WTSO Recent Wines

Tasted March 1, 2022 - April 16, 2022 by 3daywinereview.com with 188 views

Introduction

I have been buying more wines from WTSO over the past year. They seem to be stepping up the operation and with free shiping can't go wrong.

Here is a code for $10 off $50 or more that expires on April 18. Good on anything on the site. THREEDAY-APRIL

The 2011 Clarendon Hills Sandown Cabernet is the best deal for me since the Davenport Cellars deal of the decade a few years back. $27.99 is stealing on how good it is and WA gave it 86 point which is even better.

Flight 1 (12 notes)

Red
2016 Bodegas Salentein Malbec Single Vineyard La Pampa Argentina, Mendoza, Valle de Uco
91 points
Day 1: Very elegant Malbec. Blueberries, mild spices, pepper, sour cherry and minerals. This is a easy drinking wine but enjoyable. Shorter to medium finish. (natural cork) 90 points
Day 2: Opening up more. While a more subtle style Malbec it offers more punch on day 2 with bright fruit, minerals, underbrush, dust, coco, and dried blueberries. Medium finish. 91 points
Day 3: For sure not high octane Malbec and I like this style. Small berries, minerals, dust, dried fruits, strawberry and floral notes. Medium finish and good acidity. 91 points
Recommendation: This is an easy drinking Malbec that is interesting enough. Should drink well through 2030.
Red
2011 Clarendon Hills Syrah Moritz Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Clarendon
92 points
Day 1: WTSO $36.99. Classic Clarendon Hills Syrah on the pop and pour. Not a powerhouse which I like. Roasted meats, gravel, white pepper, mild spice and red currants. Medium finish. Finish is a little weak and really the only flaw on the wine. Good value. 91 points
Day 1.25: Coming together and better with black olives, white pepper, gravel, spice and red currants. Not a powerhouse but very enjoyable. 92 points
Day 2: Time is not this wine's friend. Pretty boring wine on day 2 and almost flat. 81 points
Day 2.5: Again don't give up. Elegant with red currants, roasted meat, black pepper, gravel and minerals. Nice earth tones on the finish. Not a fruit bomb and good expression of Shiraz. 92 points
Day 2 End of the Day: Figure with 10 years drink it up. Not as good as 2.5 but solid.
Recommendation: These will age for a few more years but consume probably on day 1 for maximum enjoyment.

2011 Clarendon Hills Grenache Kangarilla Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Clarendon
87 points
Day 1: Glass vs. Glass Riedel Somm Restaurant Series vs. Glasvin Universal.
Riedel Somm: Paint thinner, ripe raspberries, spice, underbrush and violets. Short to medium finish. Certainly not a legendary Clarendon Hills wine. 87 points
Glasvin Universal: Hardly anything on the nose. Some floral. On the palate this brings out the heat and spice which is consistent on previous wines. Weak finish. 83 points
After day 1 the wine is not good and certainly not a good value but not sure what the appeal of the Glasvin is.
Day 2: Slightly oxidized on day 2. Still has that paint thinner nose along with some floral and underbrush. Lacks fruit on day 2. 81 points
Recommendation: Don't Buy! This is not a well made wine. Enjoy a Cotes du Rhone for half the price.
Day 2: Glasvin. Much better on the nose and nice spices, raspberries, floral and earth. Finish is a bit water downed but drinkable out of this glass. Much better on day 2. Glasvin. 86 points

2011 Clarendon Hills Cabernet Sauvignon Sandown Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Clarendon
94 points
Day 1: Every now and then you get a wine that is polarizing and this is it. Dark purple and perfect cork. The funk on this wine is off the charts in a good way. Funk, blueberries, cigar, spice, minerals, dust, rose petals and pepper. The concentration on the finish is dense. Medium plus finish and nice acidity. This is my new favorite wine of the year. 94 points
Day 2: Most anticipated day 2 experience of the year. It is again outstanding while a bit different. The amazing funk nose and palate has soften but this wine now reveals: Blueberries, minerals, dark chocolate, tar, spice, black pepper and forest floor. Picks up some menthol on this concentrated medium plus finish. Equally as good and hard to save any for day 3 but I will. 94 points.
Day 3: Wow still great and an experience. Dark chocolate, dust, earth, black pepper, blue currants, cigar and tar. Flavorful to the max and balanced wine. Medium to long finish. Outstanding. 94+ points
Recommendation: This is my wine of the year so far and for $27.99 at WTSO you can't go wrong.

THREEDAY-APRIL code that will work through April 18 on any wines on the site. $10 off $50 or more.

2009 Clarendon Hills Grenache Clarendon Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Clarendon
92 points
Day 1: Bright fruit and flavorful. Raspberries, strawberry and blackberries. Mild spice, minerals and fresh roasted coffee beans. Medium plus finish. Super tasty wine without the over the top alcohol. Highly recommended. (Natural cork) 92 points
Day 2: Holding form and has some life left in the cellar. Strawberry and raspberry dominate in the fruit category along with bramble, spice, minerals and coffee beans. Picks up a little roasted meat on the finish. Medium plus and a steal of a value at $24.99 with free shipping from WTSO. 92 points
Recommendation: Buy it!

2018 Kay Brothers Shiraz Hillside Amery Vineyards Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
92 points
Day 1: One hour in the glass and this is opening up and revealing amazing fruit featuring boysenberry, mulberries and ripe plums. Nice acidity overall along with black pepper, scorched earth and dark coco. Concentrated wine but drinking well young. 92 points
Day 2: Little less intense than day 1 but equally enjoyable. Mulberries and boysenberry. Cracked black pepper, spice, crushed rock, violets and dust. Not your over the top Aussie Shiraz. 14.5% alcohol. A nice value overall. 92 points
Recommendation: A solid buy at $32.99 with free shipping from WTSO.

2019 Raymond Cabernet Sauvignon District Collection Yountville USA, California, Napa Valley, Yountville
92 points
Day 1: Getting ready for the WTSO Raymond Tasting at WTSO. Very nice wine featuring bell peppers, raspberries, graphite, red berries, spice, floral and black licorice. Complex wine and medium plus finish. It is great on a pop and pour and will revisit over 3 days. (Natural cork) 92 points
Day 2: Bell pepper, spice, floral, raspberries, sour cherry, blueberries and floral notes. Certainly not an in your face type Cabernet. Holding to form on day 2. 92 points
Day 3: Less intense on the bell pepper and offers more robust fruit featuring blueberries, cherries and plum. Nice spice and graphite note. Medium plus finish. This is a solid wine. 92+ points
Recommendation: Very good value from WTSO for under $50.

2019 Raymond Cabernet Sauvignon District Collection Atlas Peak USA, California, Napa Valley, Atlas Peak
91 points
Day 1: Getting ready for the WTSO Raymond tasting this Thursday. On initial pour oak overload. Yes that blew off to reveal a much better wine which is wine all young wines need to be decanted. Cherry, oak, vanilla, spices, bitter chocolate and plum. Full bodied effort but dry in style. Still tannic and young. A lot of potential here and a very good value at $50.00. (Natural cork) 90-93 points.
Day 2: No surprise that a young Napa Cabernet is better on day 2. Still showing some oak but the other flavors are more present featuring blueberries, saw dust, cherry, vanilla, bitter chocolate and spices. Medium plus finish and good acidity. Solid wine. 91 points
Day 3: Oak, tannic, cherry, plum, spices, and bitter chocolate. For sure cellar this wine for 3 to 5 years.
Recommendation: You will be rewarded by opening this in 2026 or later.

White - Sweet/Dessert
2009 Château d'Arche Sauternes France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
92 points
Day 1: Just got this shipment on Wednesday and wanted to try a bottle before the sale ends on WTSO. This is a solid Sauternes for the money. Nothing off the charts but $24.99 worth a three pack. Apricots, honey suckles, minerals, sour apple and melon. Good acidity and love the half bottle as most of my off lines by design are six or less. 92 points

2011 Clarendon Hills Cabernet Sauvignon Sandown Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Clarendon
94 points
Day 1: The first bottle was off the charts. This bottle is a completely different experience but equally likeable. Cassis, minerals, stone, roasted chestnuts, spice, blueberries and graphite. Kind of a hybrid between Bordeaux and Napa Valley. How this is only $27.99 at WTSO is beyond me but I am buying a case. 94 points
Day 2: Again this is not the same experience and lacks that funk but great wine. Cassis, minerals, blueberries, graphite, dust, earth and gravel. Amazing stuff! 94 points
Recommendation: Normally I don't say BUY but this is an exception! $27.99 on WTSO.
Red
2011 Clarendon Hills Syrah Liandra Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Clarendon
88 points
Day 1: This one is not doing it for me. Very light for a Syrah especially from Australia. Almost diluted. Beef, light red currants, underbrush and damp earth. Mild spices on the finish. Lacks concentration and excitement. 85 points
Day 2: A little better but lacks concentration. Black pepper, light red currants, water, damp earth and mild spice. Shorter finish and bitter. Just not going to improve and I don't see any cellaring that is going to help this wine. 86 points
Day 3: Never give up on a wine but this day 3 is much better than day 1 and 2. More concentrated. Beef stew, green pepper, spice, damp earth and pepper. Still short on the finish but at least some Aussie Syrah enjoyment on day 3. 88 points
Recommendation: Easy pass as so much better out there for the money.
Red
2011 Clarendon Hills Cabernet Sauvignon Sandown Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Clarendon
95 points
Day 1: Holy Sh..! First bottle bringing the funk. Second bottle cross between Napa/Bordeaux and this bottle to the first bottle form bringing the FUNK! Think Cayuse without the olive character. Funk, minerals, spice, blueberries and dust. Hard to describe how good this is for $27.99. Lisa P. B. you got this one wrong and good luck on your new venture. 95 points
Day 2: A little less of the funk and reveals pepper, minerals, spice, cigar box, dust, earth and gravel. This is a transforming wine and one of the more interesting wines of the last 4 or 5 years. 94 points
