Introduction
This was another example of a gentlemen, Don Schiff and his love of Vintage Port and sharing! What a treat as I flew out the night before from Miami and returned this morning early. The food complements to each flight were extraordinary. Kudos to Chef Drew Rosenberg for an outstanding meal and To Chef Wolfgang Puck and his restaurant.
Flight 1 (2 notes)
Canapés and other passed hors d’Oeuvres were delcious.
Flight 2 (3 notes)
Duo of Hudson Valley Foie Gras, honey crisp apple compote, port wine glee and brioch
Red - Fortified
1970 Taylor (Fladgate) Porto Vintage
Portugal, Douro, Porto
Out of magnum, which of course is a great way to enjoy a glass with 44 friends. For me, I got toasty notes, chocolate and a bit dusty finish. Improved in the glass over the next 2 hrs.
Flight 3 (5 notes)
Roasted Maine Lobster, cipollini Nixon, balsamic - port glaze
Red - Fortified
1966 Warre Porto Vintage
Portugal, Douro, Porto
Initially, nice but not much too it. Sleepy and while it sat in the glass it was smoother and the palate and quite enjoyable. Bday treat for my friend Chris.
Red - Fortified
1963 Warre Porto Vintage
Portugal, Douro, Porto
Out of magnum, second wine in the flight. Great color, classic for the vintage, lovely palate. Port sense based on vintage, light with that hint of licorice.
Red - Fortified
1963 Dow Porto Vintage
Portugal, Douro, Porto
Out of magnum. Deep color and depth on the palate. A bit of a sting of alcohol, dryer style but my first glass finished in the flight of 5.
Flight 4 (6 notes)
Carnaroli Risotto, Marco Farms Veal Shank, Himalayan morel mushrooms
Red - Fortified
1955 Cockburn Porto Vintage
Portugal, Douro, Porto
Out of magnum. Tasting of (4) ‘55’s. Syrupy, tasting plastered the palate, marshmallow and caramel. 1955 had 26 port houses declared the vintage.
Red - Fortified
1955 Fonseca Porto Vintage
Portugal, Douro, Porto
Out of magnum and another terrific showing. Classic. I love my birth year vintage ports and I love Fonseca. Blended by Dorothy Guimaraens a first at that time. Historic.
Red - Fortified
1955 Sandeman Porto Vintage
Portugal, Douro, Porto
Out of a Tregnm or 2.25ltr bottle. Finished to early in this flight but it was pretty good. Also have one n the Cellartracker along with a 3.0L
Flight 5 (5 notes)
Jurgielewicz Aged Peking Duck, plum sauce, duck fat ba buns, blood orange duck jus
Red - Fortified
1927 Taylor (Fladgate) Porto Vintage
Portugal, Douro, Porto
Out of 2 750’s, one btl corked the other, which i drank from was in perfect condition. Tour de force. All the elements were in line. Color, depth, palate and finish. I experience this wine maybe 25 years ago and it is a treasure at 96+years old. Prolific declarations by all the port houses.
Flight 6 (1 note)
Flight 7 (3 notes)
Cromwell Bishop Stilton Cheese, fruit and nut bread
Red - Fortified
1896 Dow Porto Vintage
Portugal, Douro, Porto
Out of a Tregnum. What a treat. Observation, should have been opened and then serve. Still outstanding and another great experience
Closing
