Flight 1 - Starters- Non Blind (4 notes)

White
2015 Joseph Drouhin / Drouhin-Vaudon Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Nose of lovely yellow fruit, chalky mineral, oily, almost diesel; palate richer and more generous, round and grand cru weight; good start to the day.
White - Sparkling
2005 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
Green apples and cream, luxurious, doughy, graphite, pretty open for a recently opened CdC, accessible, more yellow fruit on the palate, Chard notes more apparent, rich; in a very good spot now.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Egly-Ouriet Champagne Grand Cru VP France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
2013 Base; eggy, nutty, bitter lemon, talc, textured and intense, delicious, good ripeness and generosity for 3g/L; very good.

White - Sparkling
2002 Salon Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
Definitely a woo nose not dissimilar to Krug Mesnil, bread dough, rich and lush, lacy and silken, honeydew, eggy and almost dessert-like, still super fresh and not even 2ry, Grand Cru weight and power, elegant and refined mousse, generous dosage; killer stuff but even though it is so generous it still kind of begs for food, would be a great backdrop for elevated and complicated dishes especially something salty.

Flight 2 - Main Event Served Double Blind (9 notes)

$200+ wines for entry served double blind, so we didn't know which one was ours. Only stipulation for this event was that you couldn't bring Bordeaux. Host's choice which I really loved.

Red
2001 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
97 points
Cloudy core with large reddish maroon rim; meat, cedar, woodsy, light pine, smoked meat, perfumed, Indian spices, black pepper, granite, dark berry, slightly wild but a refinement that's apparent; good weight on the palate, leather, meat, fruit, pure cherry, nice freshness, regal and still nicely structured; delicious, have a sneaking suspicion that this is mine.

Red
2004 Antinori Solaia Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
93 points
Deep dark color, extracted, garnet rim; cocoa powder, wet earth, black currant, Cuban cigar, holly, red currant, exuberant ripeness, lots of fruit, green herbal edge is nice counterbalance, good grip to the tannin, black tea, leather, pencil shavings, a touch of black truffle and balsamic notes; in a good spot; '04 Messorio?

Red
2002 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
92 points
Dark core with maroon rim; herbal nose, sweet and liqueured, crushed roses, ripe, sour cherry, orange zest, medicinal, good weight and thickness to nose, kirsch, brown sugar, almost Amarone-esque, sandalwood, shorter finish, where does all of the rich fruit and texture go?; was thinking Grenache on the nose but what is this? so confusing; settled on '09 G Rinaldi C SL... still have yet to wrap my head around Unico blind- especially at these events where there's such stiff competition. Still waiting to be blown away by one too.

Red
1995 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
96 points
Cloudy, aged, reddish maroon; gun metal, dove shit, smoke, bright cherry and plum, edgy, more gun metal, leaner with this age, tons of mineral but fruit is pristine, mushroom, root vegetables, fungal fruit, leather; really good, bet this is younger than it seems; called '04 Fonsalette Cuvee Syrah; been liking this JL Chave cat of late.

Red
2001 Henri Bonneau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve des Célestins France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
95 points
See through crimson with orange rim; celery seed, incense, sour cherry, balsamic, not tannic, botrytis?, dried roses, sweet liqueured fruit yet somewhat demure, root vegetables, mushroom, tart lifted finish; '01 Fonsalette CdP?; after reveal this is so traditional yet elegant Grenache in the Rayas style, Celestins can start out so beefy and its transformation into something like this is pretty profound when it's at its fighting weight; in a great spot.

2013 Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Brunate Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
95 points

2010 Marqués de Murrieta Rioja Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
94 points
Pretty garnet to rim; appealing nose, sweet ripe fruit, sweet oak, touch of volatility, prominent legs though extraction is in check for something almost Amarone-like, plums, cherries and cream, young and interesting with a slight green edge, good balance to age well; young Bonneau?- gonna settle on Quintarelli; should know better...

2009 Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Brunate Le Coste Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Pretty crimson, tons of sediment, orange rim; cellar stink, roses, sexy nose, balsamic, leather, liqueured fruit, great fruit, mouth filling, noble wood, mahogany, spicy; delicious just not very attractive looking; '11 Pie Franco?

Red
2001 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
95 points
Cloudy, darker core with maroon rim; meaty, funky, iron, garrigue, herbal, mineral, plum, pepper, olives and iron, Clape?, rusty nail, slight stewed fruit, CdP considered but this says N Rhone to me, mesquite; delicious and in a sweet spot but this should improve if it softens a little; called '05 Clape; my note looks eerily similar to my note in 2016...this also won WOTN; found out later that this was out of RP's cellar- wow!

Flight 3 - Extras and Dessert Wines (5 notes)

The dessert wines were done non-blind.

Red
2016 Château des Tours Côtes du Rhône France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
Pretty red, sediment; slightly jammy, plums, figs, wild and fresh, herbs wafting; very good though not as noble as Rayas, called Chateau des Tours CdR- there we go, haven't lost it completely.

Red
2009 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Combe des Fous France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Out of magnum; pretty maroon; sweet fig, tart plum, sweet fruit, savory, fig, spice, exotic and rich, loads of herbs but not heavy and overdone which is sometimes my knock of Clos St Jean; very good; had to recuse from guessing on this one- too obvious a bottle.

White - Off-dry
2002 Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan Deidesheimer Hohenmorgen Riesling Auslese Germany, Pfalz
Mine; fresh looking with yellow straw color; intoxicating nose of honey, peach puree, pineapple, lovely botrytis, cream, eggy and rich like the Champagnes I love of late, lemon parfait; in a perfect spot and should be this way for a while.

Red - Fortified
1970 Graham Porto Vintage Portugal, Douro, Porto
Still fresh color with thin rim; high toned nose, red fruit, elegant, licorice, ripe berries, high toned on the palate but a little more restraint; elegant and refined this was almost overpowered by the flourless chocolate cake.

Red - Sweet/Dessert
2006 Tommaso Bussola Recioto della Valpolicella Tb Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Recioto della Valpolicella
Out of 500mL; cloudy dark core with reddish rim; lovely nose, loads of chocolate, deep cooked fruit, spices galore, almost coffee, so sweet and unctuous, really good, volatility works here, fresh and rounded.
