Flight 1 (6 notes)

Red
1990 Château Gruaud Larose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
90 points
Stood up for months and decanted off 2oz sediment. 12.5% alcohol. Medium ruby-garnet with age-appropriate bricking; medium intensity aromatics, some mulch, forest floor, mature and integrated fruit; palate is medium bodied, relatively low (12.5%) alcohol, medium-plus acidity, a bit of balsamic from age, fully integrated tannins that provide just a bit of structure; finish is medium length. A bit less character than my last bottle 4 years ago as it is lacking the red bell pepper that it had then. Will give it some time/air to open up. 89-90
30 minutes in glass: The bit of red bell pepper starts to come back and give the wine a bit of complexity and intrigue.
2 hours double decanted: this opened up nicely and shows mature Bordeaux character, good sous bois. 90
White - Sparkling
N.V. Dehours Champagne Terre de Meunier Extra Brut France, Champagne
90 points
100% Pinot Meunier. Aromatic, some red fruits, peaches and cream, slightly nutty; medium bodied, light mousse, lemon-lime, a bit tart; lacking a bit of length on the finish. Nice for the price point but not amazing. 90
Red
1989 Domaine de Trévallon France, Provence, Les Baux-de-Provence
93 points
Medium ruby, age-appropriate bricking; aromatic, aged Bordeaux character, red bell pepper, earthy, slight spice; palate is medium bodied, medium alcohol, medium-plus acidity, excellent mature red fruit, complex, great balance; finish is medium-plus length. Very nice, seems Cabernet dominant and competitive with a great Bordeaux at this age. 92
1-2 hours air: fabulous, continuing to improve with lovely red fruit and vibrancy, excellent complexity. 93
Red
1987 Bernard Faurie Hermitage Greffieux Bessard Méal France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
90 points
Medium aromatics, red fruit, some spice, some vanilla; palate is medium bodied, a bit polished, slight oak/vanilla, fresh acidity; finish is medium length, clean, balanced. 90
Red
1989 Marc Sorrel Hermitage Le Gréal France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
92 points
Aromatic, elegant, lovely spices, red fruited; palate is medium bodied, medium acidity, medium alcohol, good blend of fruit and maturity; fresh and medium length finish. Lovely aged hermitage. 92
White - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Château Coutet Barsac France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac
92 points
375mL. Fabulous yellow-golden color; incredible aromatics, floral, vibrant, touch of mint, honeyed; palate is light-medium bodied, elegant, floral, honeyed, apricots, white fruit; finish is medium-plus length with some minerality. Lovely, unique Coutet and Sauternes. Always a unique pleasure this year. 92
