Rosé

Great rose; this isn't the sort of vapid stuff that is widely available. Lacking the generic sweetness, this comes across a little more stern, with a herbal tinge and plenty of structure on the midpalate. Obviously not a profound wine, but a rose that I could actually get behind and enjoy.

I sat next to the importer/distributor, who said that this bottle was what it was supposed to be, so I'm going to take that as truth. It's certainly not the sort of wine I'm used to. Extremely oxidative, with notes of pickled mustard seeds, butterscotch, and a whole boatload of volatility and other odd chemical notes. Most at the table liked this more than I did (which, to be fair, isn't really much of a statement). Certainly interesting; I didn't know you could make grapes produce the flavours I experienced today.

From magnum (and I believe 2015 base). I think the big vintage helps a lot with these wines. It brings more weight and depth, and especially with Laval's extraordinarily lean style, the wines need as much high temperatures as they can get. Indeed this bottle does show some fruit-based sweetness here, but as with my other experiences with Laval, this thins out on the midpalate through to the finish.

Unsurprisingly the most mature of the PTs we had today. This is fully resolved and perhaps even just a hair past peak, as this seems to be just starting to pick up a slight metallic tinge. Nonetheless, there is immense complexity here, alongside a pot-pourri/drying red fruit profile. The tannins have been fully resolved and most of the flavours here are of secondary persuasion.

My favourite of the PTs today; this has got to be one of the best European 2003s I've tasted. Black fruited, sweet, and leathery, with plenty of structure and a good number of years left in the tank, I love catching this wine as it seems like its potential is just starting to crest. No signs of overripeness or roastedness; just full-blooded, damn good sangiovese.

This bottle is pure, unbridled potential. It is ripe and large-scaled, with lots of black fruit and some serious heft. It needed time in the glass to truly flourish. A muscular edition of this wine, I found it very impressive in its sheer size. The strong tannic backbone still will need plenty of time to resolve, but there is definitely enough ripe fruit here to see that come to fruition.

While this is by no means a bad wine, it didn't live up to the potential and potency of the others in the flight. This strongly reminds me of the 2008 red Burgundy vintage, with its bright red fruits and heavy perfume, but that also carries through to the relatively thin palate and high acidity. For me, this had the least potential of further aging, and revisiting this wine later on also did not yield great results.

Difficult to evaluate on account of its youth, but it's quite clear the pedigree and amount of raw material that this wine has. There's a mix of red and black here, as well as bright acidity and still plenty of structural tannins. The cherry notes here put this an a aldehydic/higher-toned register, but my guess is that that will settle down in time. I would love to revisit this wine with another decade on it.

I'm not generally a fan of Bea, as the wines are inconsistent and I can't figure out for the life of me what is what (that latter part is on me). I thought this was a good bottle though; the nose showed a darker profile with plenty of black cherries, but without any of the attendant vanillin qualities. The palate is reasonably resolved, but there seems to be enough fruit for a few more years, not to mention the tannins. A relatively nice bottle of Bea, but it's not the sort of wine that I would be very keen on chasing.
