Flight 1 (13 notes)

White
2015 Maison Nicolas Morin Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Terres Blanches Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
92 points
Medium yellow, with some gold hue. Still fresh tropical fruits on the nose to start, but it then quickly gains oxidative characters to the point of having some toast and marzipan. Bright acids and quite a bit of weight, with toast, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a little buttery feel, then witg rioe pineapple and mango, but otherwiae still retains a little bit of freshness. Nice!

2018 Serafin Père et Fils Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Les Millandes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
91 points
Medium pale ruby. Nose and palate started very tight, but showed medium ripe redcurrant after a couple hours of air, as well as a slight hint of cinnamon and nutmeg. Tannins remaining edgy even after hours of breathing, but the breathing does allow the wine to show up red cherry on the palate. Not really an easy wine to tackle, but does reward with patience

2018 Gilles-Jourdan Côte de Nuits Villages La Robignotte France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Nuits Villages
92 points
Pale ruby. With a little breathing the aromas of ripe cherry wafts out, along with fresh cut grass and hay, and a hint of inkiness, like liquorice. Very lean and zingy on the palate, with mostly brine then unerripe cherry and hibiscus, and then some twiggy feel and a hint of moss. Nice!

2017 Domaine Jean Chauvenet Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
91 points
Pale ruby. Started rather floral on the nose and then quickly became somewhat cocoa and earthy. Good structure with vibrant acids and zingy tannins, then with red floral and tart sour cherry on the palate, with a hint of moss and twigs. Medium length

2018 Maison Albert Bichot Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Château Gris France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
92 points
Pale ruby with a violet hue. Good balanced aromas of violets, twigs, cherry, and some caramel and cocoa on the nose. Also similarly rustic and earthy on the palate, with dried florals, as if potpourri, then some tart red cherry, redchrrant, and some brine, then even a little bit of seaweed. Quite lengthy, and really a complex wine. Such notes only showed after 5-6 hours of breathing, so it's really one that needs ageing, or lots of air

2014 Domaine du Clos de Tart Clos de Tart France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de Tart Grand Cru
93 points
Pale garnet. A refined nose with red floral aromas and a hint of underripe red cherry. On the palate the tannins seem a little softened but still providing a bite whilst acids still zingy, and with tart red cherry flavours, florals, earth and moss. Quite lengthy and much of the finish owes to it's linear structure. A great wine no doubt but definitely could benefit with some more years in the bottle

2008 Bouchard Père et Fils Corton-Le Corton France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
89 points
Pale garnet, and visible browning and fading edges. Aromas mainly of dried cherry and tomato, then hint of dried florals and hay. Tannins nearly completely resolved, while flavours mostly of forest floor, slight fungals, nutmeg, five spices, and meat roast, while the cherry fruits felt rather receded. It's one that had seen better days years ago, but I think is past its best now. Quite a pity

2014 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Grèves Vigne de L'Enfant Jesus France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
92 points
Medium pale ruby. Nose exhibiting some richness, with plush ripe cherry and redcurrant, as well as florals, moss, and rich vanilla and cinnamon. Similar characters on the palate, whilst the tannins were still pretty robust, with zingy acids, all the while bring full and plush. Nice!

2010 Château Pavie Macquin France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
92 points
Deep ruby. Has a pretty classic Bordelaise nose what with blackberry, cassis, mint and fresh herbs and cut grass, cloves, nutmeg, and a hint of vanilla. Similar deep black-fruited showings on the palate and with sweetish green herbs, then pepper and paprika, whilst it seemed to take a slight savoury turn towards the back, of soil and truffles. Tannins robust throughout, and a long finish

1974 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
89 points
Medium garnet, with significant browning and fading on edges. Nose exhibiting pepper, cloves, dried grass, hint of dried flower, and dried cranberry and dates. Tannins still giving a bite, while having a rather lean mouthfeel, somewhat hollow in fact, and with mostly tertiary peppery meaty flavours, and dried grass, and fruits seem to be nearly completely missing. A bottle that has seen better days in the last decade, but definitely too old now

Deep ruby, with some visible browning and fading on edges. Dried floral aromas, as well as red cherry, dill, tarragon, thyme, and pepper, as well as rosy florals. Somewhat lean and silky, with tannins present but not completely imposing, and flavours of red and black cherry, blackberry, thyme, mint,  cut grass, and black pepper. Quite lengthy at the back. Interesting how such a warm vintage of Bordeaux actually produced such a soft, silky wine, when I had expected it might have been otherwise too tight. Great wine!

1993 Château Canon France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Deep garnet. Very developed nose of mostly earth and mushrooms, and some dried grass and green stems. Tannins still giving a little bite, but the flavours on the palate only showed the pepper, greens, earth, dehydrated moss, and mushrooms. Challenging vintage no doubt, but a little unpleasantly surprised that a good example of St-Emilion in the 90s could turn out so overdeveloped. Not too sure it it's the provenance of that magnum bottle, but otherwise seems that it's time to tread carefully on wines of the challenging early 90s vintages

2009 Les Pagodes de Cos France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
91 points
Medium deep garnet. Floral aromas to start, then hay, barnyard, red cherry and cassis. Somewhat soft tannins on the palate whilst still rather intense on flavours with green mint, cherry and redcurrant, and then some cloves and nutmeg. Fairly lengthy
