Introduction

A small gathering of some of the Friday group got together for another tasting. Wines are arranged randomly but we attempt to get light to heavy. Is flight is tasted and unveiled prior to moving on to the next flight.

Flight 1 - Warm ups (2 notes)

White
2018 Eighty Four Wines Albariño USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
90 points
Double blind. Medium straw yellow color. Orchard fruit notes with a hint of something tropical in the background. Nice fruit on the palate as well, with noticeable underlying acidity. I think most guesses, including mine, were domestic chardonnay. (R&R)
White
2019 Bedrock Wine Co. Cuvée Karatas USA, California, Sonoma County
92 points
Double blind. Slightly deeper color than the first wine, with noticeable spice and floral elelments in the bouquet, along with quince and pear. Much of the same on the palate. Good acidity and balance. I preferred this to the first, and thought it was a domestic Rhone blend. Excellent. (R&R)

Flight 2 - Reds (4 notes)

Red
2009 Louis Jadot Corton-Pougets Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
88 points
Double blind. Light color. Subtle and understated, it took some time in the glass for this to open and show its fruit. Cherry and red berry notes. On the lighter side of medium-bodied, with flavors of cherry and mineral. Good fruit and acid balance. Guessed Burgundy, but was surprised when this was unveiled as this appeared much older. Still quite nice though, 88-89 pts. (R&R)

I set aside a small pour and this gained weight and nuance. I would hold this for a few years yet, say 2025+.

Red
1998 Domaine Boursot Père et Fils Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées Vieilles Vignes Reserve Cuvée Unique France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
90 points
Blind. Red berry fruit, forest floor, hints of leather- rustic. Medium-bodied. Better palate than the bouquet suggests. Lovely mature red fruit. You could have conginced me that this was either an older syrah or older pinot, and definitely not Chambolle, soI did not pick this out as our bottle.

While not what I expect from Chambolle, this is still a nice mature wine in its own right. This hadbeen double decanted off its sediment just shy of three hours before the flight was poured.
Red
1992 Freemark Abbey Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
Blind. Dark crimson color. Opens with a nice herbal quality over dark fruit, adding mint and licorice notes as it sits in the glass. Black fruit dominates the palate, with just the slightest bit of tannin holding the fruit. Finishes with good length.

This had been double decanted off its sediment about three hours before the flight was poured.
Red
1978 Domaine Chante Cigale Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
90 points
Double blind. Older, showing a slight brownish color. Tea and cherry notes with white currant elements later on. More fruit comes forward as this sits, turning towards red berry. Adds notes of earth and meaty bacon tones. Finishes with good length. Guessed old Cote Rotie. 90-91 pts. (J&J)

Flight 3 - Reds (4 notes)

Red
2000 Château Pontet-Canet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
90 points
Double blind. Dark color. Opens with a hint of rhubarb followed by macerated red berry and herb, turning to black fruit and cassis with air. Adds a subtle earthy note as well. Full-bodied with good underlying acidity. Dark fruit palate. At no point did this really strike me as Bordeaux so I was surprised when this was unveiled. Needs time, as do most of the 2000 Bordeaux. Hold to 2025+. (J&J)
