Introduction

Great to sample a wide range of wines in Zalto glasses with one per wine and plenty of opportunity to revisit.

Flight 1 - Champagne (1 note)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Deutz Champagne Brut Classic France, Champagne
89 points
Lemon Barely Water on the nose with some sourdough breadcrumbs and some lovely slatey minerality. With air a little lime oil. Palate very agreeable nice but not overpowering acidity and my kind of dosage.

Flight 2 - Cotes de Beaune Whites (2 notes)

White
2015 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
94 points
Clean, bright, long and elegant. Some lemon oil on the nose. Palate is racy, pure and slatey. What a treat. Top notch stuff. With air at the end of the evening this has not faded one iota. There is a layer of subtle florality too.
White
2012 Buisson-Charles Meursault Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
84 points
There is some buttery Mintoe to the nose here and some suggestion of torn tarragon leaf but there is something not right. Some cinders and green banana. Hoping that air will bring it round but no improvement really after nearly 4 hours in the glass. Shame one senses a lovely wine underneath.

Flight 3 - Volnay (2 notes)

Red
2009 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay Vendanges Sélectionnées France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay
88 points
Dark fruited and meaty on pouring with some aniseed in the mix. Palate is tannic and ungiving. Hints of sous bois but this is not much fun right now.
Red
2005 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay Vendanges Sélectionnées France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay
87 points
More redcurrant fruit on the nose here than the 2009 it's served alongside. With air some chestnut sweetness and a little bresaola. Something odd about this and once again the palate is tight and uncompromising.

Flight 4 - Morey St. Denis (2 notes)

Red
2016 Domaine Ponsot Morey St. Denis Cuvée des Grives France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis
92 points
Bright fruited and joyful. Smoky, rich and long. Some blackcurrant notes complement the plum fruit, fresh, long and balanced. Yum
Red
2001 Domaine Ponsot Morey St. Denis Cuvée des Grives France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis
91 points
Smoky strawberries, cool fruited. Fully mature, a touch of sous bois and the faintest hint of animale. Some venison carpaccio on the nose with air. Very good. Slightly prefer the 2016 of the pair.

Flight 5 - Nuits St. Georges (2 notes)

Red
2017 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges
93 points
Rich, deeply red fruited and slightly smoky Nuits. Some cranberry coulis, under ripe strawberries and some black pepper. Improves with air.
Red
2017 Francois Confuron-Gindre Nuits St. Georges France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges
91 points
Takes a while to chill out after a precocious first 5 minutes; on pouring there is a pronounced lime curd quality and spiciness. A little high toned. With half an hour in the glass this has really settled down still brightly fruited but only hints of citrus lift and a more joined up palate.

Flight 6 - Gevrey-Chambertin (2 notes)

Red
2010 Domaine Denis Bachelet Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
92 points
Another wine with great length, some venison and blackcurrant shortcake sweetness. Palate very well balanced and more-ish. Lovely wine.
Red
2017 Domaine Duroché Gevrey-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
90 points
Cherry sherbet nose on pouring. Takes a while to settle down. A bit of VA. Palate has good but not overpowering acidity. Improves with air and a certain pleasant meatiness emerges but this not really my bag.

Flight 7 - Vosne-Romanée (2 notes)

Red
2018 Sylvain Cathiard Vosne-Romanée France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
92 points
Smoky blue fruits. Some pomegranate to. Youthful but brilliant. Palate is youthful and in need of time but not shut down in the way our Volnays were. With air some sweet chestnut and violets appear.
Red
2009 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Vosne-Romanée France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
94 points
Wow. This is might up my strasse. Perfectly balance meatiness, dark fruits, some subtle Vosne spice. Understated yet fabulous. Palate rich long cool fruited and charming. I'm smitten. My wine of the night.

Closing

Some ups and downs but the better wines were absolutely top drawer.
