Flight 1 (5 notes)

White
2007 Hunter's Sauvignon Blanc New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
grassy and light on it's gooseberry. peppy greenness in the nose. vibrant mineral driven palate, but still goosey, albeit, not over the top in it's NZ expression.
White
2008 Momo Sauvignon Blanc New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
more harmonious than the Hunters and more delicate dispite the guava fruit, gooseberry and a nice thistly green on the nose. palate is more driven by fruit with the gentle hand of minerality and a really refreshing tang to the finish.
White
2008 Seresin Sauvignon Blanc New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
spring water inspiration. Juicy fruit gum aka jack fruit to the nose and it follows through onto the palate as well. and you can't mention Juicy Fruit without mention of a hint of banana. as the price has gone up the green notes have dissipated in this tasting of NZ savvie. not quite M+ acid. this is really really good savvie and quite charming.
White
2006 Chalk Hill Sauvignon Blanc USA, California, Sonoma County, Chalk Hill
more rich and tropical than any of the NZ savvie. sticky pineapple and some banana. the palate shows big fruit, but then nice balance with some barrel treatment that adds wonderful texture to this lush fruit.
White
2005 Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc Te Koko New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
here you get the richness of fruit not present in the other 3 NZ savvies tasted this evening. hot sticky pineapple, but not quite the syrup-y as the chalk hill SB. Barrel not really on the nose here. a little caramelized fruit expression on the palate and the textural notes of oak a la fume blanc. light caramel on the palate.
after 5 hours this starts to rock a green side. asparagus and grass on the nose, but not the palate. still finishes of delicate caramel.

Flight 2 (3 notes)

White
2006 Pegasus Bay Riesling New Zealand, South Island, Canterbury, Waipara
delicate citrus on the nose and some sweet white candy. hints of spice and a dash of RS. great balance. orange zest on the palate. awesome burst of fruit spice on the finish. quince and it almost some spritz. waipara riesling (see also daniel schuster) is just off the chart.
White
2004 Cloudy Bay Riesling New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
beewaxy and linoleum on the nose. faint oxidized fruit. delicate kerosene, wool and mushroom. the whitest lead pencil ever made. lanolin.
after 5 hours...it starts to show quite a lush fruit profile. white candy and hints of chalk buried under fruit. finishes with mellow almondine.
Red
2000 Babich Cabernet Sauvignon The Patriarch New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay, Gimblett Gravels
black blackberry. tar and way sous bois!! deep sweetness of great nebbiolo, but a much wider expression here. lavender floral to the palate. lively medium+ acidity.
this wine is "stepping into the black forest." awesome.

Flight 3 (4 notes)

Red
2006 Peregrine Pinot Noir Mohau New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago
burgundian fresh rubber tyre oak. black cherry fruit. light lime leaf. classy construct.
Red
2006 Pegasus Bay Pinot Noir New Zealand, South Island, Canterbury, Waipara
delicate dark earth on the nose with floral notes showing on the palate. more harmonious oak influence here. lively on the palate with a medium finish that just tingles away.
Red
2006 Escarpment Pinot Noir New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough
a little meaty, but then some damp hay/straw/silage notes in the nose. raspberry fruit and then some raw meat blood, but without the concentration of flavor i've encountered with that blood expression before. let it be noted, that along with blood comes iron.
Red
2007 Felton Road Pinot Noir Central Otago New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago
dark fruit, espresso and hints of cola across the palate with the structure to take this a long way.
after 5 hours, balsa wood off the nose. lots of wood expression and i'm in way to deep. karl (read calgon)...take me away.
do not approach that cornish point for at least 5 more years.
