Introduction

This was a last minute gathering that just has not worked out for some time. It was fun to get a couple people together to enjoy and warm and windy afternoon on the deck (KB/VB, GA, JS, RF). We had some really nice wines and a bevy of fun dishes to pair.

Flight 1 (7 notes)

White - Sparkling
2008 Delamotte Champagne Blanc de Blancs Millésimé France, Champagne
94 points
Light gold color. Drank a glass plus over 45 minutes. I was very excited to open this given Chablis28's recent rave review. The last ime I had it, it was very good, but not on that level yet. That said, we'd also had a Delamotte BdB from mag about a week ago that peaked my attention, so I was all the more looking forward to this. The nose is lovely offering a mix of toast, hazelnut, cedar box, oyster shell, and orchard fruits. The palate is so elegant, classic really, earthy crustaceans, saline, toast, nutty, pear, citrus, seashore minerality, medium bodied and lifted on a lengthy finish. Loved it.

White
2019 Pazo de Barrantes Rías Baixas Gran Vino Spain, Galicia, Rías Baixas
94 points
Light gold color. Drank a glass plus over an hour. This really was staggeringly good. A striking wine, that grabs you from the get go. The nose oozes peach and stone fruits, mineral, melon and saline. The palate is really driven; lots of saline, ocean character, citrus infused peach oil, deep with a slight buttery, richer note, and very long on the finish. Wow, stunning. 93+ to 94pts.
White
2006 Daniel-Etienne Defaix Chablis 1er Cru Côte de Léchet France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
92 points
Light gold plus color. Drank a glass plus over an hour. Lots of Meyer lemon on the nose, lemon zest, and cool citrus on the nose which gradual engages the minerality. The palate shows the mineral base, lots of lemon, saline and oyster. Got better over 30 minutes. Maybe not quite as compelling as the last couple bottles, but close. 92+pts.

White
2015 Liquid Farm Chardonnay Golden Slope USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills
91 points
Light gold color. Drank a glass plus over 45 minutes. A worthy pairing for our lobster tails, this was round and rich, golden fruits, a touch of buttery oak. The palate is more pear, some citrus, a touch volatile, tangy, a bit of oak, and that same sense of richness. Probably a little past the apex, so I'd plan on drinking these sooner.
Red
2010 Mollydooker Shiraz Carnival of Love Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
93 points
Very dark red/purple color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour. This has a mesmerizing nose that really carried the wine. The nose is brilliant with earth and leather first, then a wave of roasted and dried meats, a hint of menthol, great spices and oregano, blackberries, and a blackcherry under current. The palate is nice, but not at the level of the nose; dark fruits, mainly blackberry, black pepper, glycerin, scrorched earth, a touch of oak, blackberry liqueur, well concentrated. The nose is an easy 95pts, but the the palate comes in around 91 to maybe 92; but dang - I could smell this all day. My guess is this peaked a couple years ago and the fruit isn't quite where it was then.
Red
2016 Carlisle Zinfandel Montafi Ranch USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
90 points
Very dark red color. PNP, drank a glass plus over 30 minutes. Raspberry, peppery, a little herbaceous, spicy, a bit of vanilla on the nose. The palate shows raspberries, pepper, some heat, and comes off a bit stark. 89 to 90pts.

Red - Sweet/Dessert
2010 Redstone Winery Cabernet Franc Icewine Canada, Ontario, Niagara Peninsula, Beamsville Bench VQA
88 points
Tawny color. Small glass from 375ml. Ripe strawberry, with raisin, tangy, sweet, very ripe; for me this doesn't carry the acidity to keep it from getting cloying very quickly. Tasty, but a little goes a long way. 88 to 89pts.
