IPNC Weekend 2023
Tasted July 26, 2023 - July 31, 2023 by rocknroller with 70 views
Introduction
This was the 2023 IPNC Weekend. We had a great group that gathered from Minneapolis and Seattle. Matt & Brenda, Lonny & Kim, and us flew out a day early to take advantage of the Portland and hit the Columbia River Gorge for some hiking. We had a pre IPNC dinner at the Joel Palmer House Thursday even with CHO Wines. We met up with the rest of the group Friday for IPNC festivities with Jason and Tracy, Siggy , Candace, Eric, and Adam. After IPNC the 6 of us headed to the coast for.a.c0uple more days. Thanks to everyone for making this a memorable weekend with great friends! And the wines, they were pretty awesome too :).
Flight 1 - Le Pigeon Dinner, Portland, Pre-IPNC (3 notes)
White - Sparkling
2012 R. & L. Legras Champagne Grand Cru Présidence Vieilles Vignes
France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Light gold color. Drank a glass over 40 minutes at Le Pigeon in Portland. This was shining again tonight. Had this last, just over a year ago, and this bottle was every bit as good and probably better. Autolytic nose, almond, toffee, pear and brioche on the nose. The palate is equally toasty, pear, almond paste, zippy acidity, very bright with excellent length and intensity. 94-94+pts.
White
2017 Louis Jadot Corton-Charlemagne Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Light gold color. Drank a glass over 45 minutes at Le Pigeon in Portland. Showing nicely with stone, tarragon, lemon oil, lemon peel, creme brulee and butter brickle on the nose. The palate is full bodied and layered with green apple, buttered pastry, Anjou pear, gun metal and stone, lemon oil, custard, spice and lemon peel on the finish. Showing very well already. 93(+)pts.
Red
2011 Bergström Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton
Medium red color with a 5mm transition to clear. PNP, drank a glass over an hour at Le Pigeon in Portland. Oddly enough, it's been almost exactly 10 years since I had this last at Berstrom on another WV trip. This has developed nicely and shows such poise and class from a cool and wonderfully ageable vintage that I adore; and coming in at a delightful 12.75% ABV too. There's an emerging perfume here with wild strawberry, earth, mushroom, cherry, soil and ultrafine dried tobacco on the nose. The palate is medium bodied, elegant, strawberry, tart cherry, mushroom, a touch of iron minerality, and a cool crisp palate with fine grained tannins. Love this. 93+pts.
Flight 2 - Official Pre-IPNC Wine Dinner: CHO Wines at The Joel Palmer House (7 notes)
Red

Light medium bricked red color. Small glass, Grand Sem. 667 clone. The nose is better than the palate here. Cherry with berry nuances, forward, ground coffee, evolves to pretty strawberry notes. White
2002 Marcel Deiss Schoenenbourg
France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
Medium dark gold color. Small glass over 40 minutes. Drank this side by side with the '06. Both are excellent, but the intensity and acid stand out on the '02. This was beautiful, tropical, pineapple, mango, ripe peach, spicy, vibrant. The '06 is similar, but less acid and energy.
Red
2006 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes

Such bright cherry fruit marks the transparency and clarity here; gorgeous layers and deep dried forest floor with crushed herbs and subtle rose hips on a oh so elegant texture with ultra refined tannins. Showing well. 94+ to 95pts.
Red
2021 Salty Goats Pinot Noir Coastline Project
USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

White
2022 Tesselaarsdal Chardonnay
South Africa, Cape South Coast, Walker Bay, Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge
Light gold color. Small pour at Grand Dinner. I found Berene Sauls and her wines to be quite engaging and a pleasant find. The pinot the night before at the Joel Palmer House was inttriguing and tasty. This chardonnay was fresh and bright, with green apple on the nose and lemon notes on the palate; steely and dellcious. I be happy to have these again.
Flight 7 - IPNC: Solena Winery Visit and Sustainability Tasting (7 notes)
Red
2020 Dancin Vineyards Pinot Noir Setti Pezzi Dancin Vineyards
USA, Oregon, Southern Oregon, Rogue Valley
Light medium red color. Small glass, Solena Visit. One of the most pleasant surprises of the trip. Dried herbs on the nose, followed by earth and red fruit. The palate is a nice medium body, spicy red fruits, woody character, tangy, a touch of vanilla and youthful firm structure. Nicely put together, not at all big or hot.
Red

Red
2018 Landmark Pinot Noir Rayhill Vineyard
USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Small glass, Solena visit. Riper red berries of raspberry and strawberry, high toned potpourri nose. The palate is ripe, overly spicy, feels kinda of hot. The nose is better than the palate for me, but others will love this Cali style. 89 to 90pts.

Small glass. Salmon bake. Thomas mini vertical. This was nice, but losing some of the fruit, still some red berries, dry earth, potpourri, spices. Was expecting more from the '05.
Red
2008 Thomas Pinot Noir Dundee Hills
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
Drank a small glass in a mini fractured vertical at the salmon bake. Deeply earthy with a lovely perfume, flowers, strawberry, funk, and sous bois. Excellent, and though this is isn't the perfect format, I had even higher hopes for the '08.
Red
2013 Thomas Pinot Noir Dundee Hills
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
Medium red color. PNP, drank a glass at the salmon bake and a smidge again day two. Orange peel, dried mushrooms, pencil, red berries on the nose. Red berries, pencil, dried herbs, firm tannins. Rounded out further with a nice softening. Day 1 92pts, day 2 92+ to 93pts.
Red
2014 Thomas Pinot Noir Dundee Hills

Red
2016 Thomas Pinot Noir Dundee Hills
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
Small pour, salmon bake. Tough on a PNP tonight and no real estate to hold it. Ripe, young, green still, promising. 91 impression tonight.
Red
2007 Alexana Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Medium red color. Drank a glass at the Salmon bake. From 9 liter bottle. Really nice, super fun bottle, dried earth, spices, perfumed, cherry, good structure and some firmness on the tannins yet.
Red
2011 Staatskellerei Zürich Pinot Noir
Switzerland, Eastern Switzerland, Zürich, Meilen
Not at all sure this is even close to the right bottle. Eric's bottle at the salmon bake. Tasty, cherry, toucb of vanillin, perfumed berry nose, a little woody on the palate and some harder edges. Proper, tasty, nose is better than the palate.
Flight 10 - Champagne Brunch (4 notes)
White - Sparkling
N.V. Henri Giraud Champagne Esprit Nature
France, Champagne
Drank a glass over an hour at the Champagne Brunch, IPNC. This was a significant step up over the Hommage au Pinot Noir Aÿ we had a couple days before. This was really crisp, taut, citrus, nice mineral definition, not aggressive, enough fruit to nicely carry the Brut Nature, and not oxidative at all. 91+ to 92pts.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Laurent-Perrier Champagne Cuvée Rosé Brut
France, Champagne
Light salmon color. Drank a glass plus over an hour at the Champagne Brunchat IPNC. Well, it is L-P afterall, what more do I need to say. It is the standard bearer. Pretty, precise, and elegant with its delightful red berry signature. 93+pts.
Flight 11 - Cannon Beach: The Bistro Dinner (3 notes)
White - Sparkling
2007 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut
France, Champagne
Light gold color. Drank 2 glasses over an hour plus. Brought this to the Bistro in Cannon Beach. Wow, this was a head turner tonight. Beautufully toasted with a dulce de leche, creme brulee nose complimented by such pretty ocean air and wet stones, mixed with pear pastries. The palate is equally divine displaying the depth and intensity of a hallmark Champagne. I was amazed at how this just went on and on. Every bit as good as the best bottles of '04 and '06 we had over the years. Glad to have a stash. 96pts or better.
White
2014 Domaine Billaud-Simon Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Pale gold color. Drank a couple glasses over 2 hours. Matt's bottle, at the Bistro in Cannon Beach. This was really expressive, showing purity and that crystalline focus, cool lemon, dynamic sea breezes with a pleasing note that I just can't quite put my finger on. The palate has that same intensity, purity and focus; sour lemon, briny and swampy earth with a little green apple on a the back end. Thrilled to see I have a couple of these :). 94+ to 95pts.
Flight 12 - Cannon Beach: Evening Bonfire Wines (2 notes)
Red
2012 St. Innocent Pinot Noir Justice Vineyard
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills
Dark red color, I think - hard to tell in the moon light. Drank a couple glasses by fire light on Cannon Beach. What a glorious evening sitting with friends around the beach bonfire. This hit the spot perfectly in the crisp evening air. Better than anything through the IPNC weekend. A stellar wine drinking at the best it has in recent years. The nose is deep and sappy, with red and black berries, damp forest floor, exotic spice notes and floral potpourri overtones. The palate exudes everything the nose brings, earthy, layered berries with underlying mineral tones and impressive texture and length. Pretty sublime...well done Mr. V. This can go for awhile.
Red
2009 Faiveley Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
Dark red color. PNP, drank two glasses over an hour. Lonny's bottle, and a great way to cap off an excellent dinner at the Bistro in Cannon Beach. Love this nose, there's layers of minerality, graphite, dry earth, more subtle dark fruits with a slight vegetal note that gradually show some pretty, deep red berry notes and rose petals. The palate has a strong vein of spice, graphite and iron, with leather, black cherry. This is dense, yet still lifted with medium grained tannins. Really in a good spot.
Flight 13 - Cannon Beach: Stephanie Inn Dinner (3 notes)
White - Sparkling
N.V. Bérêche et Fils Champagne Brut Réserve
France, Champagne
Bronze hued light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. Matt's bottle at The Stephanie Inn. Golden fruits, plenty of coarse yeast, roasted nuts, red apple, rich with a fine mousse and a sacory finish. Always a pleasure.
White
2013 Domaine Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Pale gold color. Drank a glass plus over an hour plus. Brought this to The Stephanie Inn for dinner. Very much the picture of Chassagne elegance in a glass. Lemony sea breezes whisk you off to a happy place with chamomile and tarragon top notes and stone fruit accents on the nose. The palate follows through with the same wistful medium bodied elegance that is so understated yet suave and sophisticated: lemon with a lime twist, stone fruit, stone, and a great dry extract finish. (12K)
Red
2018 Antica Terra Pinot Noir Ceras
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Medium dark red color. PNP, drank a glass plus over 90 minutes. Lonny's bottle at The Stephanie Inn. This has a wonderful nose that doesn't need much time to evolve. Lovely dried leaves on the nose, dried herbs, spiced red raspberry, mulberry, silky, medium bodied, and giving way to damp forest floor. 92+ to 93pts.
Flight 14 - Cannon Beach: Evening Bonfire Wines - 2 (2 notes)
Red
2009 Faiveley Clos Vougeot
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Medium red color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes at the Grand Dinner. Matt's bottle. Charcoal, leather, deep earthnotes, lush, dark fruits, love it and the intensity.
Red
2001 Charles Noellat Mazis-Chambertin
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
Medium red color. Drank a couple glasses around the beach fire at Haystack Rock. PNP, drink great, deep moist earth, iron, blood, red berry and dark cherry, medium plus body, long and vivid.
