Domaine Maume Mazis Chambertin Tasting with Anthony Hanson MW

Institute of Directors, Pall Mall, London

Tasted March 18, 2008 by Paul D with 686 views

Introduction

Small domaine with a total of 5 hectares, about 0.7ha of which are in Mazis, of which only about 220 cases are produced each year. Relatively old fashioned wine-making here with 100% destemming, sorting in vineyard and back at domaine, 5-6 day cold soak, followed by around 15 days of vinification. Around 25% new oak used for 18-20 months, depending on the vintage.

All wines double decanted between 6 and 6.45pm, tasting started just after 7pm.

Red
2002 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
Pale/medium garnet, wide rim. Pretty red-toned fruit on the nose, slightly floral. Light/medium bodied, lovely pure red fruit, natural with a nice lingering finish, good acidity and some fine tannins. Nice and open now, will undoubtedly improve. 90ish.
Red
2001 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
Slightly deeper core than the 2002, but with some mahogany tints. Found this a little closed at first, may have been a little cold when first poured, slowly opened to reveal some nice development with florally strawberry fruit, a hint of game. Good structure here with fine acidity and a good tannic framework, should age well.

Red
1998 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
Quite deeply coloured, but unfortunately corked.
Red
1997 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
Ripe, sweet red-toned fruit on the nose, some spice but really quite youthful still. Fragrant. Similar sweet fruit on the initial attack, surprisingly decent acidity holds together a reasonable length finish. Very good - a decent effort for the year that still has some legs.

Flight 3 (2 notes)

Red
1995 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
Surprisingly dark core, medium rim. Spicy, complex nose showing slightly darker (plum?) fruit and emerging meaty notes. Slightly brooding. Good volume and density on the palate, but well proportioned with fine acidity. Quite tannic, but plenty of fruit to provide balance, still quite tight on the finish. Needs more time to give its best but should be a lovely wine in another 5 years or so.
Red
1994 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
Very developed appearance with a pale, mahogany core and wide pale rim. Attractive, sweet, evolved, slightly toffeed nose, some aged, bruised red fruit. Similar flavours on the palate, which is light, perhaps a little dilute, but certainly not unpleasant. Indeed very drinkable, although one to drink up.

Red
1993 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
Mmm, some raved about this, indeed I think it was voted wine of the night, but I am not so sure. Deep garnet core, mahogany rim. Complex, developed nose, lots of spice, some meat but also something slightly showy and OTT - indeed I found it a little raisiny. Fresher on the palate though, plenty of spice, lots of structure too, with plenty of firm tannin which slightly dominated the finish. Needs more time and although there is plenty of fruit I am not convinced this will ever really come together.
Red
1991 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
Medium/pale mahogany core, wide pale rim. At first I thought this was very slightly corked, but it seemed to blow off with time to reveal quite a lean, beefy wine with mushroom hints, with an attractive medium length savoury finish. Very good but not in the class of many others on show tonight.

Flight 5 (1 note)

Red
1989 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
Medium mahogany core, slightly darker than the 1991. Sweet, evolved, rich, ripe nose, some plum fruit, game, brown sugar. Fragrant and attractive. Deep and dense on the palate, meaty and savoury, rich but fresh with decent acidity on a lingering, savoury finish. Excellent, my second favourite wine on the night. 92-95.

Flight 6 (2 notes)

Red
1985 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
Medium mahogany core, wide rim. Lovely sweet, evolved fruit on the nose, caramel, spice. Complex, fragrant and beguiling, could sniff this all night. Lovely harmonious palate, absolutely nothing out of place, beautiful acidity, drinking superbly with a lovely freshness about it and a classy, lingering finish. Drinking beautifully but can't see why there would be any need to hurry. Fantastic wine - 95+ and my WOTN.
Red
1983 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
Very brown, tawny in fact, wide rim. Sweet nose, again slightly toffeed, light but with substance, slightly tobaccoey. Lovely sweet, singing palate, again superbly fresh, caramelly, spicy, slightly savoury meaty notes, lingering finish with some firm tannins still evident, but not overly obtrusive. Another lovely mature wine. My 3rd place overall. 91-93.

Red
1988 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
Not poured initially because from the smell emanating from the bottle Linden had thought it corked. Passed round at the end of the night it seemed fine. Lean and interesting, slightly meaty on the nose, with a savoury and zingy palate, some chalky notes and a slightly tannic signature on the finish. Not bad and certainly drinkable.
Red
1996 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
From magnum. Deeply coloured, almost ruby, but this one really very badly corked.

Closing

A lovely tasting, despite the corked bottles. Real honest, unshowy but hugely enjoyable not to mention ageworthy wines here, glad I have a few in the cellar!
