Introduction

A fundraiser for a great cause, and a good time was had by all. Alas I did not take notes on all wines tasted.

Flight 1 (25 notes)

White - Sparkling
2013 André Robert Champagne Grand Cru Terre du Mesnil France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
90 points
Lots here, just (maybe) not yet? So much orchard fruit but with an austere edge.
White - Sparkling
1996 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon France, Champagne
93 points
Still wonderful, but one of the more mature examples of this wine I have tasted. Interesting in its evolution, with apple, pear, poached pear, and earth notes, this still retains its long and fun finish.

2005 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
This had just been opened, it was massively reductive. Aromas were actually more forthcoming than the palate, and there was wonderful substance following behind the reduction, but the full potential was tough to assess tonight.
White
2015 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
93 points
Tasted from magnum. A great 2015, this is wonderfully fresh while also wonderfully ripe. Long and texturally exciting finish.
White - Sparkling
2002 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
95 points
So much green and yellow apple with plenty of lemon, this is so bright and vibrant and long. This wine just keeps getting better, or perhaps I just didn't fully appreciate its potential in its youth. Upside from here.

2008 Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Cuvée Rare France, Champagne
94 points
Big, exciting, and racy with lots here. Complex and layered already, this seemed ready for prime time already now. Seemed much more composed and generous vs when tasted 6 months ago.

1990 Louis Latour Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
92 points
From magnum. I am so glad I gave this enough time and tried the wine a couple of times through the evening. This was ripe but unforthcoming to start (despite it being decanted in advance), but slowly and begrudgingly emerged into a rich beauty with caramel apple and honeycomb coming through after an hour or so in glass.

2001 Domaine Ponsot Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
90 points
From magnum. This wine has never thrilled me, and tonight's was consistent. Fully mature with lots of red and black cherry throughout, but also still more firm than I would consider ideal.
Red
1996 Château Latour Grand Vin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
95 points
What a treat. OK, not nearly as exciting as the 1990 from a few nights ago, or as perfectly composed as the 1982 that same night, but this has the stuffing and finesse to stand alongside those vintages. A great wine that is just now really finding its feet.

1999 Jean Noel Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
93 points
From magnum. Ripe apple and peach, still floral and well spiced with a dollop+ of earth just adding more complexity. Still fresh enough, which not common for JN Gagnard at this age. Really a great wine tonight.
White - Sparkling
2016 Georges Laval Champagne Premier Cru Brut Nature Les Chênes France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
93 points
So much apple, so finessed and complex already, I can't wait to taste this wine when really ready 2026 forward.
Red
1994 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
I haven't tasted this wine in the past decade, and still find it both amazing while amazingly backward. I am so excited about its vast potential, but patience is still required.
White
2020 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
94 points
Why did somebody open this so early? Even with three hours of air. I guess because they could. Brilliant concentration, backward in the middle, then finishing with a flourish of sorts. Great potential, probably 2030 forward. I am so glad I have two bottles in the cellar.

2013 Benoit Ente Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Folatières En la Richarde France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
93 points
I am upset I have none left. Rich, complex, layered, and elegant, this epitomizes why/ how 2013s are so great today.
White
2009 Weingut Keller Abts E® Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Rheinhessen
92 points
Almost identical to the bottle from a few days earlier, this is rich and hedonistic, just not as complex or layered vs what I might hope for.

1993 Jean-Jacques Confuron Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
91 points
Brilliant aromas are classically Vosne styled, just slightly lightweight on the palate for Vosne Grand Cru from a vintage like 1993. Very good now. My first time tasted this wine in this vintage, but I do own a bottle and am noe curious.
Red
1996 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
92 points
I really like this wine, but others love it. I always find it big and flashy, but it has never spoken "Volnay" to me. Same tonight.

I tasted this wine for the first time ever in late 2022 and was so underwhelmed, so am excited about tonight's bottle Still backward, but so powerful with a full tank of gas. Rich and voluminous.

Tasted just after the 2002, this slightly disappointed. Still very big but the oak dominated tonight. Previous bottles were much better, but I don't think cellar age is this wine's friend.

2001 Château Haut-Brion Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
90 points
I must admit I have never really understood Haut-Brion blanc, so wasn't surprised that I enjoyed this less than others tonight. I found it fun and lively, but that isn't what any of us want/ expect at this level and price.

1976 Mayacamas Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California
92 points
Wonderfully rich and still very exciting.
Red
1975 Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon Martha's Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
Mature and earthy, this is a wine that has never really performed well (for me) through the decades, and tonight's bottle was similarly enjoyable, but nothing more.
Red
2001 Sine Qua Non Midnight Oil USA, California, Central Coast
93 points
For me, 2002 was when Sine Qua Non was going from a very good to great producer. This continues to be a nearly great wine with dense, fleshy back fruit that is still reasonably fresh with subtle spice, faint complexity, and good+ concentration.
Red
1989 M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
96 points
While I consistently find Chapoutier to be inconsistent, this 1989 Pavillon has consistently been great and prototypically Hermitage for the past twenty years. A ripe and gracefully maturing powerhouse.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1996 M. Chapoutier Hermitage Vin de Paille France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
92 points
From 375 ml bottle. Sweet without anything cloying, this was easy to enjoy with its earthy peach melba notes.
