a medium to long slightly dry sweet red fruit driven finish with iron at the end. This was decanted ahead. This may be a blasphemy for some but I prefer only a splash decanting for the 89 Giacosa wines. As Eric Guido observed, the 89 Giacosa SSR losses fruit with air. I prefer to enjoy fruit than mineral so it is a matter of personal preference. Everyone prefers the 89 Monprivato.

Flight 5 - Climens (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2003 Château Climens France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac
96 points
Very youthful color. Expressive nose displaying opulent yellow fruit, apricot tart, peach, a hint of pineapple, honey, botrytis, candied ginger, crème caramel, spicy spices and mineral. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of opulent yellow fruit, rich and unctuous, good acidity and medium mineral and a long intense yellow fruit driven finish with spicy spices at the end. Although intense and dense, this doesn’t show any overripe character. I think the balance will improve even further with time as the fruit subsides further. Highly recommend.
