Introduction

A run through of Cornas from several producers. Vintage between 2004 to 2007

Flight 1 - 2 Producers and 2 vintages (3 notes)

Red
2004 Jean Líonnet Cornas France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
82 points
Mid-deep ruby graduating to an orange rim.
A bouquet of earth, liquorice, truffle and burnt toffee with glances of dark fruits.
A sweet, syrupy texture with accompanying molasses, caramel and toffee fruits. Whilst there is a richness, the wine has an open-knit, developed nose that feels cooked in its almost burnt fruits. Medium acid, broad mid-palate, there is little structure and the chewy, sinewy tannins lack shape. The wine is steadily falling apart and past its peak. Short finish with a touch of rubber on the back-palate.

2004 Domaine du Tunnel (Stéphane Robert) Cornas France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
86 points
Deep red to pinky/orange rim.
Aromas of violet, ripe fruits, oak and cinnamon spice and more undergrowth notes of fungi, button mushroom, bandages and iodine. As it opens, a little molasses nuance signals some development.
A sweet entry with a surprisingly sharp acid, yet the wealth of fruit gives it flesh. Modern in style with ripe berries, even a little perfumed and a waft of vanilla. The tannins are gravelly giving some firmness to the texture but the wine lacks the density of concentration that I expect from Cornas. It did improve in glass.

88 points
Deep black-red in colour, youthful the aromas are intense with blackberry, iodine, baking spice and ground pepper. A brooding wine, the entry is full-bodied, the texture powdery and the flavours show peat, pepper, blackberry, black plum, medicinal and preserved figs.
A tightly structured wine with great complexity and lively acid, there is a freshness, almost a hint of green herbs that all seem to work nicely. A long finish with chewy, densely packed tannins.

Flight 2 - 2005 from 3 different producers (3 notes)

Red
2005 Alain Voge Cornas France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
90 points
Old vines, the colour is a dull, mid-deep red. Aromas of tar, fresh meat, molasses, blackberry and liquorice.
The entry is deep, brooding and feels massive in approach. Full-bodied, grainy texture is enhanced by a lively to fresh mineral-edged acidity leading to building chunky, dense tannins giving a fabulous structure. There is some flesh here and plenty of dark fruits. The wine has a certain elegance, superb concentration and a long farewell. Complex and at a lovely stage of development but could still age further.

2005 Thierry Allemand Cornas Reynard France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
91 points
Deep black-red, the nose has a pinch of VA that blows off to reveal tar, liquorice, cinnamon, black fruits, blackberry and some wood smoke. As it opens, this veers to a savoury note and more smoking hedgerows.
Soft, smooth and approachable, this full-bodied Cornas is rich with warming alcohol (05?), satiny tannins and hints of gunpowder/mineral, blackcurrant compote and blackberry. Rounded, and complex, a lively acidity lifts this powerful but well-made (modern) wine.

Old vines, Fairly intense notes of dark fruits with some crushed stone and mineral qualities. Still quite subdued. [I seem to have lost the rest of my note, except to give it 85 points]

Flight 3 - One producers from 2 different vintages plus 2 quality levels. (3 notes)

2006 Domaine du Tunnel (Stéphane Robert) Cornas France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

Mid to deep purple, the nose is intense with cinnamon, nutmeg, liquorice and oak aromas. A fairly modern approach, the wine has a fresh, lively acid, grippy texture that is well balanced with sour cherry, blackberry, dried herbs and a touch of tapenade. The oak seems to work well. With a solidly built frame, the tannins are robust, giving a chewy finish that extends into the evening! Complex, delightful!

2007 Domaine du Tunnel (Stéphane Robert) Cornas France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
75 points
the nose reveals black peppercorns, iodine, medicinal, and crushed blueberries. There is a touch of funk with horse-y elements giving some wildness to the aromas. The entry continues with dried earth, more funk, and lively acidity but veers into a bitter finish. Brett starts to show quickly and derails the wine.

2007 Domaine du Tunnel (Stéphane Robert) Cornas Vin Noir France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

Old vines: 90-100 years. Deep black-red, the wine has a bright bouquet filled with black pepper, nutmeg, iodine, cigar box, medicinal and furfurol. There is a slight violet/lavender as the wine opens.
Youthful, the entry is full-bodied, foursquare with massive structure and extract leading to solid, dense tannins yet countered by a lively mineral-edged acid and plenty of concentrated fruit. Blackberry and boysenberry come to mind. Medium to long, there is a touch bitter on the finish, even a hint of green?. Robust wine!
