Introduction

A small CT xmas meet up with Colonel Lawrence bringing the presents and a few wines from the bar, what a treat !

Flight 1 (6 notes)

White - Sparkling
1999 Bollinger Champagne La Grande Année France, Champagne
Very good indeed, biscuity and yeasty flavours along with focussed acidity and fine bubbles a great way to kick off the evening
Red
1995 Château Mouton Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
95 points
Vivid purple right to the rim, a nose full of dark fruit, cassis with some cigar box and tobacco, i could have kept that glass just to keep smelling the dark and seductive nose for a long time, the only other Chateau Mouton Rothschild i've had was at the Chateau from the barrel, and this was almost as full of fruit, not quite as youthful though but smoother and more integrated, incredible length, still a long way to go with this wine unsurprisingly, simply stunning
Red
1995 Château Latour Grand Vin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
92 points
So much more restrained than the Mouton, even reserved, slightly darker in the glass but with a more noticeable clear rim, the nose had far more cedar and wood, a bit more savoury, firm grip, the tannins weren't as integrated as the Mouton, for 2 wines that are near enough neighbours and were born a day apart (as the colonel told us) the difference was huge and this wine needs a lot more time or a good decant to be more approachable now but the quality was evident
Red
1975 Les Forts de Latour France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Nicely evolved nose, noticeably thinner than the preceding 1st growths, relatively brown colour, tasting of tobacco, some cedar and a little farmyard, tannins fully integrated, on another day it would be quite something but the competition was too much
Red
1982 Château La Pointe France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
93 points
A fully mature pomerol, classic farmyard muck on the nose, quite dark in the glass and browning, very smooth savoury flavour with tobacco, leather and earthiness wonderfully bound together, very seductive and the dark horse of tonights wines standing up well to the Mouton and Latour showing Merlots side of a Grand Vin
Red
2000 Château Léoville Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
93 points
Decanted for a short while, although not really long enough, the nose was full of fruit with some savoury notes showing a glimpse of the future farmyard tones, quite concentrated purple colour almost out to the rim, the dark blackberry fruit muscling into your mouth leaving a twang of tar behind it, very full in the mouth with the tannins competing with the fruit for your attention which indicates its youthfulness, i'm a fan of the Leoville style, other found it a bit of a monster, would happily leave this for another 5 or more years before opening
