Introduction

On thursday night, Traci and I drove up to Thomas DeBiase III and Jill Parker's place for his annual Pumpkin Dinner extravaganza. Joining us were Jamie and Kristen Kutch. This is the 3rd annual Pumpkin dinner and it was off the hook good. Notes will be posted in the food forum for the dishes and hopefully Thomas and Jamie will upload some pictures of the dishes...let's just say amazing!!!!

Flight 1 (2 notes)

Starter wine...need something to get settled in after a long drive!

Red
1990 Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Jamie brought this and an 89 Chapoutier La Sizeranne...just to drink before the food hit the table. The Chapoutier was horribly corked unfortunately. The Marcoux, was drinkable but definitely sliding down the backside of the hill. Nose of spice and dark cherry fruit that reminded me of an older burgundy. The palate was tired though with little finish. Nose was quite nice actually as I think back to this wine.
White
2005 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis 1er Cru Montmains France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
90 points
Thomas cracked this to drink while rolling around...super tasty. Crisp, minerals, slight hazelnut, citrus, nice richness and lingering finish. It's a baby but still fun to drink.

Flight 2 (1 note)

White - Sparkling
1985 Charles Heidsieck Champagne Blanc des Millénaires France, Champagne
95 points
This was amazing. Young, fresh, toasty, crisp citrus with nice nuttiness to it. We all loved it and went flying through it.

Flight 3 (1 note)

White
2004 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault Clos de la Barre France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
92 points
This was terrific. I opened this at 9 am and left it open for an hour before putting the cork back in. Consumed about 9 pm or so. Just an amazing young White Burgundy. Silky weighted with minerals, hazelnut, almonds, citrus oil...yummy!

Flight 4 (2 notes)

White - Off-dry
2001 Weingut Reinhold Haart Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
92 points
Take this with a grain of salt..I love young Kabinett level Rieslings. But here we go. of the two Rieslings (muelenhof GKA the other) I thought this was a little crisper (IIRC). Nice minerality, sweet, with spicy green apple and just a hint of petrol. Very good but (and I brought it) I just can't spend this much on Riesling.
White - Off-dry
2001 Meulenhof Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
91 points
This was a little fatter than the Haart and revealed more of a lemon lime characteristic. Sweet, dense very good.

Flight 5 (2 notes)

Red
1999 Giovanni Corino Barolo Vigneto Rocche Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
93 points
This was also slow oxygenated. Terrific, richer style Barolo. Lots of dense cherry fruit, some licorice, and a little earthiness. Young but definitely approachable right now.
Red
1999 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
94 points
This was pretty amazing. As rich and approachable as the Corino...this was powerful and very good but still in need of a lot of cellar time. Brighter cherry fruit, rose petal, tobacco, a little pine resin, lots of acidity and firm tannins...i loved it and if you have it in your cellar you'll be very happy! Thanks!

Flight 6 (1 note)

Red
1985 La Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Bousse d'Or France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
90 points
Jamie contributed this lovely wine. Silky texture with pretty red fruits, leather, earth and a little underbrush. Nice palate weight, good depth of fruit and went perfectly with the dish.

Closing

A terrific evening of great conversation, terrific food (i am not doing it justice) and great wine....
