Introduction

2003 horizontal tasting, plus a 2007 white.

Flight 1 (7 notes)

White
2007 Château La Rame Sauvignon Blanc Sec France, Bordeaux
87 points
Definitely Sauvignon Blanc. Big lemon and grapefruit, steely, dry. Light-medium body. Long. No oak. Pleasant summer dinner wine. $16
Red
2003 Château d'Esteau France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
90 points
Medium dark color. Seductive but restrained earthy graphite nose. Medium body, balanced tannin and acid. Fruit is almost gone (a tiny bit of red cherry), but there's a nice earthy component. I'm not sure this one is going to get any better, though. Pleasant backbone, but good quaffer. Very old world. $20
Red
2003 Clos Junet France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
91 points
Darkish color. Sweet plummy nose with black cherry and sweet strawberries, and a little wet dog and smelly socks. Odd chalky texture - very fine tannins that coat the tongue a little bit like sweetbreads. Restrained acid. Finesse. Long. Some graphite. Light-medium body. Still some fruit left: black cherry and currants. Good age. $27
Red
2003 Château Malmaison Baronne Nadine de Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Moulis en Médoc
91 points
Cloudy dark red color. 80% merlot. Big plummy black cherry nose. Some chalky texture - very fine tannins. Medium body, tannic, medium acid. Huge but rustic. $30
Red
2003 Château Smith Haut Lafitte France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
96 points
Decanted for a few hours. Crazy nose - lambic beer! Some graphite and bacon also. Medium+ body. Smooth. Medium fruit - blueberry. Pepper. Juicy. Very interesting. $72
Red
2003 Château Léoville Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
95 points
[Decanted for many hours] Concentrated dark color. Sweet restrained nose - plummy and strawberry. Black cherry and buttery back on taste. Rich body. Massive! Full of finesse, but subtle. Medium tannins and acid. Very Bordeaux. Still very closed - not ready to drink. $200
White - Sweet/Dessert
2003 Château Les Justices Sauternes France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
92 points
[Served too warm] Almost green tinges on the color. Also on the nose, with honey. Very interesting. Buttery taste. Medium+ sweetness, with an odd finish that knocked this down a few points. Pineapple, light raisin. $53
