Flight 1 (10 notes)

White
2007 Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
92 points
Tasted blind. The wine showed up late, palate fatigued so no real guess taken.

Toasted marshmallow. Lively acidity. Super lame note but the wine was very good, age was apparent, and I just wanted to drink.
White
2017 Domaine Borgeot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
92 points
Tasted blind. Correctly identified as Chardonnay (Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chenevottes)

Rich, intense nose of butterscotch and pear. Zesty acids, great length and depth of fruit. Primary, needs some time to show its quality.
White
2017 Didier Dagueneau Blanc Fumé de Pouilly France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Pouilly-Fumé
94 points
Tasted blind. Correctly identified as Sauvignon Blanc (Pouilly-Fume).

Dry; intense concentration on the nose, subtle smokiness. More moderate in intensity than New Zealand. Insane acidity; tight flavors of gooseberry, citrus leaf, lemon zest, and lime peel. Lip smacking, amazingly lengthy finish.
White
2014 Eric Morgat Savennières Fides France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières
91 points
Tasted blind. Correctly identified as Chenin Blanc (Savennieres)

Nose shows some oak and yeasty notes, specifically a slight buttercream. Less acidity than expected, perhaps at its peak. Slightly viscous with lanolin, peach, and apple extending into the long finish (which was the best part for me). An awkward wine.
White
2013 Domaine Georges Vernay Condrieu Les Terrasses de l'Empire France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu
92 points
Tasted blind. Correctly identified as Condrieu

Advanced medium gold color. Aromatic flavors of lychee, apricot marmalade, melon, peach, and white flowers. Perfumed musk on the palate with some chamomile tea and pickled ginger. Lower acid and perhaps a small perception of sweetness. Outstanding, yet suspect this is a year or two past its best.
White
2017 Michel Autran Ciel Rouge France, Vin de France
89 points
Tasted blind. Incorrectly identified as Chablis.

Paint, this wine smells of fresh, wet paint. Which is definitely hard to get past once you have that set in your head. The palate is quite different, showing crisp acidity, lemon curd, melon, sourdough, ginger, and a sea-shell/oyster shell angle.
Rosé
2020 Domaine des Grillemonts Saumur France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur
89 points
Tasted blind. Incorrectly identified as a Provence rosê.

Crisp strawberry and cherry flavors, herbs, minerally, slightly floral and spicey. Bright acidity with a very dry finish.
White
2018 Maison les Alexandrins Viognier France, Vin de France
86 points
Taste blind. Correctly identified as VdP Viognier.

Easy drinking, low acid with a fair amount of honeysuckle, white flowers, lemon meringue, buttercream, and vanilla on the sweet palate. More weight than a quality Viognier. Tastes kind of manipulated.
White
2019 Château Lamothe de Haux Blanc France, Bordeaux
88 points
Tasted blind. Incorrectly identified as Sauvignon Blanc.

Relatively clear wine (compared to the rest of the tasting), indicating varietal and lack of oak. Clean, steely taste and flavors of gooseberry, pea, green bell pepper, and minerality. Crisp acids.

White
2018 La Petite Metairie #ONO Chenin Blanc-Chardonnay France, Vin de France
90 points
Tasted blind. Incorrectly identified as Chardonnay (Macon Village)

Rich, forward flavors of pear, peach, marzipan, chalky minerality, and lemon zest. Not very sophisticated, but quite tasty.
