Flight 1 - White Rhone (1 note)

White
2018 Domaine Yves Cuilleron Condrieu Les Chaillets France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu
90 points
(Tasted Blind) Mid lemon colour. Pronounced aromas of peach blossom, dried orange zest & hothouse apricots.
Slightly oily entry with a low-ish acidity, the flavours show creme fraiche, gentle spice, peach flesh and lots of oranges. Fairly juicy and a little creamy with a lactic edge and spiky alcohol on the finish. Quite a bright, focussed wine that is very enjoyable.

Flight 2 - Southern Rhone & Cote du Rhone (4 notes)

Red
2017 M. Chapoutier Côtes du Rhône Belleruche France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
85 points
Mid ruby
Soft aromas of raspberry, black pepper, aniseed and red cherry coulis.
A sweet, rich entry with mouth-filling fruits of raspberry and ripe Bing cherry. Not a lot of acidity, but there is a cool menthol lozenge that gives a slight confectionary note.
Medium-bodied with grainy tannins, there is some breadth to the mid-palate and a slightly salty and diesel note to the finish, which is not altogether unpleasant. A supple, relatively simple wine for immediate drinking over the next 2-3 years.
Red
2014 Domaine Jamet Côtes du Rhône France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
88 points
From northern Rhone so Syrah dominated.
Light+ crimson
Notable feral-dominated bouquet showing fresh earth, raw meat, animal, smoke alongside peppercorns and dark fruit.
A sharp acidity yet sappy juiciness to the wine, there is clear stem inclusion. There is a savoury gloss to the flavours with spice and white pepper. A fresh, exciting wine with more suppleness as it unfolds and sandpaper tannins on a medium finish.
Red
2016 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
89 points
Pale ruby red
Youthful aroma with ripe red plums, Pride of India cherries, wet earth, wild fennel, farmyard and smoked meats.
Medium-bodied with lively but juicy acidity enrobed in red cherry flesh and marinated rumtopf raspberry that sits with menthol, tar, liquorice and garrigue. The alcohol is a little spiky and weights the wine down alongside a sweetness that the acidity struggles to lift. There is also a baked feel to the finish. The tannins feel quite dense and it sort of works - the jury is out on this, as should integrate with time. To revisit as I usually love this estate!

2010 Domaine Roger Perrin Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
89 points
Medium to deep garnet with mahogany edges.
Lifted expansive bouquet of wet earth, flea collar, chinese 5 spice, umami, eucalypt, underbrush and baked fruit.
Medium bodied, Grenache driven blend that shows a gentle extract, supple texture with sweet oak notes. Wonderul concentration of flavour, generous alcohol with a dense yet powdery tannin. This is an enjoyable wine with medium acidity that is well made and as it sits in the glass reveals notes of pepper, leather, furniture polish, liquorice, and some juicy fruits.

Flight 3 - Northern Rhone (4 notes)

2017 M. Chapoutier Crozes-Hermitage Les Meysonniers France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage

(Tasted hurriedly) Deep purple-violet
Lifted aromas of black cherry, smoke, lavender, ground black pepper and spices.
This is a well-defined wine, bright acidity, more linear than broad with firm, chewy tannins and a long finish. Good depth of flavour, with black cherry and blackberry and smoke.
Red
2015 Domaine Yves Cuilleron Cornas Lieu-Dit Les Côtes France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
93 points
Deep purple. Lifted and seductive aromas of violet, cracked pepper, ripe black fruit, some marinated cherry and quite a bit of spicy oak. As opens show dark chocolate. Youthful and no stem notes to speak of.
Superb definition on the palate this is a full-bodied, powerful Cornas with excellent concentration, supple acidity and dense, austere tannins. Wonderful breadth to the mid-palate this is a big wine but has a chunkiness that works so well as the tannins do build. A fragrant lift complements blackberry, dark 90% Lindt Chocolate and fruit cake, keeping it seductive and super appealing. A long, winding finish - excellent but would benefit from more time in bottle.

Mid purple; Lifted and delicate floral aromas with garrigue, fennel, roasted meat, black pepper, raisin and mint toothpaste. Full-bodied, this is a weighty, dense wine with high extract, firm, almost austere tannins yet with balancing energetic acidity. Plenty of savoury flavours intermingle with black fruit, sweet spice, liquorice and black pepper. There is an air of refinement about the wine I enjoyed and although it will need some time for the tannins to resolve this should keep nicely over the next 5-10 years.

2013 M. Chapoutier Côte-Rôtie La Mordorée France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Mid garnet to bricking red rim
Fairly expressive nose with tertiary dominating: tilled soil, wet undergrowth, savoury notes. As the wine opens joined by violet and baked black fruits.
Broad palate structure with sappy, lively acidity and puckering tannins. There is a juiciness to the core with plenty of blackberry, spice, raspberry and a little nastergaal. It feels a little harsh and brash but is early days and the finish is long.
