Introduction

Heights of Chianti Classico Masterclass hosted by Steven Spurrier during the "Decanter Great Italian Fine Wine Encounter"

Flight 1 (12 notes)

Red
2004 Badia a Coltibuono Chianti Classico Riserva Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
86 points
Bright purple in colour, this wine is a blend of Sangiovese and Canaiolo. The nose showed floral aromas with candied cherry fruit, sweet oak and vanilla ending in a hint of leather. The palate was elegant and smooth with a touch of natural tannin. Good now, but also has aging potential.
Red
2004 Rocca di Montegrossi Chianti Classico San Marcellino Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
79 points
Deep purple in colour, this wine spends 25 months ageing in oak then a further 1.5 years in the bottle. The nose is fairly rustic - notes of tar, roasted capsicum and earth. The palate is dense and warm. Burnt rubber and lots of oak. Structured, with a good middle palate, but to oaked for my liking.
Red
2004 Castello di Volpaia Chianti Classico Riserva Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
90 points
Medium purple in colour, this 100% Sangiovese wine is very site expressive (from high altitude vineyards). The nose shows candied fruit and a hint of oak. The palate is rich, elegant and smooth. Vibrant with good balance. Great fruit character. One of my favourites of the tasting.
Red
2004 Il Molino di Grace Chianti Classico Riserva Il Margone Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
85 points
Deep purple in colour this wine is of a more "modern" style. It spends 11 months in French oak and further time in the bottle. The nose shows floral characters - lots of red fruit, vanilla and oak. The grapes that made this wine must have been very ripe! The palate is elegant but robust. Fruity, round and carefully oaked.
Red
2004 Fattoria Nittardi Chianti Classico Riserva Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
90 points
Deep purple in colour with ruby edges this wine is aged in French barriques for 2 years. The nose is savoury, approachable and has nice cherry ripeness. The palate is rich, rounded and full. It has intensity of red fruit flavour and lots of oak. The dash of Merlot in the blend really brings some smoothness and structure. Great flavour at just 12.8%. Drinking well now, but will continue to improve for 5-10 years.
Red
2004 Marchesi Mazzei Chianti Classico Castello di Fonterutoli Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
89 points
Deep purple in colour, this wine is made from 90% Sangiovese and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. It spends 16 months in oak and 6 months in the bottle. The nose is earthy - showing a little cherry and spice. The palate is red fruit driven with some white pepper. It shows new oak and firm tannins. At 14.1% it's getting pretty heavy on alcohol, but still very enjoyable.
Red
2004 Barone Ricasoli Chianti Classico Castello di Brolio Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
87 points
Medium purple, almost red in colour this wine shows lots of ripe red fruit as well as meaty and fleshy characters on the nose. The palate is full bodied and firm. Depth of fruit and a hint of smoke. Warm with good length. Seems well made and has the structure to age up to 15 years.
Red
2004 Fontodi Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna del Sorbo Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
87 points
Deep purple, almost black, in colour this Sangiovese comes from a single vineyard. It's only made in outstanding vintages, and usually contains a dash of Cabernet Sauvignon. It spends 24 months in French oak. The nose shows savoury aromas with hints of leather, meat and earth. The palate shows sweet red fruit, earthy vineyard depth and natural tannins. Ends with elegance and finesse.
Red
2004 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Fontalloro Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
86 points
Deep purple in colour this wine showed sweet, candied fed fruit, vanilla, minerality (from the stony soil?), hints of smoke and a little alcohol on the nose. The palate is very rich and full. Lots of ripe fruit, oak and a natural touch of acidity. Well balanced.
Red
2004 Querciabella Camartina Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
72 points
Deep purple with a black core this wine is a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon (>20%!). The nose seemed quite porty with some faint fruit character. The palate was very firm, lots of oak, tannin and acid with a hint of hollowness in the middle. Not particularly elegant.
Red
2003 Isole e Olena Cepparello Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
79 points
Deep purple in colour, this wine spends 2 years in oak. The nose shows sweet red (stewed?) fruit and a hint of spice. The palate shows more ripe red fruit and a hint of oak. Nothing special in my opinion.
Red
1999 San Fabiano Calcinaia Cerviolo Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
79 points
Deep, dark purple in colour this wine is a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. The nope was savoury - showing dense, dusty, rubber characters. The palate is maturing, but still pretty fresh. Warmth and grip with supportive oak. Again, not one of my favourites.
