Napa

Introduction

Enjoyed a variety of wines while visiting in Napa, mostly reds....had several very young Syrah's but very impressed with their presence and balance

Flight 1 - The big boys (9 notes)

Red
2003 Lewis Cellars Syrah USA, California, Napa Valley
95 points
absolute animal of a wine! fabulous fruit, great finish...mega tanins but very quickly came alive in the glass...needs 3 more years before we try again
Red
2002 Alban Vineyards Syrah Reva Alban Estate Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Edna Valley
94 points
This is one terrific bottle of wine, last had it a year ago and it was hot then but has really settled down...classic cote de rhone finish, great fruits and presence. Splash decanted and thoroughly enjoyed
Red
2003 Lewis Cellars Alec's Blend USA, California, Napa Valley
94 points
Very very impressive bottle, received thru Jade for Christmas and couln't resist. Huge wine with fruits that won't stop, great balance and long finish. Will do well with aging, but suprised how approachable this is already.
Red
1997 Hanna Syrah Bismark Ranch USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley
94 points
This is a gigantic wine, hugely extracted with fabulous fruits; 15.9% alcohol is evident, might want to decant this one. Although unfiltered, there was very little sediment. We followed the 97 Cinq Cepages with the Hanna and it overwhelmed the cab blend. This has a good 10 years left and compared very well with the other mega-Syrahs we enjoyed over the holidays
Red
2003 DuMOL Syrah Russian River Valley USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
92 points
Lovely fruits, blackberry and cassis fruit, a real mouthful. Came alive in the glass, but ultimately may not have the complexity of comparable 2003 Syrahs at this price point
Red
2003 Domaine Durand Cornas France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
92 points
Great presence and complexity, will benefit from some bottle time but already a terrific syrah
Red
2003 Buckland Vineyards Syrah USA, California, Sierra Foothills, Fair Play
90 points
The maiden voyage, solid syrah with good development in the glass, nice finish. Complexity not as evident as some of the other syrahs we tasted, but the competition was heavy
Red
2001 Kaesler Shiraz Stonehorse Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
90 points
huge fruit extraction, nice balance and long finish
Red
2003 Novy Family Wines Syrah Sonoma County USA, California, Sonoma County
90 points
Huge fruit presence but very alcoholic, accounts for the mega-extraction but in the short term, definitely decant. Longer term bottle aging will definitely help pull all of this together

Flight 2 - Other reds (6 notes)

Red
1997 Chateau St. Jean Cabernet Sauvignon Cinq Cépages USA, California, Sonoma County
92 points
Hitting its stride, well integrated meritage blend. Did not decant, but was pleased with the balance. Previoius notes felt cab franc was too prominent, but did not have that impression. complex flavors with nice mouthfeel and balance, tannins under control. Had a bit left in the glass at the end of the evening, and it seems to have fallen apart...enjoy what you have in the next year or so
Red
2003 Torii Mor Pinot Noir Oregon USA, Oregon
92 points
Terrific pinot, great color and balance, nice finish, ready to be enjoyed
Red
2003 Bonaccorsi Pinot Noir Fiddlestix Vineyard Sta. Rita Hills USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills
90 points
Great color and fruit flavors, very nice balance and finish; impressive depth and complexity
Red
2004 David Bruce Pinot Noir Central Coast USA, California, Central Coast
85 points
solid, unexciting pinot
Red
1999 Ferrari-Carano Trésor USA, California, Sonoma County
88 points
Doesn't jump out of the glass, some sort of aromatic with strong eucalyptus/cabernet franc presence hard to get past
Red
1998 Turnbull Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
88 points
At its peak, nice round finish, olive/eucalyptus note noticed. don't see this imporving much more

Flight 3 - Bubbly (2 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Roederer Estate Brut Anderson Valley USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley
88 points
solid, very enjoyable, great price
White - Sparkling
1990 Laurent-Perrier Champagne Brut Millésimé France, Champagne
90 points
Toasty and nutty, nice mouse but finish was not prolonged
