Park90 / Grand Cru SQN Masterclass

Tasted January 27, 2024 by melvinyeowq with 100 views

Introduction

1030am SQN masterclass that I thought was good value when I bought the ticket but wished I stayed in bed instead by the end. Before anyone says they are technically good wines etc, I believe in market forces, and when I left the room I saw that 90% of the people barely made much progress on their wines. A stark contrast to the Fourrier masterclass last year when everyone finished their wines within half an hour! I came in with an open mind like the Bond tasting that I did last year (which did change my impression of this type of wines), unfortunately this left me thinking SQN must be somebody's idea of a big joke.

Flight 1 (6 notes)

White
2007 Sine Qua Non Body & Soul USA, California
91 points
71% Roussane, 29% Viognier; 15.5% alcohol. Expressive floral aromatics, still very young and fresh on the palate. Preferred the restraint here compared to the 2019 which was too flabby. Impressive weight, but became more candied with air. Fine for S$100 but S$500? You must be kidding.

White
2019 Sine Qua Non Distenta White I USA, California, Central Coast
89 points
Blend of five grapes; 15.3% alcohol. Big-boned, tropical fruit of peach and apricot. Too candied and came across as a look-at-me wine that was trying too hard to be serious Chardonnay.
Red
2008 Sine Qua Non Grenache THE Line USA, California, Central Coast
65 points
87.5% Grenache, 11% Syrah, 1.5% Viognier; 15.7% alcohol. First impression was this was so flat - anexample of a high-alcohol, extracted wine that had completely fallen apart with age. Pruney, cherry vodka flavours; tannins were all over the place.

2020 Sine Qua Non Grenache Distenta II USA, California, Central Coast
83 points
77.9% Grenache, 15.8% alcohol. Thought the nose was promising, quite lifted and perfumed. Heard that SQN was going for gentler winemaking in recent vintages - could see the lighter extraction but guess they forgot to rein in the alcohol and oak. I really dislike sweetness in red wines and this was unbearably so.

Red
2008 Sine Qua Non Syrah B 20 USA, California, Central Coast
91 points
92% Syrah, 6% Grenache, 2% Viognier; 14% alcohol. Most old-world and palatable of the reds - at least I could decipher this to be a Syrah. Northern Rhone-like savoury bacon notes which I enjoyed, but why not buy a case of Levet instead (which would age better too)?

83% Syrah, 15.9% alcohol. Strong whiff of vanilla on the nose, blueberry and chocolate notes on the palate. Vodka cherry vibes. Had pretty much given up at this point.
