Monday Burgundy Cellar Visits - Albert Morot, Méo-Camuzet, and Ramonet
Cote d'Or
Tasted November 8, 2021 by Burgundy Al with 263 views
Flight 1 - Albert Morot (16 notes)
Tasting with proprietor Geoffroy Choppin de Janvry
Red
2020 Albert Morot Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru La Bataillère
Barrel tasting at the domaine. All red cherry here with a rich start that is nearly jammy, then softer and more energetic rom middle-to-finish. Good for its level, 87-89 point potential.
Red
2020 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Cent-Vignes
Barrel tasting at the domaine. Ripe and slightly candied start are wonderfully tasty, supported by soft but long tannins sneaking up on you. Charming now, good young, 87-89 point potential.
Red
2020 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Les Toussaints
Barrel tasting at the domaine. Very reductive today with form tannins, so impossible to assess.
Red
2020 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Les Aigrots
Barrel tasting at the domaine. This wine is already assembled for bottling. Red and black cherry with a lighter start, then denser/ richer middle-to-finish. Good+ already now and approachable now.
Red
2020 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Bressandes
Barrel tasting at the domaine. More black vs red fruit, this is dense and burly with very good length and a bright, minerally finish. 90-91 point potential, but this will take some cellar time.
Red
2020 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Marconnets
Barrel tasting at the domaine. There was some sediment in the sample that Geoffroy pulled from the barrel, so this was tough to fairly assess. But clearly lots of density with good+ length.
Red
2020 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Teurons
Barrel tasting at the domaine. Assembled for bottling. Rich throughout with so much black and red cherry. Slightly firm middle for now that will easily harmonize in a few years. Easily the best wine of the 2020s, 91-92 point potential.

Red
2019 Albert Morot Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru La Bataillère
88 points
Tasted at the domaine. Spiced start with black berries and earthy, meaty hints. Good enough weight. Cellar at least a few more years.
Red
2019 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Cent-Vignes
87 points
Tasting at the domaine. Mostly red fruit with some meatiness, coming across on the simpler side today, but with good length, even if it comes across as foursquare today. Better to hold until at least 2024.
Red
2019 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Les Toussaints
89 points
Tasting at the domaine. Ripe start with floral notes, softer middle, firm finish. Hold until at least 2030. 88-91 point potential, based on how/ where this integrates.
Red
2019 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Les Aigrots
Tasting at the domaine. Reduction on both nose and palate, so tough to assess in the limited time of the tasting.
Red
2019 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Bressandes
Tasting at the domaine. Spiced and floral start with black and red cherry aromas, followed by similar flavors with firm and meaty character, yet well balanced. Very good length, ending with a finish backward for now. Very good potential, 90-92 points, 2029 forward.
Red
2019 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Teurons
Tasting at the domaine. Same degree of richness as Bressandes, but more forward and fleshy with silkier tannins. Maybe slightly less concentrated, but also very good overall, 91-92+ point potential.
Red
1999 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Marconnets
Served blind at the domaine from 375 ml bottle. I correctly identified this as from the late 1990s. Earthy red cherry with earth and good structure holding everything nicely in place.
White
2020 Albert Morot Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru La Bataillère Aux Vergelesses Blanc
Tasting at the domaine. Spring and summer flowers with lots of charm. Moderate density (young vines) but very bright and cheerful. Will dsrink well young, 88-90 point potential.
White
2020 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Les Aigrots Blanc
Tasting at the domaine. Bigger and more layered vs the Savigny, this is less ripe and better textured. Bright and vibrant with a mineral-flecked finish. 89-91 point potential, 2025 forward
Flight 2 - Méo-Camuzet (15 notes)
Tasting with Jean-Nicolas Méo
White
2020 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Clos Saint Philibert Blanc
Barrel tasting at domaine. Apple throughout, fun and easy. As usual, best to drink well young.
Red
2020 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Bourgogne Côte d'Or Cuvée Etienne Camuzet
Tasting at the domaine. Big and fleshy, yet charming and well balanced despite ripeness. Very good for its level, also good to enjoy young, 87-88 point potential.
Red
2020 Méo-Camuzet Frère et Sœurs Fixin
Tasting at domaine. Black fruit throughout with some gamy hints. Rich start, more rugged finish. better to cellar a few years, 86-87 point potential.
Red
2020 Méo-Camuzet Frère et Sœurs Nuits St. Georges
Tasting at the domaine. Also mostly black fruit here with some meaty notes. Also firmly tannic, but seemingly layered with elegant hints already starting to emerge. Will reward some cellar time, 89-90 point potential, 2025 forward.
Red
2020 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée
Tasting at the domaine. Much more red than black fruit with baking spice and faint meaty hints. Ripe and bold, but more layered than NSG just tasted. Will drink well young, 89-91 point potential.
Red
2020 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes
Tasting at the domaine. Bright red berry and cherry throughout, clearly ripe but balanced with good weight. Asian five spice hints add some extra character, with bright textures on medium finish that should expand with time, 90-91 point potential.
Red
2020 Méo-Camuzet Frère et Sœurs Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Tasted at the domaine. Low yields led to a combination of two 1er Crus that Jean-Nicolas said simply worked better together - Terre Blanches (in Premeaux) and Perrieres. The Premeaux character brings an approachability here that is charming, with enough tannic structure in the background. Bright, yet dense, 90-91 point potential.
Red
2020 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers
Tasting at the domaine. More red than black fruit throughout, particularly on the nose which seems bright and spiced (very Vosne-like). The palate is more structured and brooding right now, particularly in the middle. Good for its level.
Red
2020 Méo-Camuzet Frère et Sœurs Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Feusselottes
Tasting at the domaine. Red cherry and berry throughout with good enough weight, highlighted by super bright textures and an expanding finish. Very good potential with cellar time, 91-93 points. Méo-Camuzet added another small plot to the wine this year, coming from the adjacent Grands Murs 1er cru, which apparently can be called Feusselottes.
Red
2020 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Charmes-Chambertin
Tasting at the domaine. First time trying this from any vintage. Fun and ripe, not particularly "Gevrey" to me, but well balanced. Probably a good younger drinking Grand Cru. 90-91 point potential.
Red
2020 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Clos Vougeot
Tasting at the domaine. Bright red cherry and berry is nicely spiced. Sneaky power with very good length. Very balanced already. Impressive 92-93 point potential, 2028 forward.
Red
2020 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Corton-Clos Rognet
Tasting at the domaine. A step up from the wonderful Clos Vougeot for me. Glorious and alluring aromatic start already with sweet spice, black cherry, and faint meatiness. Dense on the palate, firm on the middle, very long finish. Cellar to 2030 or later., 93+ points.
Red
2020 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Echezeaux Les Rouges du Bas
Tasting at the domaine. Lots of bright red fruit throughout, seemingly approachable but with sneaky structure that stands out at the finish. Lots here, less clear how big and nuanced this will be, 90-93 point potential.
Red
2020 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux
Tasting at the domaine. A real treat. Sensational in almost every way. Bright red fruit with spice that come together in a package that is unmistakably Vosne. Brilliant textures. A great wine in the making.
Red
2020 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Richebourg
Tasting at the domaine. Bigger, fleshier, and more powerful than the brilliant Cros P, this might not be quite as perfectly harmonious right now, but might almost get there with cellar time. Also impressive 94-96 point potential.
Flight 3 - Jean-Claude Ramonet (16 notes)
White
2019 Jean-Claude Ramonet Bouzeron
87 points
Tasting at the domaine. Surprisingly fleshy for Aligoté, while bright and tense on finish. A very got Aligoté. Good now.
White
2019 Jean-Claude Ramonet Chardonnay Bourgogne
89 points
Tasting at the domaine. Lemon and apple comes across as very bright with excellent weight and length for its level.
White
2019 Jean-Claude Ramonet Pernand-Vergelesses Les Belles Filles Blanc
Tasting at the domaine. Floral and orchard fruit aromas. Starts with green apple and lemon flavors, ending with riper fruit on a long finish. Not yet fully harmonious, this wants several more years in the cellar, which is consistent with I found with the several bottles I have opened from 2017 vintage.
White
2019 Jean-Claude Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet
89 points
Tasting at the domaine. A hugely successful Village level wine. Leaner styled than I expect from a very ripe vintage, this has such bright flavors with dancing textures. Very good now.
White
2019 Jean-Claude Ramonet Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères
91 points
Tasting at the domaine. Very rich apple and pear with so much energy. Long, precise, lingering finish. Excellent village wine.
White
2019 Jean-Claude Ramonet Saint-Aubin 1er Cru En Remilly Blanc
Tasting at the domaine. Reductive today, so impossible to fairly assess in the limited time of this stand-around tasting.
White
2019 Jean-Claude Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot
90 points
Tasting at the domaine. From three distinct plots. Fat start, brighter finish with good+ weight, good length and intensity. Should also drink well young, 2023 forward.
White
2019 Jean-Claude Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vergers
92 points
Tasted at the domaine. Floral, apple and lemon on nose. Powerful throughout, this consistently seemed austere given 2019 weather, coming across as so bright and energetic into its very long, tense finish. Thrilled by the lingering finish, 92-93 point potential.
White
2019 Jean-Claude Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chaumées
93 points
Tasting at the domaine. A step up over the great Vergers, this is also floral with slightly riper fruit but equally energetic. Long finish particularly showcases more lemon and lemon curd. Still coming together, this has 92-94 point potential, better 2025 forward.
White
2019 Jean-Claude Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Ruchottes
94 points
Tasting at the domaine. A true powerhouse with incredible balance. Ripe apple and pear throughout is intense with sneaky length and seamless textures. Great already, with further upside. So exciting.

White
2019 Jean-Claude Ramonet Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet
Tasting at the domaine. Slightly reductive start, which delayed the emergence of its floral charm. Richness came through clearly, with engaging brightness. Long, lean finish. Lots here, 93-94 point potential.
White
2019 Jean-Claude Ramonet Bâtard-Montrachet
Tasting at the domaine. Bigger yet vs Bienvenues, but seemingly more integrated already now. So much ripe apple with some pear to start, then leaner and brighter middle-to-finish. So much here, yet with so much in reserve. This will be great young, but even better in a decade, 94-95 point potential.
White
2018 Jean-Claude Ramonet Montrachet
97 points
Tasting at the domaine. Apple, pear, baked apple, allspice and mint with so much more, seemingly both sweet and tart. Ripe with balance from start-to-middle, then structured and highly energetic middle-to-finish. Long, lingering finish. One of the best wines I have tasted this year.
Red
2019 Jean-Claude Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge
86 points
Tasted at the domaine. Ripe red fruit with a bit of candy, but also slightly awkward in the middle. Better to cellar a few years longer.
Red
2019 Jean-Claude Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos St. Jean Rouge
Tasted at the domaine. Noticeably reductive so impossible to fairly assess.
Red
2019 Jean-Claude Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Boudriotte Rouge
Tasted at the domaine. On the jammy side for Ramonet, but that might be 2019 coming through. Certainly fun when young, but there might be intriguing aging potential here.
