Flight 1 - White (1 note)

Served with canapes

White
2016 Prunatelli Canaiolo Bianco Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Quite aromatic with yellow apple, pear, white flowers and a touch of honey. Palate is immediately quite dry and crisp with less to show that the nose with a little apple and honey. Fairly persistent finish. Nice but fairly simple

Flight 2 - Skin contact (1 note)

Served with purple sprouting broccoli, bagna cauda and poached egg

Orange
2019 Fattoria di Bacchereto Sassocarlo Terre a Mano Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Interesting skin contact wine from an area i'm not familiar with to the west of Florence.
Very perfumed nose with cologne, crushed stones and over-ripe apples. Richer on the palate with more ripe apple and a hint of spice.
I quite like this general style of wine time-to-time and am partial to producers like Gravner. This isn't on that level but an interesting and enjoyable wine needing the right pairing.

Flight 3 - Sangiovese in purezza (4 notes)

Served with Cavatelli with wild board bolognaise and Parmesan

2010 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Fontalloro Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

First time trying Fontalloro.
On the nose - fresh plum, grenadine, sun-dried tomato, and terracotta dust.
Good depth on the palate with blue fruit balanced by a fresh finish.
This was rather overshadowed by its flight mates but was lovely and, this bottle seemed to be in a good spot

1997 Siro Pacenti Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

This was superb mature Brunello.
Gorgeously perfumed nose of Italian leather, dried cherry and plum. On the palate there is wonderful depth with sweet cherry, dark plum, chocolate and pomegranate. Long long finish.
Really stand out but drinking at point now.

1995 MastroJanni Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Schiena d'Asino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Last bottle and a notch below the performance of the last one.
Complex nose of terracotta, orange peel, dried fruit. Fresh and crisp on the palate, perhaps initially a little too lean but puts on weight with air and then shows the range of flavours found on the nose with some Burgundian finesse (hate saying that but hey). A final outing for me but to drink up if you have any

2004 Cerbaiola (Salvioni) Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

This was actually my backup to the Mastrojanni but was opened in error and so we happily had to have this now. A single bottle i own of this and first time having their Brunello.

The nose is quite dark with evolved fruit some acceptable funkiness (light VA and perhaps brett) that gets better with air. On the palate this delivered a distinct dried cherry cough linctus flavour that I like a lot with good depth and complexity. Tannins still present on the finish which puts this in a spot of having some good tertiary evolution with some good structure still present.
Good but for the price point not sure best VFM

Flight 4 - Super tuscans (4 notes)

Served with veal cheek and fillet, creamed polenta, pancetta and girolles

Red
2010 Fattoria Petrolo Galatrona Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Nose was quite subdued here with a bit of dark plum but not much else.
On the palate there is a round richness with plum and spice but tannins then kick in and throw it off. Would leave well alone for now

Like it's Galatrona flight mate this also had quite a subdued nose but a little more open. On the palate this had round, tangy plum and the tannins were more approachable. Good but not quite what i'm into.

Firstly i'd say the drinking range on CT stopping at 2023 is wrong - this can age a lot more.
Beautiful nose of dark fruit and modest oak spice. Palate consistent with the nose with deep dark fruit, some toastiness (but not sweetness) and good acidity. Good balance and improved with air.

Wasn't aware of this producer before this - Sangiovese dominant blend with CS.
Interesting nose with black tea and a little smoke (i guess lapsang-esque!).
Much fresher on the palate with dried cherry and some blue fruit - all with good depth and balance. An interesting and enjoyable wine - would like to dry younger vintages

Flight 5 - Vin Santo (1 note)

Served with lemon verbena tart

White - Sweet/Dessert
1999 Caparsa Vin Santo del Chianti Classico Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Vin Santo del Chianti Classico
93 points
This was excellent.
This has a constellation of aromas and flavours with butterscotch, nuts, Camps coffee syrup and orange peel. Good balance to it all too.
Lovely stuff from Paolo!
