Introduction
this years opportunity to try the Guigal releases...it's expensive but it's worth it...
Flight 1 - On entry (1 note)
Canapes...
Rosé
2017 E. Guigal Côtes du Rhône Rosé
Pretty lightweight, berries, cherry. Cherry and berry on the palate, a little tight texture on the mid palate, alcohol warmth on the finish. Hmm.
Flight 2 - Bracket 1 - White (4 notes)
Tuna Carpaccio, Citrus Segments, Pine Nuts, Micro Leaves
White
2019 E. Guigal Côtes du Rhône Blanc
Initially a little apricot, with peach, slight bees wax, touches of citrus peel. Juicy, slightly bitter, apricot, stone fruit, tangy, savoury, a little mid texture grip, alcohol warmth on the finish. Hmm.
White
2017 E. Guigal St. Joseph Lieu-Dit St. Joseph Blanc
Butter, toast, rich, slight stone fruit, sweet spice, a little pastry (?), with time it get's more perfumed, floral top notes, fleshy rather than juicy, textured mid palate grip, slight alcohol warmth; more about structure than fruit but very young for me, waxy, a little cereal note. Interesting.

White
2018 E. Guigal Condrieu
Apricot, fresh, a little fresh ginger, touches of bitterness, a little orange blossom, orange and apricot, alcohol warmth is controlled, fleshy, balanced, very nice, pleasing.
White
2019 E. Guigal Condrieu La Doriane
oak, rich, butter, toast, apricot, young, polished. Juicy, fleshy, freshly acidic (for a viognier) plenty of texture and grip on the mid palate, apricot, and equally polished. Okay.
Flight 3 - Bracket 2 - Reds (4 notes)
Roasted Quail Leg, Sweet Potato, Vincotto
Red
2017 E. Guigal Côtes du Rhône
Savoury, red and blackberry, black pepper note is reinforced by the alcohol, with time a little jubey note. Juicy, fleshy, fruity, balanced, liquorice, grippy tannins, s'okay but great QPR.
Red
2018 E. Guigal Crozes-Hermitage
Slightly dusty, baked black fruits; slight alcohol warmth, tiny touches of green and black pepper. Juicy, almost slightly sour, wild blackberry with black pepper and alcohol heat which I find intrusive. Hmm.
Red
2016 E. Guigal St. Joseph
Slightly dusty, almost a smidge of taint, savoury, meaty, olives, blackberry with time. Wetly juicy, slightly sour fruit, chalky tannins are drying, it's a bit out of whack for me. Alcohol intrudes a little on the finish. Nah.
Red
2016 E. Guigal St. Joseph Lieu-Dit St. Joseph Rouge
Oak and ripe black fruit, concentrated, dense, a little black pepper. Quite spicy, worked nose. Juicy, fleshy initially with plenty of black hued fruit and oak; which lends a woody quality to the drying, slightly chalky tannins. Still quite savoury but without a doubt the 'biggest' wine in this bracket. Hmm.
Flight 4 - Bracket 3 - Posher reds with sub Hermitage vertical (6 notes)
Wagyu Beef, smoked eggplant, crispy zucchini flowers, mostarda di voghera, negroni jus
Red
2017 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Brune et Blonde
Concentrated blackberry, a little polished oak, and a little black pepper, tiny smidge of brett, cream. Concentrated blackberry & olive on the palate as well as grippy, grainy tannins close things down, the fruit just about persists, a touch of fleshiness here as well. Hmm.

Red
2016 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Château d'Ampuis
Initially wet cardboard but this blew off to show ripe and concentrated blackberry with a tiny little redcurrant note underpinning this, spicy, polished oak. Juicy, black hued fruit, polished persistent tannins, lasts forever supported by the dark fruits, long, very long, Young. Yum.
Red
2017 E. Guigal Hermitage
A little closed initially, blackberry, a little plum, sweet spice, polished oak, a little plum, chocolate. A tiny sour note here, tannins are drying, chalky, and it seems, after the Ampuis, to finish quite short (it isn't short). Hmm.
Red
2016 E. Guigal Hermitage
A little reductive, touch of farmyard, sweet spice, wild blackberry and dark fruit compote, rich, concentrated, thick dense, chewy, monstrous, years required. Woof.

Red
2015 E. Guigal Hermitage
Fresh and wet smelling initially with black and red berries, cedar...And wetly enjoyable it proves on the palate, red and black fruit, chalky, gritty tannins. Hmm. Wet vintage? Pleasing with the food.

Red
1994 E. Guigal Hermitage
Cellar stink over leather, red currant, earth, mushrooms. sourly acidic, drying grippy tannins, not much going on flavourwise. A whisper of black fruit. Not flawed but old.
Flight 5 - Bracket 4 - La las (3 notes)
A selection of cheeses...
Red
2017 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline
Fresh red and blackberry, a little fresh plum, smells juicy, a little whole bunch spiciness. And so it proves on the palate, backed by persistent, long, drying tannins, balanced, fleshy, fresh. Lovely
Red
2017 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque
Initially medium minus intensity aromas initially but opens with time to show black hued fruits; compote, earthy, spice, with time polished oak starts to show and the fruit becomes more perfumed. Juicy, savoury, quite concentrated, black fruits, tannins are talc textured persistent, proves savoury on the finish as well.
Red
2017 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Landonne
Concentrated, cedar, almost sandalwood, dense, dark fruits, sweet and savoury spice; peppery. Smells like it's going to be thick and chewy, touch of baked earth, plum almost prune. On the palate there is some fresh acidity to help things along, tannins are drying, chalky textured, chewy and persistent, fruit, unsurprisingly, is as the nose and persistent, touch of liquorice as well. Another beast.
Flight 6 - Mystery wine (1 note)
Options game...I got to sit down early...again...shame on me...
Red
2018 E. Guigal Gigondas
Served blind.
Spicy, red and blackberry fruit, jubey, a little black pepper...juicy, fleshy, generous, fresh and fleshy, softly textured.
