20 People Bring a Bottle (Good, The Bad & The Ugly)

Introduction

Well this was a classic bring a bottle of everyday wine drinkers. I actually like these events as I get to taste some new wines but some that are going to be awful that are marketing well. Orin Swift, Caymus... Overall, a fun event and got at least 5 wines that probably will make the 3 Day Wine Review Worst Wines of the Year! Still get the annoying Orin Swift Adds on Facebook and insult them every time but still get them.

Flight 1 (23 notes)

White
2013 Sisters Forever Chardonnay USA, California, Central Coast
77 points
Past its prime if there ever was a prime for this wine. Water, lemon and a touch of chemical. This is exactly why unoaked Chardonnays are never good and I have yet to taste one worth drinking.

2020 Moone-Tsai Vineyards Chardonnay USA, California, Napa Valley
92 points
This was excellent and tied for my second favorite wine of the tasting. Classic Napa Chardonnay with lemon, spice, apple, oak and minerals. Complex offering and funny there was 1/3 of the bottle left at the end of the tasting. I poured a few that did not try it and they loved it.
White
2021 Woodward Canyon Chardonnay USA, Washington
80 points
Ok this bottle is doing nothing for me on thinking there is a lot of good Chardonnay coming from Washington and I am one of the top advocates on Washington State Wines on Cellar Tracker. You want good Chardonnay Oregon and California. This is light almost like mineral water. A bit of spice and some fruit. Woodward Canyon should really stick to Merlot and Cabernet.
Red
2016 Fullerton Wines Pinot Noir Lichtenwalter Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge
93 points
One of the few 90 point or higher wines at this tasting. Not familiar with Fullerton but very impressed. Cranberry, spice, scorched earth, floral and raspberries. Complex offering and drinking in a good place right now but room for a few more years in the cellar. Thank you whoever brought this.
Red
2021 Sokol Blosser Pinot Noir Kalita Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton
86 points
Serviceable Pinot but overpriced for sure. So many better from Oregon. Light with strawberries, minerals and rose petals. Shorter finish. Lacks depth and concentration.

2019 Davies Vineyards Pinot Noir Ferrington Vineyard USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley
This was not very good. Muted fruits, damp earth and mild spice. Just not what I am looking for in a Pinot. Acidity low and shorter finish. Could be an off bottle so no rating.
Red
2021 Adelsheim Pinot Noir Willamette Valley USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Very disappointed with this based bottling. Simple taste and offered fruit, mild spice and some earth. Just lacks personality. Easy pass. Funny as I had this in the fall and showed way better. Scoring 84 points but not representative of the wine as had this today and was great.

2021 Hawthorne Road Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton
90 points
A new wine to me and cellar tracker. This was a solid overall. Cranberry, sour strawberries, minerals and floral notes. It is Shea so always a solid.

2013 Beaulieu Vineyard Tapestry Reserve USA, California, Napa Valley

For the group one if not the favorite. That bottle went quickly. Decant 3 hours and showed blueberries, menthol, spice, plum, earth and spice. Medium plus finish and drink now mode.

2018 Beaulieu Vineyard Tapestry Reserve USA, California, Napa Valley

An equal of the 13. Very good on the pop and pour but probably would have been better decanted. Cherry, plum, pepper, earth, tobacco and spice. Good concentration. Drink now to 2030.

2018 Bishop's Peak (Talley Vineyards) Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
80 points
Didn't really look to closely at the region and now my 80 point score makes sense. Paso is home to some of the worst deals on Cabernet in the world. I can't think who would be second but they are 1. Sweet, oak chips, ripe fruit and smoke.

2014 The Hess Collection Lion Tamer USA, California, Napa Valley
78 points
Another Napa Wine I have a zero desire to drink. Paint thinner, muted fruit and earth. This is a classic example of over paying for a wine with Napa on it.
Red
2020 Boisset Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Old Winery Road USA, California, North Coast, Napa County
74 points
Again another wine coming to light as was the Paso Cab. Boisset collection which makes sense. SWEET with some heat. This lacks all what I like about Cabernet Sauvignon. Wear is the balance?
Red
2019 Buena Vista Cabernet Sauvignon Chateau Buena Vista Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley
87 points
Not as good as over the 3 days earlier this year. This is why wines need to be prepared before reviewing. Sweet fruits, spice, floral and dried leaves. While very drinkable would probably have been better with some air.
Red
2020 Wiens Family Cellars Artist Series Crowded USA, California, South Coast, Temecula Valley
84 points
Just looking at the lineup would have had this in the bottom 5 due to it being from Temecula. Honestly better than most of the mess that was the sweet red wines at this tasting. Dry in style with forest floor, spice, red currants and smoke. Drinkable.
Orange
2020 Two Shepherds Pinot Gris Skin Fermented Clarbec Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley
68 points
Hardly drinkable. Not sure what this was but easy pass.
Red
2022 Birichino Carignane Car Car Glou Glou Akashita Montague USA, California, Central Valley, Lodi Mokelumne River
50 points
This is one of the worst wines I have ever tasted. I had 5 regular wine drinkers try this and all spit it out which at this party only I was smelling, swishing and spitting. Paint thinner, smucker's grape jam and water. This wine was not flawed it is just that bad. Crazy thing is a local wine shop recommended this to a guest. RUN!
Red
2017 Sterling Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Heritage Collection USA, California, Napa Valley
74 points
One guest loves the Sterling. I have yet to find one I like. A very simple wine with water, cherry juice and some spice. Again are people actually smelling and swishing their wines when they are reviewing???
Red
2018 Orin Swift Machete USA, California
65 points
Not only are the labels stupid on Orin Swift Wines the juice inside the bottle is much worse. Other than Caymus who gets more for their juice. These are bulk grapes at best in these bottles with some Mega Purple thrown in. Sweet, watered down, brown sugar and damp earth. Again when people rate these are you applying the tasting process correctly? Love the appellation of California on these.
Red
2018 Orin Swift 8 Years in the Desert USA, California
78 points
Personally, I always enjoy trying these wines at parties just so I don't have to spend $40. The deal should have been 80 years in the dessert. SWEET with ripe fruit, earth and floral. Mega purple alert and can we get some more acidity in these wines?
Red
2020 Caymus-Suisun The Walking Fool USA, California, North Coast, Suisun Valley
63 points
Ok so much I can say about this wine and I will. The name says it all. This is so sweet it tastes like they added sugar cubes to it. In these cheap wines they never show good fruit and the mega purple gives it that dark color. There is also a chemical element to this wine and that is probably what they spray on the vines to increase tons per acre. If you enjoy this wine please smell the wine and swish it around in your mouth with a proper stem. If you then still like this wine you might want to drink something else that is less expensive like a Seltzer. Top 10 for sure of the year worst wines.

Red
2018 Jonata Winery Todos USA, California, Central Coast, Ballard Canyon
92 points
Now thank you for saving the red wines at this tasting. This is what a red blend should taste like not some over the top sweet, manufactured garbage. This is nice with pepper, spice, blackberries, raspberries, floral and earth. Medium plus finish. Amazing a half of bottle was left when I left as other than the 2 BV's and a few Pinots by far the best wine in the red category.
Red
2019 Benziger Family Winery Oonapais USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley
84 points
Serviceable wine with plum, floral and spice. Much better than the Orin Swift, Caymus and 8 Years.
